View Full Version : Investment you're hoping to take off 23/24

Just curious for those collectors who put out an investment into a particular player, that hasn't quite panned out how you expected, who are you rooting for to have a decent 23/24 so your investment pays.

Mine is Grant Riller. Was a massive fan of is out of Charleston...then he came to my favorite team (Hornets) but was plagued with injuries both in CHA and Philly...but he came back to the Texas G-League team and actually balled out pretty well. I have a box of about 300 cards. Mainly prizm rainbows (almost complete) and various set autos. I think if somehow he makes it to a team and gets one reasonable game in where people take notice, I'll finally be able to cashout and not lose my ass.

I'm not sure I'm buying anything with the expectation of making a profit in the next year, unless it's just a under market sales that I can flip immediately.

Longer term, there is still some stuff that I'm trying to get my hands on while it dries up.

Bought some Coby White RC’s near end of season. He looks like he’s putting it together, and had his confidence back like his Freshmen year at UNC and his rookie season with Bulls.

Bulls have to resign him but I think that is expected. I also expect him to start at PG next year, especially with Lonzo’s career looking to be over.

Already chatter from the major news outlets that Bulls are shopping Lavine, Coby could be in for an elevated role if Bulls move other players as well.

I bought Coby high too but I did sell early. I thought he would be a stud, but his first little bit, really had me nervous and I chose to get out while I could and not lose my ass on him. I am rooting for him though for sure!

Ha what a crock! If you wanted a good and safe investment you should have put money in Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, Netflix, Nvidia stock at the end of 2022. You would have made more profit already than basically anything in this crap shoot. Hell of a lot better chance your investments continue to go down here than increase by a single penny.

But to be fair, you yourself openly admitted to all of the missed opportunities you had leading up to and throughout the Covid boom and then from there you warped into some kind of FOTL antagonist who spent more time complaining than actually trying to figure out a lane that worked for you. And I suspect that you didn't invest in those stocks at the end of 2022 either. Don't let hindsight kill you but at the same time I don't blame you for moving on from card investing.

There are ways to make things work in a down market. My business is 1/4 the size it was two years ago and this is far from full time for me so the ebbs and flows aren't going to put me on the streets, but I like to stay involved and make moves when they make sense. About a month ago I bought a binder of 800 cards for $250. It is all rookies, inserts, parallels, refractors, etc. I'd guess it's a $1500 collection. Good example of a low risk investment. I don't need to rush to sell it. I can list a few cards at a time, do okay in the end, and not have to sweat about it. Maybe get lucky if one of the rookies goes off and I can add more to the bottom line. Those sound like the type of deals that may make sense for you if you haven't totally given up.

It can be both....

I get it. OP is coming in here sounding like he still wants to find the get rich quick opportunity.... and those days seem to be gone for now.

But a number of people I know, including myself, are buying cards they want to collect while also being sure to buy stuff that they think will appreciate in price in the future. This isn't 2020 when anything you buy has the opportunity to 3-4x in a few months, but opportunities are out there if you're good and lucky. Instead of bashing OP, I'd rather lightly jab at him, and maybe discuss a few tips that have helped me in my 30 years of collecting:

-Don't just buy what people are trying to sell you because they have that card to sell. The biggest mistake I see is that people are falling for influencers and hobby hype men that are just propping up the stuff that have to unload
-Buy stuff you'll get some enjoyment out of, even if they guys tanks
-Don't get in too deep on unproven long term prospects
-Deciding when to sell is just as tough as deciding when to buy. There's a guy out there who bought the Mahomes National Treasures RPA Shield 1/1 for $7,000 once. He sold it for $14,000 and literally left millions on the table. ON the other hand there are countless others who had their peak and ended up worthless (Bol Bol, Baker Mayfield, etc)

That's just a few. I'm sure more people around here have good wisdom that has worked for them.

I suppose there could be a market for a regular guy who influences by example rather than the bells and whistles and "selling out" that happens so often on YouTube. Or it could be incredibly boring lol.

Time is always an issue. I work full time on top of cards, and recently inherited 5 rental properties so now I'm trying to learn how to be a landlord. There's just always something going on and if I started a channel I would want to take it seriously. For now I post here when I can and maybe that helps some folks so that's good enough for me.

