2023 Summer League thread

Surprised nobody has made one of these yet, well I haven't checked but I don't see one on the first page so I assume so.

I guess that's truly an indictment on how poor the card market is right now. Despite the hypebois still saying how great everything is, best month ever... blah blah blah

Anyways, cards aside lets talk about Summer League.

Recap of day 1 some notables:

**Jalen Williams is way too good for the Summer League. Dude is a legit pro, no need to be playing.

**Chet was a little rusty but looks really solid. He's going to have a huge impact day 1 as long as he's healthy. The Thunder are looking really really good.

**Jovic is playing like he wants to be in the Miami rotation and I think he's gonna be able to crack it this season. He's a really interesting piece nobody is talking about. Interesting combo of shooting, shot creation, and playmaking makes him and interesting matchup headache.

Millers first impression was really bad. He saved his box score late in the game when probably nobody cared.

I think his first half he had 6 fouls and 5 points.

He looks way undersized to me for some reason. His main contribution is going to be his 3 point shooting, I think.

Hornets really blew it passing on Scoot for this guy.

I think we automatically expect guys like Miller to be physical, positionless beasts but he's 100% just a 3 like Brandon Ingram with average/decent NBA athleticism.

For the record, I like Brandon and think he'll be a solid player. And I'm not sure if Scoot will be a superstar (but I hope he does).

Friday night has some good match-ups on ESPN:
Kris Murray & Scoot Henderson vs Amen Thompson & Cam Whitmore at 6pm. Then at 8 pm you have Victor Wembanyama (I thought I heard he is making his debut then) vs Brandon Miller.
The top 4 picks in the draft plus Whitmore who was projected as high as #5, but slipped to #20 & of course my Iowa guy!

Some day 2 thoughts:

Keyonte George has a little bit of pop to his game. Looks decent with the handle, made a couple nice passes and had a really awesome chase down block.

Ochai Agbaji is a guy, when the Cavs drafted him, I thought he was nothing more than a stationary shooter who might provide a little on ball perimeter defense. It looks like he’s got a little bit more in terms of dribble drives and pull-ups. He intrigued me at the end of last season when he was getting run and we’ll see how he carries it forward

Chet had a pretty lackluster game. The handle needs a lot of work. Gonna be a defensive monster though and he’ll get plenty of good looks this year. Mobley/Chet/Wemby dominate DPOY for the next 10 years

Keegan Murray is also way too good to be here, it’s unfair. Don’t need to see any more just sit him.

Agreed with Jcardstore, Keegan and JWill can shut it down. I think Tre Mann is there too. OKC knows what he is. Just throw the unknowns or guys that need the minutes get out there.

Colin Castelton might be playing his way onto the roster for the Lakers. Or, he is putting up a real nice audition for someone to grab him and stash him.

Branham and Blake Wesley look like they may be serviceable rotation pieces for the Spurs this season. That would be big for them if they can put up solid numbers.

Social media has killed Miller the first two games but the Hornets summer league team is absolutely awful. Bouknight has been terrible on offense and defense, I'm not sure why the Hornets continue to play him because he doesn't look like he wants to be there. Nick Smith is a combo guard instead of a PG and still a project. Defenses can play off of everybody besides Miller.

I said Miller will need some time to adjust offensively and so will Wemby. Defensively both look good which is how you stay on the court

This is partially true but no way am I giving Miller a pass. He had 15 fouls and 10 TOs those first two games. He was not assertive at all on offense either. He looks better tonight though.

Hopefully he is not another Hornets bust. Bouknight needs to cut.

Exactly. That’s what I saw from the first game. When he pressed, he got muscled and knocked around. Will take a little bulk to play through it. Glad to see he settled. Blazers are knocking down shots though

His handles and stride length should make up for it. He and Chet basically have identical builds, yet Chet seems to get off a lot more shots within the restricted area.

It'll come. But right now I think he's making things more difficult for himself and overthinking things/trying to appease the highlight crowd with difficult shots. If he keeps his handle tight and increases aggression, there's only 3 possible outcomes for the defense:

- hacking foul
- 2 shots
- and juan

Check out Craig Porter Jr for Cleveland. He's from my home town and didn't have the easiest childhood but he always kept his nose clean and worked hard. He was over shadowed in HS due to HS politics but was always the best player on the court. Does everything well on both ends of the court. Went to juco for a year then was offered a scholarship at Wichita State. Before the draft he had work outs with about a dozen teams. He didn't get drafted but was offered a 2 way contract immediately after the draft by Cleveland. He's been getting about 20 minutes a night and doing well. I hope he makes it one way or the other, really good kid.
