We've got the 90s/early 2000s Insert Showoff Thread! (https://www.blowoutforums.com/showthread.php?t=957669&highlight=insert) and it's fantastic.

But it's also narrowly focused on a specific time frame and mainly consists of individual cards.

I want to see completed sets (or sets in progress) of shiny and creative inserts. Who knows, maybe one of these insert sets will become the next PMG or Rubies that everyone will chase? Also, it could be a good way of letting people know which cards you need and you might get some leads.

To add a bit of uniformity to the thread, please size images to 1200 pixels wide. If you have trouble resizing images, just post them anyways and I'll post a resized version you can copy.

(Also, please do not be a squirrel and needlessly quote images.)

ha! UD went hog wild with Vikings. Tarkenton, Culpepper, Carter, and Moss. It's not bad for 1999, excellent mix of past/present/future, but for a 30 card set the Vikings are featured a lot.

My final one for today. It's a small set but each one is numbered /10.

When Marino was my main and only focus, it was the last insert card to have every insert card of his. I think it was 3 years of looking for just that one. Only one was on Burbank without a pic for $200 from 2005 until I found one in 2013. The Burbank one sold around 2009 I want to say.
I toyed with the idea of the set, around 2014. On comc there was a Marcus Allen for $21.25. Wouldn’t accept offers. I just had a feeling I’d regret it if I was to pursue the set.
I started breaking up my Marino collection in 2016, but couldn’t let go of the MVP Gold, so I decided to go for the set after I won a Favre at auction one drunk night. I also bought a Barry Sanders off eBay that day And scooped everything off comc, but the Marcus Allen was gone.
I eventually found everything but Aikman and Marcus Allen. The first Aikman I saw in 2020, and it ended on a best offer very quickly. It was 2 years before another was listed and I made a deal very quickly. It was pricey, but lower price and better condition than the one that just ended for $405.
Over the years, I bought doubles and upgraded my sets condition while making money too. Eventually I met someone who was also only missing Marcus Allen.
When one finally popped up I put a crazy bid in to finish the set. I won it for almost $500,which was almost $800 less than my high bid. My main reasoning of going so hard on it was because, with the gains in 90s inserts, the next time I see one these may have exploded more. The other was with my flips and everything directly involving the set, I owned 18 of the 20 cards for nothing, and what I paid for aikman and allen are what I owned the set for. So even if it was $1600 for those two, I was sitting pretty on the set.
So I guess the Marino was a long hunt for me. But the Aikman proved most elusive. And Marcus Allen took the longest to acquire due to my inability to commit. In stopping and thinking about this though, the Jerry Rice is one that doesn’t show often. I fortunately bought mine off a member on Beckett for $30 in 2017. I don’t recall seeing any at live auction.
Bledsoe and Alstott and Bettis all trip people up on this set as well. Pretty sure Eddie George’s growing popularity will make this a key item over time.

Here's another insert set of sorts. They were mail order items. 1995 Topps Landmark Series of Finest Heavyweights "cards". Made out of 4 oz of bronze. Took me a while to piece together the whole set and I had to work through some database issues with Beckett and TCDB to get the right checklist. I have a ton of related paperwork, ads, brochures, invoices, etc which made this all the more interesting. Anything oddball like that for Topps Finest I jump on whenever I can.

This thread is destined to become one of my all time favorite. I was a major insert set builder back in the day but have sold off the majority of them over the past year. I still have most of the Playoff Quad sets from 1995-2000 (I'll post a couple later), and several auto sets that I will dip into as well.

There are some great things up here already. I never get tired of seeing marinocollector's MVP Gold set. AMAZING!! And jplarson...the Inkredible set...we think alike as I also have that one.

I don't know that I ever set out to build any particular set. If something came my way through lot purchases or pack pulls, I would simply pursue what I had the most of at the time. I would love to say it was my keen eye and laser focus but I have never been great in those departments when it comes to this hobby.

Moving on. My first offering is the 1998 SP Authentic Player's Ink Green and Silver. Other than the Silver Moss, I don't recall ever seeing a Silver auto of Enis, Nash, or Leaf. As for the Golds...out of the question.

Was Ricky a redemption? Seems like the Gold /34 has popped up as much as the base over the years.

I paid $26 for the Gold back in 2012, one sold last year for $180, not bad I guess. Then paid $46 for the base in 2019. A couple seem to have gone for $40 each last year according to Terapeak if those are real sales.

