The future of the hobby - may be exciting or grim for people who like to open boxes. What do you anticipate will be the extent of your participation?

more or less zero. Maybe once a year or less.

I did three Dynasty this year. It was okay. Can’t say I enjoyed it too much. I did also did 1 break in 2022. So maybe 1-2 breaks a year, but that number seems high. It’s not something that interests me, but the right product at the right price is something I’ll always seriously consider.

Lets not call it the future of the hobby. Many people already collect in a way that has no dependency on the business of breaking.

If your participation in the hobby is propped up by the ability to open boxes, well, that sucks.

How about a hot blonde with big knockers? Once a day? Once a week? Once a month?

I would rather yolo my money on stock options then buy into a break.

The poll is addressing the future of the hobby for people who like to open new wax, specifically.

I’d do GoT breaks again if the prices were reasonable. Will never do a Fanatics break.

I would be in an other category. Pre-pandemic and pre-Judge taking off, I used to buy into Yankees team breaks for the releases I never bought a complete set (3 a year) or my own boxes (3 a year) so I could get at a minimum all of the Yankees base cards and some of the parallels with a shot at a relic or autograph. Now, most of those breaks are way too expensive, so I just purchase singles off COMC or E-bay.

Why would I pay more to open a product with a breaker? It makes no sense. It's not like they're providing the service for free. The upcharge is absurd in some cases. Only people who are bad at math or valuation get into breaks.

People will say it's a cheaper entry point but I would argue it isn't. Over the long haul you're better off saving up and buying your own box. Much cheaper and you're guaranteed to get something. I can't imagine buying into a case break of Flawless basketball for $1000/team and not hitting a single card. Or worse yet, hitting a card and it's only worth $100, which most are or less.

Breakers add no additional value to the product they sell, only additional cost

I don't like to watch men play around with my chicka.

I also don't want to watch men open my boxes.

Not the best analogy but hey, spice things up in here.

edit: dang, beat to the punch

Never do breaks..it's not my thing. Some people say it's more affordable but is it really? Maybe if your team doesn't really have big hits it's worth it but I assume the better teams are way pricier and if you strike out you spent big bucks for nothing. Maybe I'm oversimplifying it but I guess to me for the most part it doesn's seem worth it (except for collectors of cheaper teams)

This is the way I see it also, breaking your own box is hard enough to get something worthwhile now spread those odds out amongst 20 or more people from one box and it becomes almost impossible.

I won't do them. I don't want to contribute to the ever inflating wax prices. I do realize that horse as left the barn already. I can only do my part and vote with my wallet.

If more people actually did this, it would make a difference. See other industries and those companies stock prices currently. Not enough people in the hobby with the nuts to slow down their addiction.

This. If we ever hope to have box prices come back down to earth we have to stop buying into breaks. Unfortunately people are truly addicted :(

I do maybe two or three a year if there is a product I like and a team that I feel is undervalued.

Breaks have never been interesting to me. The infusion of influencer/live culture makes it downright unappealing.

Staying away from breaks has been great for me personally. Same with whatnot, I'll watch streams here and there just to see if anything interesting is happening, but lately its all junk and base cards in a one touch for $20.

Yep I used to watch Ifsportscards top ten pulls of the week but the screamers and influencers ruined it. I could never get that excited pulling a money card for someone else.

Sometimes the answer is easy. As you say, not enough people think it through or care about it. One of the "positives" I hear about breaking is that it will get all the singles out on the market so us singles buyers should be thankful. No, it just means they probably get dumped quicker if anything. Boxes will still get broken over time when they are forced to go on discount if breakers aren't scooping them all up. Plenty of every day people would buy the boxes and sell themselves.

That world is dying though. Fanatics is going to work hard to consolidate the entire card life cycle. Makes a lot of sense for a lot of people.

Batting practice at big league stadiums is ad after ad on the big-screens about sports books and how to bet during the game :)!

It will not take long for kids to ask about the spread before games.

I was thinking of getting into breaks. My requirements are guys wearing midriff shirts or no shirts at all when they open packs. I also want the chance of the breakers stealing a big card from me if I win one. Screaming "Let's GO!" is also appreciated. Does anyone know where I can find a breaker like this?

Wax is already incredibly overpriced, so let's sell fractionalized shares of it and pump the price up even more!

For 2023 Bowman, I was chasing 2 guys, so I did player breaks a week for the 2 guy ($50, a week). When eBay auction prices go down, I didn't do anymore breaks. I likely won't be doing anymore future Bowman breaks, most of the cards I get were at best were 9s from breakers. I get better conditioned cards on eBay.

So you would like to sort all cards into teams or players, and put all cards in sleeves and top loaders and then pack and ship them all for the same price as just selling the box?

Not paying someone else a markup to open my packs. Never understood it, never will.

I never imagined that this poll would be so one-sided. I honestly thought there would be a better mix here with a whole lot more people getting in breaks regularly.

Maybe the people who get in to breaks are on their own forum/chat board???

I think a ton of them don't actually care about the cards. Its a cash grab, drug injection. So what's there to chat about? Why the need for a forum?

It’s a forward asking poll - so if you don’t anticipate getting in one again, mark that.

If fanatics intrigues you, mark what you think you might do.

I guess most of the social interaction in the breaks are comments made during the live stream. The espn article suggests that the comraderie aspect of the breaks is what helps keep people coming back, haha.

My guess, and a total guess since I am not plugged into this culture, is that they would all be on a discord or twitch channel not a traditional message board like this one. That stuff will play right into Fanatics' strategy.

I see it as breakers just trying to reel the punter in for another spin on the breaking wheel.

Breaking has always kinda reminded me of the online dating thing. I tried it once, and quickly realized it wasn't for me. I am told however, that loads of people prefer it. I don't actually know any of those people, but I'm sure they're out there.

Not interested in breaks anymore, or really new wax at all for that matter. Participated in a few here and there when I was getting back in to collecting but haven't joined one since 2020 I believe. Singles life for me now, and I love it :D (as does my wallet and desk space)
