I have seen an increase recently of card descriptions not matching the photo on the listing. I usually avoid these because I don't want to deal with messages "I need to cancel I listed wrong" or something similar. I came across one recently I went ahead and took a chance on. Seller had over 200k active listings and high feedback.
Card was listed as a base Ian Happ Update RC US10 but the photo was a parallel of the base. I went ahead and hit the BIN. If I received a base card I was fine with that. I'm a Cubs fan so I'm cool with spending $7 total for a base Happ Update RC. Well it delivered today and I actually received the parallel that was pictured in the listing and not a base as the title stated.

2017 Update Ian Happ US10 Camo 10/25 for $7. Not a bad pickup.

Anyone else have any good pickups recently due to bad listing?

I get pickups due to poorly titled eBay listings. For example, misspelling the player's name.

Sometimes it helps to cast a wide net with your search - Antony Rizzo may have a few cards that don't show up for Anthony Rizzo.

Fun topic. Mine was a Betts update chrome RC

The other side of this coin can be very frustrating too thought, the seller doesn't know what they have and way over values something. I recently saw someone selling sealed cards (boxes) on FB for hundreds of dollars when a very quick search on eBay showed that the same box could be bought for under $50.

I watched this go through a few eBay listing cycles with no bids, and the seller dropped the price each time...I grabbed it last month when the BIN was down to $10. Total w/ shipping was around $16 and it's one of those cards that annoyed me for never having grabbed one.

It's the silver signature/white front letters variation, and it usually goes for quite a bit more. I'm sure the seller didn't realize it because of the grading company's mislabeled flip.

(I saw another one (ungraded) with a bad listing title end for around $10-15 as well since I received this one).

This was listed BIN at a ridiculous price for a base card graded 8.5. But its a variation, mislabeled, so it was a very nice price. I got a corrected label from PSA along with a 1/2 grade bump :)! (crack out, not a crossover)

It goes both ways, I got an 87 Topps bonds that was labeled Tiffany, that was just a regular base bonds. It was only like 10 bucks so I didn’t really care. I did inform the seller tho.

Back when 2019 and Update came out I was chasing Eloy a lot. Saw a listing of a lot including 9 or so of the base rookie debuts as well as a few other Eloys. I noticed one had the vintage logo. Hit the BIN fast.

Upper Deck made a Young Guns card of Seattle Kraken mascot "BUOY".
The font was such that if you don't know his name, you'd think it was "BUDY".
TONS of listings with BUDY. Scored some of the rare French versions and CLEAR versions for cheap.

I remember years back I bought a 1994 Collector's Choice Gold Marshall Faulk RC for a couple of bucks because the seller on COMC had it listed as a Silver. A bunch of members here gave me quite a bit of grief for that, like I was supposed to find a way to contact the seller (which you can't do on COMC) to let them know of their mistake.

Nope. That's on them for not knowing what they had. I still have that beauty in my collection.

I fully agree. If you are going to list something for sale it is your job to do the research and know what you are selling. The same resources are out there for the seller that are there for the buyer.

I picked up a purple chrome refractor of Paul Goldschmidt ($100 trade in value) for 9.99 a few weeks before that mvp thing ended. It wasn't a new listing either, it was sitting there.. They spelled it Goldschmodt or something like that.

Bought a 1986 Topps traded Tiffany Will Clark and Andres Galarraga from a seller who had them listed as base versions. I saw a little sheen in the photos so I took a chance on them for $2.00 each with free shipping. Both were delivered and both were in fact the Tiffany versions. eBay seller had like 5,000 feedback so it was a definite gamble but paid off in the end.

Thats not how it works.

COMC identifies and labels all cards. As a seller you need to catch their errors and let them know if they make a mistake.

Good point about the flip side. As a collector of errors, I run into this quite often. People think just because something is unique or nearly unique like a printing error, it’s automatically worth like $20,000.

Yea sellers card, sellers price yada yada, but all it does is basically take the card off the market due to seller lack of knowledge of market value- no one is paying 20k for a random misprint error. It’s a shame because for some I would pay up a good deal for, well over what one would go for at auction…but not in the same stratosphere as 20k.

As for the thread topic, I’m in general agreement that it’s sellers job to know what they have…that takes knowledge and effort, things that have value. They are putting up a card for sale, and making that sale for the price they dictated, so in theory it’s not a bad thing.

Now there’s a difference between an item bought on eBay for $25 that’s worth $200, and an old person selling Action Comics #1 for a quarter at a yard sale (which is stuff of myth nowadays, it just won’t happen). I think most people would agree that doesn’t seem right. Where the dividing line is though…I don’t really know.