If you don't know how to make money on sports cards, don't be bitter at those who do. The stock market has been a bad investment the last few years. Cherry picking a few good stocks after the fact to hype doesn't change the fact that sports cards have consistently outperformed the stock market over the last 40 years.

Selfishly, Cade Cunningham as a piston fan, and as long as he's on the court, i'm sure he'll be good.

I have figured the best lane for me. I'm not making huge money but it's enough to earn a living. I doubt there are many people that aren't part of the money tree, have some type of connection, breaker, bot, or running some type of scam or card doctoring that can do much better right now. If you're trying to make a living in the hobby right now without doing one of those things there is a 99% chance you're wasting your time. Not everyone is going to have 25+ years experience, do tons of research, and spend tens of thousands of dollars if the right situation comes up.

Not that it matters but I invested in a few of those stocks at or close to their 52 week lows. Apple, Meta, Google, and my #1 pick was DraftKings. Unfortunately, I sold DraftKings and Meta when I doubled my money. Made a higher percentage on DraftKings in weeks than Im sure buying any FOTL even at the floor price will bring you back all year. Unfortunately, I was only able to put in around $60k. For two big reasons. Had stocks I didn't want to sell and take a loss on. I had a bunch in Classics Football that came out near the end of the year and way more in a bunch of junk products like 21-22 Panini Black Basketball. I should of just took what I could get right away and put it all into the great safe stocks with good upside. I wasted a ton of dead time to basically break even on Disney stock but just recently bought some again. I bought it at $88 pretty close to its 52 week and 9 year low.

It's what is worth your time and what is not. For me to take pictures, list, answer questions and ship out 800 cards to at best make $1250 I'd go insane. I won't come remotely close to 800 transactions for the whole year. Im sure your business is different but I think the time and effort it would take me to sell all that I wouldn't even make minimum wage. I don't know any jobs right now that still only pay minimum wage in my state.

The main reasons you can't invest in most cards and boxes now is because of the price manipulators. If box prices were set by the market at release and not a couple hundred bums getting 98% of the print run at a fraction of market value things would be different. Buying single cards without being a dealer what percentage over the last 6 months has gone up? 1-2%? Is it even that much? Technically you COULD make money. Just like you COULD win an even money bet that the actual odds are 50-1. Even if you win it's still a stupid bet. That or you have to do what you said you're doing. Buy tons of cheap cards and hope to make a small amount. Unfortunately, factoring in the time to do that you're looking at making less money than doing any other job out there.

People should just buy what they want to and can afford to collect right now. if it happens to go up it goes up. If it doesn't it's part of your collection.

Yeah cherry picking the best companies at near their 52 week lows. I actually liked DraftKings more than all those but that would be deemed cherry picking because it's a low market cap stock. The other ones are all the biggest companies in the world with huge market caps. They were great long term safe investments with upside.

Yep and this is what I mean by what rats60 said. Prime example that there are so many people out there that are just flat out dumb. I'm far from a rocket scientist but I can't imagine what goes through some of these people's heads. I worked at a casino for 10+ years. I've dealt with more stupid people the last 3 years with sports cards and boxes that are dumber than a box of rocks than I did working 10 years full time at a casino. What does that tell you about this "hobby"? Seeing breaks fill up day after day with the worst odds of any gambling on earth should tell you all you need to know about this industry.

You’ve posted previously about your David Robinson collecting, your location is Texas and keldon was the only player on the 2020 team that fit those connections and had any semblance of development left in his career

I actually like Keldon as a player, like a 3rd option on a good team. Although I do agree with an above poster that he’s more basketball good than hobby good.

He had a pretty big performance bump a couple years ago. It’s usually rare a player does that twice in the hobby

i think he's the best player on the Spurs team. and with Wemby showing up, and hopefully a true PG, i think Keldon is going to take another step up in his development.

but i do think you are also right, he's "basketball good, but not hobby good".

I figured it out right away as well.

Between the Gold Medal comments and Kahwi comp it made it pretty apparent.

yeah i think the Gold Medal one was a dead giveaway.

i just think that Keldon fits so much into the mold of PG13 with Indiana, and Kawhi as he was developing into a superstar. he's nowhere near as good as they were, but he also is lacking the support around him.

the Spurs have the #1, so that's Wemby, and hopefully they'll add a true PG. i really wish we would go all Houston Texans and trade for the #2 (without giving up Keldon or Devin Vassell) and add Scott Henderson too, that would be insane.