Old school insert question: Why do most 1997 Flair Showcase “Hot Hands” inserts have orange/red flames, but a handful of copies have yellow and white showing in the flames?

I’ve got the complete set and I’ve got all but one grades PSA 10, so I recently picked up a copy of the ungraded one (Terrell Davis) for possible grading and although the listing pic showed the normal orange flames, the card that arrived today has the yellow/white flames.

I’ll post pics if need be.

I hadn't thought about that for the Simms card. As long as he could sign (trace) exactly how he signed it the first time, I would be OK with that. Having a ghost signature in the background would drive me nuts!!

Going old school with this seven card set--1997 Score Board Playbook Mirror Image Autographs. I do have a bit of consternation when it comes to the authenticity of a couple of the autographs--the Favre and the Collins.

I know that back in the day these were some of the original "back door" cards, with many Favre's being faked. The most readily available clue that one of these is fake is the lack of a #/#. Now, if the Favre is indeed fake, it is a very good one. With that said, I also know some of his cards were not numbered yet they had genuine autos on them. I'm not sure why...perhaps they were purchased unsigned and the auto was later obtained at shows or in person, or perhaps they simply slipped through unnumbered, or there were some very serious forgers at the time...probably all of the above.

The Kerry Collins is a different story. If this is a genuine autograph then it is the single worst auto he ever signed. I have only ever seen two of these auto'd and they were both horrible, and both were unnumbered. This is one of the two. I have however, seen several of these cards unsigned. You do the math.

Anyway...I still love the set and consider it to be one the early groundbreaking auto sets of the hobby.

I currently have 8 complete Quad sets from 1995-2000, with another 2 sets missing 2 cards each. This is one one those incomplete sets and is by far my favorite Quad set. I am missing the #2 card which features the Cowboys/Redskins and #10 featuring the Saints/Cardinals.

The Ulitmate Quads are different from the standard quads in that they are serialized to match the total number of head-to-head match-ups the featured teams have had, and rather than standard print they all have a reflective foil (not good for scanning but awesome in person).

Oh, those mid-2000s Classics had some great sets and this set was always a favorite of mine. I'm not the biggest fan of college cards, but this set is far more than a simple collegiate set - it has flair. And Sean Taylor. It's also a lot like the College Materials set from 09 NT. Awesome design and a sweet checklist to match. You've got great taste in cards!

I'm in the same boat as you. It seems like back when these were coming out that there was an announced print run and the number on the back represented the number in that print run, i.e. 34 would have been 34/###. Unfortunately I have no idea where to find the print run. I also know some were obtained via redemption, just not sure which ones. Jerry Rice maybe, since his serial number is in gold while the rest are in black?

Ha, the Kramer has come down quite a bit lately, I think I've seen them in the $15-20 neighborhood. I bought mine way back in around 2005 (as with much of this set) when it was $5. In fact, there were only two cards I paid more than $40 for (Rice and Favre). I got a crazy deal on the Barry Sanders ($25) and I think only around $35 for the Elway and $20 for the Young. Even the Seau and Irvin and formerly "rare" O'Donnell and Boomer were under $20 at the time.

Ricky Williams was the last to arrive. 25 years after I pulled my first one (Steve Largent) the set is complete! Beckett noted (https://www.beckett.com/football/1999/upper-deck-retro-inkredible/) that some cards were available via redemption that expired 8/4/2000.

At the time of release, the 30 card set included 10 rookies, 11 active players, and 9 retired players. 8 of those players were in the HoF with Montana joining them the next year. That list has grown to 13 HoFers thanks to Cris Carter, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, and Terrell Davis. Torry Holt has been a semifinalist every year since retiring and a finalist the last five years.

I had 3 major collecting goals:

1. Complete a Finest Refractor set - done, 1999 Topps Finest Refractors.
2. Complete a large memorabilia set - done, 2000 Playoff Absolute Leather & Laces (https://www.blowoutforums.com/showpost.php?p=18857766&postcount=5).
3. Complete an on-card autograph set - done!

I completed this set last year and understand your pain. The Ricky Williams was the final, and easily most difficult to find, piece to the puzzle.

I'm 2 cards away from being able to add to this. Should have been 1, but one of the cards I ordered turned out to be the wrong type when I had it in hand. Hopefully I'll finish it this year.
