Hello!

Back into the collecting hobby after some time off, and now a bit overwhelmed (as I am sure you hear a lot) by how much the industry has changed.

I am going to start out with a simple question. If this can be answered in another thread, let me know and I apologize:

Why can't I find any Scoot Henderson cards with the word team name or with him in the jersey? I know there are licensing issues (which I don't fully grasp yet), but I imagine Panini would offer his card by now.

Thanks - and if there is any general knowledge on this subject that you can direct me to, much appreciated.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I haven’t seen any NBA jersey cards for this new rookie class yet.

Scoot has a Panini Instant draft night card with Blazers logos so it’s just a matter of time before 23/24 Hoops or Donruss comes out (can’t remember which is first) or a rookie photo shoot Panini Instant drops.

Until then, there are a number of licensed Scoot G League cards from both Panini and Bowman.

Panini is backed up, severely, (for multiple reasons) so the release schedule is quite delayed. You're looking at December or January at the earliest for the NBA Hoops release, which will be Scoot's first official rookie card.

Ok, thanks very much and then any idea what I am seeing on ebay with descriptions like:

Rookie #3 SCOOT HENDERSON RC 2023-24 Panini Instant NBA First Look RPS PRESALE

No idea what this is.

And, I am assuming the G league cards aren't actually rookie cards, right? Like the only true rookie cards are, as dunkindutchmen says, what we will see in Dec/Jan?

This is the link to Panini Instant. It's an affordable way to build a PC.

https://www.paniniamerica.net/panini-instant.html

This is the link to Topps Now. It's similar to Panini Instant.

Probably good to know:

Fanatics, which just bought Topps, is attempting to monopolize the trading card market and put Panini America out of business. They have already signed exclusive licensing agreements with NBA Player's Association that obviously exclude Panini when their current contract expires. The NBAPA and Fanatics is attempting to fastrack both deals. The benefit is Fanatics could end up buying Panini America so that we continue to see the current releases.

I consider Scoot's Panini G Leage #180 his true rookie card, but that's probably a minority opinion.

There's no perfect definition of a rookie card nor will there every be.

Is Jordan's true rookie the iconic 86/87 Fleer or one of his many Star issues that were made earlier? The Thompson twins have 4 issues of Topps OTE ('rookie' year Chrome & Inception, '2nd' year Chrome & Chrome Sapphire) already. There's a massive thread on the baseball forum on whether prospects who appeared in 2021 Bowman's Best are actually true rookies compared to 2022 releases with the designated RC logo.

And with NIL and alternative routes to the NBA, these discrepancies will only deepen in the future.

IMO, if you're buying to collect, get whatever you like and define it as you wish. But if you're buying to invest, you'll need to read the tea leaves and get on board accordingly.

I was wondering how NIL is affecting the rookie card market... I guess this is one way.
