View Full Version : Smart or Dumb: Sending a 25k+ card to a weekly auction instead of premier.

Have a high end card I'm planning on selling in the next few weeks. Definitely going to go through either PWCC or Goldin (leaning PWCC as of right now), and based on comps I am incredibly confident it's at bare minimum a 20k card with a good chance to do 25-30. I'm sure conventional wisdom would be to send this to one of the monthly premier auctions, but I'm seriously considering sending it to a weekly auction instead.
My logic is, even though a 20k card is in like the top .001% of most valuable sports cards ever created, in a monthly premier auction, it probably won't even be a top 20-25 card and would very likely be overshadowed by cards worth 10x+ more. In most weekly auctions though, it would be the biggest card in the entire thing, and therefore would get the most attention and be the first thing every bidder sees when they click on the auction. Plus the PWCC premier auction charges you a flat 2k fee just to get in, as well as the 10% they always take of the final sale. I've sold plenty of like 8-10k cards in weekly auctions and have gotten paid every time, so I'm also not really too concerned that it won't be paid for since the weekly auctions have less strict buyer verification.
Curious what you guys think, am I overthinking it or is there maybe some validity in my though process?

So you are paying $4-5k to have someone else to sell the card for you.
Why not just list the card on Ebay and sell it yourself. If you have a store, there is a cap on your final selling fee. I'm not sure what it is for others but I know mine is around $250. You do have the 3% fee as well but that's a lot better than 20%.

They must have changed the process at PWCC as I've sold 3 cards through their Premier auctions and never had to pay a $2K fee to get them in. With the 20% buyer's premium, I received an additional 10% payout above the final sale price and PWCC got the other 10%. Last card I sold through them was back in March of 2022 so things may have changed since then.

Same for me. And that was two months ago. And there’s no way I’d send a $20-$25k card to weekly auction.

My account manager at PWCC usually suggest to send anything valued less than $25k to weekly vs. monthly. I would think monthly would give more buyers time to view and more traffic, but at the end of the day, if the card is valued a given amount, it'll still fetch that amount either way. Also, you need to time it around any hype there is. I assume it's not listed now, but I would've list it to overlap with the national's just due to the hype of people wanting to buy something and alot of social media hype of the card show.

Buy a plane ticket & take it to the National & sell yourself for straight up cash.

It is incredibly difficult to sell (and actually get paid) for any card over around 10-15k on ebay. There are actually people who make solid profit buying high end cards on there and then just immediately sending them to PWCC/Goldin auctions. I've seen cards sit at something like 25k OBO for weeks/months, the seller eventually sells it for 20k, and then less than a month later the card the card is up on Goldin and ends at 30k on auction.

Wow I'm actually a moron, totally misread the terms. They say that "A minimum of 2k of the price realized is paid to PWCC." So as long as the card sells for over 20k you pay no extra fees. Thank you for the comment, never would've double checked without it.

These are the Premier rules.
A minimum of $2,000 of the price realized is always paid to PWCC on each Premier Auction lot.
-The hammer price refers to the maximum winning bid, excluding the 20% buyer's premium. If an item sells for $250,000 or lower, the seller receives 110% of the hammer price.
-If an item sells for $250,001 - $1,000,000, the seller receives 112.5% of the hammer price.
-If an item sells for $1,000,001 or higher, the seller receives 115% of the hammer price.
So if your card sells for a bid of $20k. Buyer pays $24k and you get $22k. If your card sells for a bid of $10k, buyer pays $12k and you get $10k.

Yeah, I assumed that they took 2k on top of the fees. So I thought on a 20k card, buyer would pay 24, fees would get you to 22, and then they'd take 2 so you'd walk away with 20.
