Recently we bought a nice basketball collection and found a Dirk Nowitzki rookie Skybox Star Rubies numbered to 25 in it. The card is ungraded and looks nice, one little nicked corner. I plan on taking it to the National and getting it graded. My question- which grading company for a big card like this is best and why?

The last sale is from 2019 in a Beckett slab for around 8K-130 point shows it sold on PWCC auction in June of 2019.

I think with Dirk going into the Hall this year and the rarity of the card, I need to use an auction house as well, so which one is best for a big card? Thanks for the opinions.

That's one hell of a find! What were the other top cards in the collection, if you don't mind sharing?

Jeez, that huge. Message Goldin Auctions, tell your story and if they are at the National, leave it with them. Congrats on the new car. maybe used, who knows! Haha

We knew going into the purchase that there was lots of Lebron rookies, Kobe rookies and nice inserts, and a ton of Jordan big cards. Most of the collection was basketball sets. The guy was a set collector, but did have a few nice star cards. We didn't know about this one until we started digging through everything. My partner didn't think it was that big, since the only thing he looked at for pricing was an old Beckett from about 6 years ago. I then did a little research to show him how potentially big it is.

Should be a fun journey to grade it, and sell it.

Terapeak shows a BGS 9 that sold for 35k in 2021. The market has maybe dropped a bit since then but it should still be a 10K+ card.

I would normally say PSA, but with a bad corner, it will likely grade a little better with BGS, assuming the centering is good.

No idea on auction house. I would say Goldin is good for big cards, and while this card would be considered big by most of us, in terms of cards Goldin regularly sells, a $10-15k card is going to get lost in the shuffle of cards in their auctions and probably will not get advertised properly.

FWIW, this card will sell really high even if it grades a PSA 4 or 5.

Barring any major surface issues like a crease or paper loss, the downgrade from PSA 8 to 5 won't be as significant as it would be for other cards. It's too rare and the eye appeal is still there on lower graded copies.

Amazing find, must have been super exciting when you found it. Looking forward to what it brings at auction!

Thanks for all the opinions and information. We have some decisions to make and if I figure out how to post a picture of the card, I'll do that.

This reminds me of that guy who bought a Dirk lot which included a Nowitzki Showcase 1/1 rookie.

Nice find.

Hopefully for the seller's sake, the use of a 6 year old price guide wasn't used to value the rest of the collection for the purchase.

We have decided to use Goldin Auctions for the sale of the card. We have an agreement in place with them for the card to be included in their Premier Auction after The National.

Thanks for all the interest and especially the help on the how to proceed with such a rare card.

We're going to enjoy watching the process of how a big dollar card goes through the auction process at Goldin. So far, they have been great to deal with and having their Netflix series showed me a few things about how they handle the process with regular guys like me.

I'll let everyone know when it goes up for auction, especially those who may want to purchase it.

Will it be graded before going up for auction?

It will- Goldin only sells graded cards. They have an agreement with PSA to grade all cards submitted to them in raw condition.
We're hoping for a good grade to enhance value, but no matter what we will be happy to sell using Goldin. They have been extremely nice and have explained the process well.

Make the drive to the National & sell it yourself. Why give money to goldin

No dealer at the national is going to fork over what this card is worth. Or what two Nowitzki collectors might bid.

I generally think submitting to auction houses is dumb, but this card is an exception.

Doesn't have to be a dealer. I'm sure there will be plenty of big Dirk collectors there

Thanks again for all the opinions.
We thought this through and considered many of the options stated here.
Ultimately we felt that going with an auction house provided more benefits than did selling on our own. The fees are less than eBay, they will promote the card, and their bidders include many international bidders- a big benefit since Dirk is from Germany. Hopefully a few bidders will feel the need to compete for this unique card.
A side note- PSA workers must read this post as two account reps contacted me about grading the card. They were happy to hear we decided to use Goldin as they use PSA to grade all cards before they appear in their auctions.

The Dirk was graded at The National by PSA. It graded a PSA 7. Here's the link to their Instagram post- https://www.instagram.com/p/CvSpyuHpynA/?img_index=1
The card is going to be auctioned off in Goldin's Elite auction from August 10-30th.
Thanks for all the information provided. I took it to heart and used it.

Hi, I would prefer to sell this card via PWCC. They had a lot of great Nowitzki RC in the last months (e.g. Only PSA 10 SPX spectrum).

And good to know. This Ruby is the rarest parallel card from his rookie year. I think that max 10 pieces only still exist. I have a BGS 8 Skybox ruby card from Dirk.

Another great example of his rookie parallels is Fleer Brilliant. 24 karat/24

Good luck with the sale! I have a star rubies in the same auction coming up.

The card is currently up for auction on Goldin in their elite auction. Bidding started on August 10th and ends August 30th.

There was a PSA 6 version of the card sold this past weekend on PWCC that sold for $28,200. The bidding really ramped up during extended bidding time.

We're excited about the auction and look forward to an interesting evening watching the auction on August 30th.

The card sold on Goldin in their elite auction. I know some say selling on an auction house is not the way to sell, but in this case, everything went well beyond our expectations. Carlo at Goldin was great to work with- a true gentleman. Here's the link to the sale. https://goldin.co/item/1998-99-skybox-premium-star-rubies-255-dirk-nowitzki-rookie-card-06-25vqowh

Congrats on the sale of a beautiful card! No matter how people feel about Ken and his auction house, he's essentially built a brand and site that has a high end deep pocketed customer base. All you needed was two bidders that wanted a rookie card of an ATG where only 25 exist. Congratulations on the sale!

We figured more of a collectors choice was PSA and knew Goldin preferred PSA.
Thanks for the compliment.
