For me personally I got

1. Prizm
2. Optic
3. Select
4. Obsidian
5. Mosaic

I am a little worried about all these additional parallels that have been added over the years and feel that true hobby parallels are the only ones that will hold value in the long run. For instance id rather have a true prizm purple /99 over a purple disco /75.

I like the look of Obsidian the best.

Optic has gotten really boring.

Hot take: Prizm is an ugly product and I can’t believe it’s considered as a flagship product in the hobby.

I think optic having a history of On Card Auto's makes Optic king in my opinion l. If talking base for me it has to be numbered like immaculate as a base set. While it's not "chrome" at least it's numbered.

As someone who has collected cards for 20 years about, you are totally right to feel uneasy about recent products' parallels long-term value. In fact, I don't believe ANY cards from the past few years are good long-term investments. Or if there are any, it's a very very minority and you'd most likely get lucky in that case. It's 2-fold - 1. The supply of parallels/cards is so much greater, which is not realized necessarily since there's so much sealed product of recent sets that will be broken, 2. They are chased more than older cards of 5-10 years (so will just lose their "new shine" as years go along, as all sets do) ... Look up Kobe, Lebron, Dirk, Garnett, Pick a superstar parallel cards from the 2000's and early 2010's. The supply of #ed parallels available is MUCH LESS than current products for these cards, yet they don't go for crazy amounts in general. Guys like Doncic, Giannis have so many #ed parallels nowadays I don't trust the long-term value of them really. I personally stay away.

Donruss Optic
Select but pre 2020
Prizm
Contenders Optic
not sure here

I think in a few years people will really start enjoying Panini product made from 2012-2019. Loved all the game used on card auto stuff and a lot the chrome sets were really good with low print runs. The gold to /10 were great but so was the mojo /25, the orange /25, and just the pure silvers were gorgeous cards.

Part of the problem with parallels from the '00s.... Most of them sucked.

The focus for card companies at that point was all Game Used jerseys. Some sets, like Exquiste, Ultimate, etc, do great. A lot don't.

There were very few parallels that mattered. But the ones that did most: Topps Chrome refractors and Gold Refractors, do very well. And there were 50 TC Gold Refractors most year. Which is why I still love Prizm Gold.

Also, with less of a focus on game used in the Panini era, they've managed to put together a few nice insert sets. I'm not talking Kaboom. Heck, one set has actually continued to slowly rise over the last year and half, which says a lot.

1.OPTIC (On card autos unlike Prizm, Fun & great looking inserts, Classic Rated Rookie logo...the designs always grow on you in the end)

2.PRIZM (for panini legacy purpose only)

3.Obsidian (the RPA'S & auto inserts are fire, I don't mind sticker autos if the designs are eye pattern catchy + Shiny. It's like if they collaborated with a fashion designer like say Versace you would get this brand)

4.Select (too many levels and parallels..but the Animal print ones look amazing the elephant, zebra or tiger stripes would be the ones i would go for long term)

5.Mosaic (Would probably only collect 2019 because that pandemic era nostalgia will hit us hard one day lmao. plus ja morant, zion, Herro, Bol bol & etc that rookie classic is very interesting)

Prizm and Optic are the only two that I actively seek out. Prizm probably has the better legacy as of now, but the simpler Optic design is my personal preference.

Select is a bit confusing with the different levels/variations for each player. The designs are actually nice, and some of the parallels are fantastic but I would personally prefer a single base/level for each player.

Mosaic is a decent alternative, with several appealing and unique variations like genesis, honeycomb and peacock.

Obsidian feels like a different category altogether.

1a Prizm
1b Optic
3 Select
4 Mosaic
5 Obsidian

The abundance of parallels has completely devalued the base sets and inserts. Will any of the base rookie cards or inserts from the last 5-10 years hold any value. The silver Prizm variant of any card will be the “rookie” card. Unless you are set building is there any justification for holding a base card(of any kind). The Prizm variants look better almost 100 percent of the time and more scarce.

I'm not even a big collector and I have zero interest in cards that aren't numbered.

Somewhere in a dark corner, Spectra is crying right now :(

For what it's worth, I loved the simple geometric base designs of 2017 and 2018 Spectra. Other years...yikes.

Prizm is easily number one. It’s not close. Select is number two. Optic used to be number two but has fallen off. The other brands are not even in the conversation.
