Suspect autos on eBay

I came across three 2022 Stadium Club Chrome auto cards on eBay that I believe are fake.

I don't see these auto cards on the checklist at cardboard connection, but the most damning evidence is the abscense of "Topps Certified Autograph Issue" on the front of any of the cards.

It looks like someone got a hold of some Topps stickers and put them on these three cards. They could be actual sticker autos of the three players, but I wouldn't bet on it.

The seller is celebsignatures 98.6% positive feedback and over 2000 items sold

For whatever reason these aren't on any checklist. I just listed a Manny Machado that I looked everywhere for but no comps. But at least mine has the certification on the front and back. Not sure why these only have it on the back.

Your Machado is actually from the 2022 Stadium Club nonchrome set. They had chrome autos in it. The Mays is NOT in the 2022 Stadium nonchrome auto set.

There are many cards from 2022 Stadium Club Chrome that have the "The signing of all autographs is witnessed by a Topps representative to guarantee authenticity." on the back, but are not autos. Having the "Topps Certified Autograph Issue" is on all autos I've seen.

Yeah, I posted about these in the baseball forums the other day.
Clearly someone trying to take advantage of the erroneous autograph language Topps added to the reverse of the cards.

In the Reddit thread linked in my post, someone notes the seller claims to have acquired the three cards from a show.

Not sure if this is the first occurrence but it looks like scammers are trying to take advantage of the misprinted autograph language on the reverse of the refractor cards.

No different than all of the 2006 Bowman Originals Pujols autos still floating around. If these fakers were smart they would only list what is in the checklist and within stated print runs.

That's part of the confusion but Harper (some others) do have legit sticker autos.

In the thread I linked, a BO member even shared an image of a recent Harper sticker auto they received from Topps.

they are using what looks like an older Topps sticker and either forging or lifting it off another card and sticking it on the new one.

Update, 18 hours to go and the Willie Mays "auto" is at $341. Yadi at $129. The Harper appears to have been taken down early.

That will be interesting to watch. Unfortunately,
nothing is standardized but occasionally the listing is removed from ebay, after an item fails.

eBay was made aware of the issue, will CGC catch the problem?

It will likely get flagged for the item specifics. Says it's a "pearl white" parallel, from "2022 Topps Chrome", and serial numbered, none of which are true.

I also can't remember the last product Mays had autographs in, maybe Topps Tribute a decade ago? I could be wrong. It is odd though that of all products (with all due respect) to use his last remaining sticker autos on, why use them on Stadium Club Chrome?

Wow, they didn't even bother to center the sticker. I would hope the previous ones got flagged by eBay authentication. If they did, then the seller can't claim ignorance that he "bought these at a card show."

eBay isn't consistent but previously removed the listing after an item failed. I noticed the buyer of the Yadier Molina left positive feedback and the Mays listing is still active, so at last one appears to have passed. Would be really curious to know if the Mays passed authentication.

Anyways, the Trout auction didn't last long. Already pulled from eBay.

Yes, that does appear to be the copy that was previously removed. I tagged ebay earlier this morning and they supposedly will review the listing. :rolleyes:

I also reported the item as counterfeit. It's a strange coincidence that the same guy keeps finding these autos that he's "never seen before."

Not sure if this is new, but the last couple items I've flagged, actually included email followup from eBay. eBay still needs to do a better job shutting down sellers who repeatably list counterfeits but this looks promising, if they are getting better at taking down reported items.
