View Full Version : Selling on Instagram

I've sold on Twitter plenty, but I recently created an Instagram to show off my mail days and drive focus to my eBay store.
I'll have random accounts follow me (or DM me without following me) and mention that they're interested in my cards if they're still for sale without specifying which cards, though there's nothing in my IG posts that would suggest the cards I'm posting are for sale.
I had one account today lead with the above message. When I explained that none of my IG cards were FS, but my eBay cards were FS, they went to my eBay store, grabbed a couple screenshots of two of my higher-end items, and made a relatively fair offer for both cards shipped.
Is this standard operating procedure for IG? I'm used to different interactions on Twitter, so my scammer alarms went up on this interaction. There's one comment on one of this user's posts that mention "scammer." I'm just not sure of the potential angle in terms of a scam?

I've sold a bunch of cards through IG, never though twitter. none of the sales were related to anything I posted on Ebay, but if they went to your Ebay and sent you screen shots of what they wanted and made you offers....whats the issue?
have them pay via PayPal and ship to the address listed.

They may try to get you to accept payment from a fake or or hacked account. Usually there is a reason they cannot just go through ebay.

It's the same first vague DM around the lines of "interested in your cards if still for sale" that I've gotten from 4-5 different accounts at this point. No specific mention of WHAT cards I posted on IG (or on eBay) that they're interested in.
It seems like a fishing expedition, and then the one that I actually interacted with today pulled a couple screenshots from my eBay listings (only after I mentioned only my eBay listings are FS) that are nothing like what I have showing on my IG.
I've been selling on eBay and Twitter for over 3 years at this point, so I usually don't get concerned with scammers any longer and think I can spot them fairly easily. It's the similar vague opening message from multiple accounts over the last week or so that's sounding alarms for me.
Maybe it's just me being overly cautious, I don't know.

I've made some sales on IG, some from cards I posted and some from sellers who saw some of my cards on eBay and wanted to get a deal. Every once in awhile, I'll get a guy asking if I'll take Zelle and I always tell them no. Most of the time the deal doesn't happen and I always chalk it up to the guy was probably trying to scam me.
Do yourself a favor, only take Paypal G&S.

That's typically the only method of payment I've taken when selling cards off eBay's platform (here, Twitter, etc.).
Is there anything disconcerting about the random "are those cards for sale" DMs as an opening message from 4-5 different accounts this past week without specifying which cards they were referring to in their first message? Just seems like a strange opening to me.
