Gentrified Tatum.
Plays all 3 levels. Great defense. Point-forward capable. Also from Mass.

My mistake.
Cooper comes from a fam of Celt superfans. I believe Tatum is one of his favorite players. Doesn't hurt that they're both Duke alums.
I mean they pretty much emulate each other in every aspect, all the way down to build. Cooper's got massive shoulders. The interesting aspect is that his body is already NBA ready at 17. Whether he has additional upside in that department or will this pretty much be who he'll always be (which is still damn good) is the interesting aspect.
Knee High's still my guy, but Keith Van Horn couldn't run an offense if his life depended on it, nor was he a defensive lockdown.
Cooper's much closer to Grant Hill as a prospect, though the melanated differences may make that correlation harder to identify for most.

I definitely agree that Van Horn would kill it in today's game. I think Cooper's offense is very similar to Van Horn yet his defense is much better.
The NBA is filled with guys with similar talent. The difference between the great players and regular players can be as simple as the drive to be great. The thing I like most about Cooper Flagg is that he has the intangible drive to be better than everyone else. He wants to dominate other players. That, combined with his talent, tells me that he will continue to be a top tier player in the NBA.

Utah, Washington, Charlotte, New Orleans and Philly have the top 5 odds at the first pick.
Which team would be the best landing spot for him? Charlotte, with the close proximity to Duke seems like the best geographical fit.
Zion and Flagg would be cool.... Would Philly trade Embiid if they got the #1?
Utah and Washington just seem like career (and collector) purgatory at this point...

Yea, I know there are people in the room when the lottery takes place, and it's not rigged, but man it sure feels like it right now.
Also this is a good reason to show the lottery happening live because this reeks of it being rigged.
Like, what are the odds of doing one of the dumbest trades in NBA history, falling into the lottery after expecting to be a playoff team and seomehow winning the lottery with a less than 2% chance?

Someone suggested a possible: AD for PG, #3 pick, 2028 unprotected LAC pick, future 76ers pick. It's an interesting thought. Esp as the Clips might really suck in 3 years.
It would also give the Mavs a ton of add'tl draft capital to go get Giannis, in addition to pkg a couple of guys like PJ Washington to make salaries match.

If you're not exhausting every avenue to improve the team and increase their chances of winning, you're simply not doing your job.
To start a team, I'd take Flagg and his rookie contract over Giannis and his $52M-$60M annual salary, but the Mavs are in win-now mode.
Would the Bucks be willing to throw any more into the deal? Giannis + role players/expiring contracts/draft picks? You don't know if you aren't taking offers.
If you're the GM, you say you're not taking offers because you're lazy or incompetent. Maybe both. If I heard the GM of my team talk like that, I would be pretty frustrated.

Mavs said they want Flagg and aren't looking to trade the pick.
I don't get why teams limit themselves like this. Just say you're looking for the best way to improve your franchise and at least field offers for the #1 pick. Maybe some team will give you a godfather offer. You can always say no.
I know what you’re getting at, but I think the GF offer was a horse’s head in his bed.

Fakers/Jazz/Wizz maximalists down bad.
Dallas mortgages the farm for Glass Joe. Everyone claims the most lopsided trade since Griner for Merchant of Death. Yet both squads get trounced early. And Nico gets gifted the next Great Blanco Hope successor.
While I respect the Spurs fanbase, they have absolutely no say in 'rigged' or 'favorable' draft rigging Stifle theories.
IIRC, Spurs have either stayed the same or moved up in EVERY draft they've been in, and moved up in every scenario where they're a projected top 8 pick. Got Slemby last year, now get a free shot at Harper . Insane.
Conversely, the Mavs have NEVER moved up in their team's history. This 1/50 scenario, while quite unlikely, isn't some astronomical event, and especially when you take into consideration how many times they've been stumped in the past. Seems more like a regression to the mean. You break enough hobby cases and you're bound to eventually strike a Nebula.
In any event, looking forward to the revised lineup with gentrified Tatum and a hopefully healthy flat earther.

I definitely won't run from the inclusion of the Spurs in the rigged conversation. Especially with Wemby...the since childhood story...from France...mentored by Parker...on and on. EVERYONE knew where he was going. tbh looked like Flagg wanted to join him so I was side-eyeing the move up. And was a little relieved tbh that the Spurs got #2 because then Houston AND Dallas would be upset today :D
And Castle last year at 4 where they finished with the 5th worst record wasn't a stretch. So I may regress from "rigged" but the results are strangely convenient. Undeniably, bet on it convenient. Especially for the situation the Mavs found themselves in to re-engage an estranged fanbase after gifting a storied franchise a new lung. Everybody wins. Even remembering Lebron's vacation to Miami. Cavs got like 3/4 #1s? It does beg the question because who has hit like that, after losing a superstar, which is where the scrutiny lies.

