View Full Version : 2023 Update Rookies? Which rookie carries the product?

Assuming we can still use the 2022 logic with Topps Now 'Rookie' vs 'Call Up' designations, which rookies would even be in Update this year?
Seems like a very weak crop of Rookies left assuming Elly, Henry Davis, etc. get held out for 2024 Series 1.
Luckily for Fanatics, people will buy regardless but I can't see this release holding any value after release.

Thats a start. Now drop the ones already in S1 or S2. I don't see anyone to chase in Update.
Elly would have sold a lot of Update.

Yeah and it will impact TCU as well. But that was a crap product last year so par for the course.

I don’t. It’s just another throw-away RC Logo card which has less appeal/value than a true RC, IMO

That RC list is atrocious. Throw in the price tag, print run and lack of quality control...this is one of the easiest passes of the last few years.

I love him, he as as high of a ceiling as literally any pitcher, but Eury is about to be throttled down because he's never been above 77 IP. That'll probably provide a bit of a dip for Update.
Edit: had it wrong in my head. 78 IP is his max.

People can find this post in just about every Topps Update thread ever (2020 might be the worst product ever created so I'll give you that one) - What makes Update such an easy hold product has been the depth of checklists.
2019 Topps Update has one of only two rookies of Luis Arraez, one of the biggest storylines of the 2023 season.
That rookie list seems weak now but there will be more. Eury Perez could be the 2038 Clayton Kershaw/Max Scherzer - Lock for hall of fame.
These sweeping statements are never wrong. ;)

Gabriel Moreno might have another RC but in a D-Backs jersey, post-trade (similar to Arozarena in 2020- Cardinals/Rays).

Yeah, last year Topps didn't have Adley in Update despite the fact that he debuted in late May. I think when I looked through the product / checklist, the "updates" stopped around that time (as in, if something happened on June 1st or later, it didn't reflect in the checklist).
So basically you need to find someone who debuted before June 1st and didn't appear in Series 2 (which excludes Jordan Walker / Kodai Senga / Corbin Carroll / Yoshida / Volpe etc.)
All that to say, congrats to fans of guys like Zach Neto, Eury Perez, Matt McLain and Ryan Noda! Your favorite stars are going to be carrying an entire set this fall!

2024 Series 1 should be the one to get with Elly, Strand, Frelick, Henry Davis, Julien, Gelof & Soderstrom. Probably more because they may add some of the August call ups to Series 1 as well. Still have a lot of August to go.

They will hold players for series 2. Corbin Carroll debuted mid august last year and was held for series 2.

They really missed the ball not having Elly in Update. I can definitely see his stock being a good bit cooler by the time 2024 S1 drops than he would have been in Update. He's fortunate S1 drops before the season starts, but dude does have a 101 OPS+. It's not like he's just destroying the league.

Obviously ‘24 Series 1 will sell just fine with or without Elly, but guess what, so will ‘23 Update. The benefit of having him in the 2024 releases has nothing to do with Flagship, it has everything to do with all the other 2024 releases that Elly will be in now. The boost that Elly would have given to ‘23 Update is peanuts compared to the combined boost Elly will give to all the mid tier and low end 2024 releases.

Did I miss Gavin Williams in that list? I think he’s make the cut if I remembered correctly. Certainly not sexy but there look to be a few potential next gen pitching studs in that list.

'Early June' is the usual cutoff. It was earlier than that last year. Looks to be May 24-June 1 this year.

Julien and Neto are decentish and there are some hyped young pitchers. I think the secondary rookies of the Series 1 and 2 guys can carry a lot of weight IF they nail the pictures. Some of them have pretty boring images and collectors will chase cool-looking cards.

He wasn’t a prospect darling coming up, and he started his career “too late” for most investors here.

I can see this being like 2021 where prices are cheap.

There could be no one to carry this Years Set. I think there’s a general Hobby expectation for there to be Winners more often than not with the Update Product. If you go back 10 or even 15 Years, you’ll see that’s just not the case.

Aftermarket? Sure. Either way, Topps doesn’t care as much about that as they care about their entire 2024 product line.

More love? His BC Auto is $150. He’s pretty expensive. Far too expensive for a Red with 3.2 career WAR who will be 25 next season

lotsa decent maybes but certainly no names the masses are frothing at the mouth for like Julio last year
I like in order-ish
Perez
Jones
Neto
Julien
McClain
Grayson
Bradley
Bibee
then youve got a bucket of guys like Rocchio, Miller, Stone, Allen and a few others with mild upside

I hate that a pitcher is #1 on the list, but I agree it's Perez...by a not-so-close margin. I'd go Neto at #2 since I, and seemingly I alone, think he's got real upside.