I'm not going to bash your choice here... because if it was obvious, then everyone else would be doing it. On top of that, it's a guy who has produced in the NBA, it's just a matter of if he can keep improving or not.

My question for him is if he can become a good shooter on higher volume. Him shooting 40% from 3 in 21-22 looked great, but then dropping to 33% in 22-23 is concerning. Also, can he develop into a better distributor if he can't be an A-level scorer. I don't know... but it's probably a lot better than dumping a ton of money into hyped guys who haven't proven much.

Rui Hachimura possibly. Being on the Lakers and having a full off-season with Phil Handy could add to what seemed like much improved play at the end of the year. Being the first top 10 out of Japan could help add value if he does catch fire.

very true!

i'm hating the trade rumors that are starting to swirl about him. i think Keldon is a very valuable player for the SA, he's too good to trade. we've got a very young and solid core of kiddos on the team right now.

i think having a true point guard is not only going to help the team, but help develop Keldon a little better too. we'll see. for now, my Keldon collections grows

There's investing and there's gambling.

This "hobby" is 90 percent gambling, and gambling in an absurdly roundabout way clouded by rumor, hunches, and manipulation and with no underlying logic or mathematical odds.

You don't "invest" in something for a year, because you aren't invested in it at all, you are speculating on a short-term gamble because you want the rush of being right. The money doesn't even matter that much

Just curious for those collectors who put out an investment into a particular player, that hasn't quite panned out how you expected, who are you rooting for to have a decent 23/24 so your investment pays.

LeBron James :D

A lot of Cavs fans look at Keldon as the one who got away.

The way he'd fit right in with the young core of Garland, Mobley, and Allen could have been very good. And then Mitchell too once we got him.

But we took Dylan Windler instead:doh:

I bought Coby high too but I did sell early. I thought he would be a stud, but his first little bit, really had me nervous and I chose to get out while I could and not lose my ass on him. I am rooting for him though for sure!

I actually sold high near end of pandemic on all my Coby. 3 Kabooms, tons of low numbered SSP stuff.

Bought back in at prices that I think there is room for even slight growth if he does what I think he will do next year.

Getting a Galactic RC PSA 10 for $60 to me was probably the best value I got for any of his stuff. Got his downtown rookie for 180. I thought that was also fair and cheap enough for it to grow a bit too. The one I overpaid for was a Coby Mosaic Peacock rookie for $150….and still I don’t feel bad about it. We’ll see!

I second Garland. Not sure if he will ever be hobby good but he's gonna keep leveling up and will take a Deaaron Fox style leap at some point in the near future.

My favorite under the radar guy is Devin Vassell. Between injuries, not being ready to contribute from Day 1 and being a Spur, a lot of people don't know how good he is and he has more room to grow IMO (I think he will make at least 1 AS game during his career).

My biggest investment currently is JJJ and I'm still holding since he's one of my favorite players so I'll wait for him to hit the stratosphere before I start moving some rookie autos that I am not PCing. Or I'll just end up never selling and will keep onto the whole stash lol.

Not sure what you mean by stratosphere but JJJ has peaked. There’s nothing left to develop with his game and definitely nothing that’s going to make him hobby relevant

I invested in Patrick Williams. I think the talent and skills are there, but are not on full display because he's playing behind too many scorers on Chicago. It's a very similar situation to the Mikal Bridges with the Suns, where you don't know the full potential until he becomes the 1st or 2nd option on his team.

This hits home for me. I believe in him still, HES SO YOUNG! He’s been stuck on a team of high volume shooting star veterans. Makes it tough to grow your game under these conditions. I think he’s starting to turn a corner and expect him to be a bigger part of the Bulls gamelan moving forward. He has to be greedy and demand the ball and be a dog.

Coby and Pat are two guys I could see having heightened roles this season. Of course PWill could benefit from a change of scenery to a bad or young team with more opportunity but I think he can blossom eventually with Bulls regardless.

never realized how much promise Cleveland has with that group. that's awesome.

yeah i'm glad we got Keldon, really like him a lot. he's the face, was the face, but he's the one that really got them going. they've got a 1-2 punch with him and Devin Vassell there.

we'll see how it goes with Wemby now in the lineup.
