View Full Version : 1948 Bowman George Mikan SGC 9

I came across with this lot at Goldin, and the last time I checked, a PSA 9 sold for $800,000 last year, and even a PSA 8 sold for $147,000. Considering the only higher graded Mikan is at the Smithsonian and no chance to be ever sold to the private hand, how much do you think this SGC 9 Mint will end up selling?

first question to ask is why it's not slabbed by PSA so that it would sell for a lot more in that grade

This card has diamond cut and PSA has always been very consistent about not penalizing these defects.

Not what I was getting at.
Eye appeal still matters even for high grade rarities.

Disagree. I bet PSA would give it an ungraded "miscut" assessment, which can be slabbed as AUTHENTIC. Also, the left-right centering is going to keep the price down. It's just not an attractive card, IMO.

there is only one sgc 9 and none higher, and according to some opinions here, if graded raw by PSA, it would only receive an authentic. This is a very interesting suggestion. I remember similar opinions were shared back in the days when BGS was dominating the market

Maybe people don't understand all the definitions, because "miscut" and "diamond-cut" can be used for different things.
This card I believe to be miscut/diamond cut, because the right border seems like it is significantly longer than the left border. It's just not a rectangle. That is the type of Miscut that PSA normally refuses to give a number to.
They also have the miscut (MC) qualifier for cards that have parts of another card on them. That is not what I'm talking about here.
Diamond cut can either refer to a non-rectangular card, or one that has significant tilt, where the image is printed on a rectangular card at some type of lean, i.e. not parallel to the borders. Does that make more sense?

what other hobby puts foam around an $800k card? You should see the holders for high level stamps.

I do notice it at long last, the top border does get larger toward the right. Supposing it's not a design flaw from Bowman, it's not cut straight
Well, at least we have an answer to my question as to why it's not in a PSA slab.
To not look shady and sow further distrust in the hobby, you'd think sellers and auction houses would explain this sort of thing
but alas the "hobby" doesn't seem interested in cleaning up its act

Maybe you learned today. Most people that are active here know all this stuff. How many times have you seen people ask about 1986 Fleer Jordans that got "Altered stock" from PSA for being kept in a non-recessed screwdown? The standard recommendation is to send those to SGC or BGS. Same for other issues. There are SOME flaws that PSA is good and consistent at detecting, but for the people that need their cards in slabs with number grades, it's better to get a number from SGC or BGS than an AUTH from PSA.
And PSA has never had a guarantee on auto authentication, to my knowledge.
They also don't guarantee that they got the card information right for mechanical errors, so if someone gets scammed on those 1990 Topps Frank Thomas cards thinking they're actually Tiffany as labeled, PSA will just change the label.

That card wasn't graded by SGC because it would receive an A. That card was graded by SGC because they knew it wouldn't get a 10, but probably a 9 with PSA. So, they went with SGC to get a 9.5 and sell it for more.
