View Full Version : Ebay cancelled item after purchase question

For the first time, I recently had a seller cancel an item after I had purchased it. He had relisted it three times, each time lowering the price, until this last time it was an auction, and it went for less than expected(most likely why he cancelled the order). Are you able to leave feedback for this? I cannot seem to find it. I guess once it is cancelled and refunded, then the seller can just wash his hands of the sale? Thanks in advance....

Yes you can leave feedback. And imo appropriate feedback is deserved when a seller cancels an auction sale, in effect setting their own reserve in a no reserve auction.

eBay doesn’t make it easy though, they hide the way to leave feedback, you can’t just do it from the purchase menu.

To leave feedback, leave feedback for any other random transaction. Then click on ‘Leave more feedback’. It will take you to a page that lets you bulk leave feedback, transaction after transaction. It will be listed there to leave feedback.

There may be a direct link to that feedback page, dunno. But that’s how I do it.

Some sellers you might have to wait 7 days to leave feedback.

I know ebay will remove feedback in some cases. I think they are more lenient if the seller contacts buyer about issue especially if it's a legit reason.

I still hate the fact buyers are able to cancel with no recourse and sellers get punished for denying their requests. While seller potentially get punished in multiple ways for cancelling even when it's a legit reason

For a purchase you need to wait a week, but negative feedback is warranted here.

What was the reason the seller gave for the cancellation?

As others have said, you may have to wait 7 days to leave the feedback, but you should be able to. It's also possible that the seller can request a removal and eBay might do it.

How do you do that on an auction? I can understand how it can and does happen with fixed price but not auctions

There's no way to know if they are just lying and didnt want to sell at that price, or they are actually missing it from stock.

I'd guess about a 98% chance they just didnt want to sell for the price, especially since you said it sold for low.

Also I am completely opposed to ebay removing negative feedback for situations like this. I understand they do sometimes....but they shouldnt. Seller shouldnt be able to set any reserve they want to in a no reserve auction, and get out of the sale with basically no repercussion. Not only does ebay removing justified feedback jeopardize the integrity of its auctions and feedback system, but ebay removing bad feedback is a conflict of interest- they are probably biased towards doing so because more overall negative feedback in the system = less overall sales from reluctant buyers = less fee money for ebay. So it is in their interest to minimize negative feedback out there, by getting rid of justified negative feedback.

What ebay should at least do, is take into consideration whether it was an auction or a buy it now for a canceled transaction. In the former, the appropriate feedback should basically stand no matter what. Buy it Nows I dont care about as much.

All of my auctions are just BIN where I hit sell similar, even 1¢ w free shipping. It wouldn't be any different for one or the other.

Sellers do get dinged if they cancel for an "out of stock" reason.

Too many "out of stock" cancellations and the seller's FVF will increase.

Regardless, the a negative is deserved in this scenario, especially if the seller didn't reach out to explain the situation prior to cancelling and refunding.

I forget what the other options are, is it still ‘buyer asked to cancel’ and ‘problem with buyers shipping address’? If so, then what stops a dishonest seller from simply choosing one of those (even if not true)…then there would be little to no repercussion for a seller implementing the ol hidden reserve if negative feedback doesn’t even get to stick.

Granted maybe eBay is accumulating the stats behind the scene and looking for problematic patterns, but wouldn’t hold my breath on anything happening with that. Even then the dishonest seller could still do it once or a few times for some crucial auctions. There are some major flaws with eBay auctions on both the buying and selling side.

Selling: too easy for sellers to implement the ol hidden reserve
Buying: shill bidding rampant, especially with consignors, which is a gigantic conflict of interest, and I’m not convinced eBay cares that much. Be very wary of any consignment auction on ebay at this point.

Another reason the neg should stick for this situation- for some (clearly not nearly all) sellers, negs do act as deterrents for doing something like canceling the auction sale.

I understand that some people on here think feedback doesnt mean much, and there may be some truth to that, but it's just a fact that many sellers out there do want to maintain a high-standing or perfect feedback record (be it for whatever reason: they think it means a lot to buyers, ego, they dont want to appear as someone not doing the right thing). So if ebay simply removes these justified negs at whim, it takes away that deterrent for such a seller, leaving little to no repercussion. Meaning it's more likely for you to get an auction win canceled than if ebay did the correct thing and always let the negs for canceled auction sales stick.
