This is being discussed and a few retired sluggers have said they would like to participate.

https://www.si.com/fannation/mlb/fastball/news/ken-griffey-jr-david-ortiz-jim-thome-and-albert-pujols-might-bring-a-legends-home-run-derby-to-all-star-week

Currently Griffey Jr, Ortiz, Thome and Pujols have expressed interest.

Quite a few guys would make this a very fun event. McGwire, Bonds, A-Rod, Manny, Thomas, Beltre, Canseco, Vladdy Daddy.

The list could grow and grow. They'd have to go back to the old Out format or the Really Old Innings format from the TV show.

This would be a very good TV show. Do a weekly bracket... spread it out over 6-7 weeks. 16 man bracket.

Would people be interested?

I would prefer to remember them in their active days....bunch of mostly fat older guys does nothing for me. Easy pass for me....or is it hard pass?

I was at this game in 1982, but they should do another old-timers game. The Cracker Jacks Old Timers game was a blast and gave me the only chance to ever see players that had retired. They brought in the outfield a little, but it's where Luke Appling hit a HR at 75 of age. Aaron, Dimaggio, Musial, Spahn, Killebrew, Banks, Feller, Ford among others. I was 16 at the time, but what a fun game.

Why don't they try and do another game similar to the one that was done at RFK?? I think it would be incredible to see many of the 80's & 90's stars playing again.

If they get injured?

They're old(er) and out of playing shape (and still in a million times better shape than me or any of us here, yes, I know, that's beside the point). You mean "when" they get hurt.

But the beauty is, the answer - oh well! They won't cost their team anything. Way better than if someone gets hurt in the real Derby.

No, i would like to forget that generation of roid abusers. Haven't they done enough damage to the sport.

Do a slow pitch beer league softball variation with a moved in fence, juiced softball bats and balls.

I think Frank Thomas is already disqualified due to all that Nugenix in his system, but his wife likes it, so it's ok :)

Damage the sport or saved baseball. Take away all top home run hitters of the time that took or likely took stoeirds who are you left with that’s the face of baseball? Mike Sweeney? Doug Mientkievwicz? Exciting times should be thankful of what those guys did for baseball and the excitement they brought

Yes! I was hoping to see a mention of that Luke Appling dinger. Also, in the third Cracker Jack game, Hank Aaron hit a pretty awesome broken bat HR off Bob Feller.

They could still put an impressive list together just from the guys that have never actually been proven to have taken steroids. Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Griffey, Big Papi, Thome... it would be a good reminder that the MLB chose to look the other way for most of that period and also that due process still matters.

My first thought is that I'd watch it.

But then I think of these guys in baseball jerseys, 40-100 lbs heavier then when they played and I'm sure I would turn off after 2 minutes.
