Cross-posted this in baseball too. The majority of the article is centered around Basketball, so I am posting it here too.

This article was recently posted on ESPN.com's front page.

There sure are some 'interesting' things mentioned.

Discuss.

I think it's a decently written article that helps explain the breaking business to novices.

Chad Redfern seems like a decent guy - probably the only breaker I would buy from - so I'm glad he got a mention.

I'm less interested in Layton's personal life, but I guess that's how the writer tries to make the article more humanizing for casual readers.

"The controversial rise and uncertain future of box breaks"

Quite the vote of confidence from ESPN. Wonder if they're at war with fanatics?

I wouldn't say there is as much controversy as they are making it out to be. If you don't like them, don't participate. I don't. Many other ways to enjoy cards than have somebody open packs for you, which I have never understood.

I thought it was a very solid writeup. Maybe the author could have mentioned that the card companies started offering NPNs ~25 years ago to address concerns that cards = gambling.

I have never participated in a box break, and surely never will. But obviously box breaking is a big part of hobby growth, which is great. And I can see where it would be really exciting for participants. I thought the article was well done.