Firstly, I appreciate your self awareness and candor. Salute. And if it's any Texas team that I not-so-openly support, it's the Spurs. Classy organization that deserves everything good that has and continues to come its way.
The optics definitely couldn't have been worse. And we all know corruption exists and has already been exposed throughout the NBA's history.
However, there are certain control measures that would make some giant draft lottery collusion theory quite difficult.
There are 14 prominent members of the NBA media present during the drawing (several household names). They are accompanied by a matching amount of team representatives, all sitting with a watchful eye praying their ball doesn't get drawn early.
So essentially, it would take 28 separate individuals, along with the staked reputation of one of the largest domestic accounting agencies in existence...to all be in unison with some grand orchestrated Gollum scheme to gift ONE undeserving franchise with a pick...strictly off the strength of somehow salvaging the league whilst simultaneously screwing over 13 other squads on the possibility of acquiring a franchise transforming talent....just cuz they want to help rectify the wrongs of a lopsided trade that they were not even a part of.
Now I don't know how many GM's would be particularly keen on this voluntary sacrifice, as a great majority of them spent their entire season intentionally tanking and conceding revenue all in the hopes of having the best odds of landing a generational talent. I'm also fairly certain the players and players union wouldn't take well to such an inside yet not so inside secret.
Is it possible? Sure. Anything in life is possible. Is it likely? Probably not.
49ersSF
05-14-2025, 11:48 PM
It's not really a matter of what GM's want. GM's are employees of the owner and the owners of the league have the say. The NBA's revenue-sharing plan makes all the owners benefit equally. If the league as a whole benefits from having one of its biggest stars in LA the owners will go along with it and compensate the team that loses the player.
It's all about making sure the league captures its largest revenue gains whether it's scripting the playoffs, moving pieces around, or whatever else they need to do in order to make sure they are generating interest and in turn revenue.
ninjacookies
05-15-2025, 12:02 AM
Right. Because actual success means nothing. Logical.
Why the heck do players and teams even try then, if it's just some giant equal rev share affiliate corp. Would make sense for everyone just to tank simultaneously since the eventual financial outcomes remain constant. Less work - same destination.
Oh wait. No. It's not equal. Because certain teams gain substantially larger personal revenue shares due to individual success which leads to increased ticket sales/merchandising/sponsorship opportunities. Which in turn increases the future potential sell price of the franchise.
I'm all for a good Joe Rogan ayahuasca sit down, but sometimes certain steps must be taken to ensure proper thought is given to reality variables.

The value window for rookie cards is 1st and 2nd year off season for non lottery picks on non-playoff teams.

I don't think anyone should have expected him to come out the gates just like he left the college game. That being said, I don't think he's gonna be the next superstar, but I think he can definitely become an All-Star level player and have a very good 15-20 year career.

There are going to be a lot less eyes and pressure on him if the season keeps up the way week 1 has gone. A lot of young players really having breakout performances. It's all about efficiency in the NBA. Half the league can put up 35 on a given night if the usage is there. Especially in the offensive environment which exists now (pace, rules etc)
I was actually shocked watching him in college last year - with all the hype surrounding him coming into Duke I expected a much more dynamic talent/well-rounded player.
Think he'll be a good pro, might even nick an All-NBA 3rd team once or twice, but I don't see the potential for much more. He's not a great shooter, his ball-handling is shaky, not a natural creator for others... maybe Michael Porter Jr.+ if I had to make a comparison.

I’ve been picking up his Power Players all day! Definitely fun at these prices.
As another poster stated, his Topps Chrome will always trump these, especially the refractors

What you always like to see with a rookie is consistent improvement.
Oct. 13.4/6.2/2.8 41.0 FG
Nov. 17.8/6.7/3.7 47.7 FG
Dec. 20.6/5.2/3.4 55.4 FG

What a massive bust - a few of you in here called it. Already 18 and only 42 points 7 boards and 6 dimes. When will they send him to the G league to develop?

Keith van Horn's game was tailor-made for today's game. He'd average 25 a game.
However, I believe Cooper's ceiling is on the level of KD and Tatum. His skill set is elite. On the offensive end, he's super quick yet strong enough to body people around, he processes the game much faster than everyone else on the court, he's athletic, and he only has to work on his 3-point shot. The fact that he is able to score at will currently without the threat of a consistent 3-point shot simply means that once he gets his 3-point percentage up to 35%+, his all-around game is going to reach superstar level. On the defensive side, he already is playing defense at a near All-NBA level. He'll be a consistent All-NBA level defensive player much of his career, as he is one player who dedicates himself to playing defense.
After watching how quickly he is adapting to the NBA its not a matter of if but when he will become a top 10 player in the league.

It's a shame that his singles prices are so crazy, and product has been basically nonexistent here on shelves here in central Maine (not a shocker at all). Will look to grab whatever I can of him.
It has been fun following along with the behind the scenes of his NBA journey to this point via his parents on FB (had his mom as a teacher for sixth grade).

Yes, wait till he has 40 more products worth of rookie cards out over the next year and you’ve missed your opportunity to sell high.

Dookies have a horrible stench on the NBA hardwood.
Maybe Jay Tay was the freshest, but he still ended up stanking up the hobby world.

Jalen Johnson, Banchero, Tatum, Kyrie.
Duke players have dealt with an inordinate amount of injuries (Hurley, Hill, Jason Williams to name a few that were career-altering). But Duke has also produced tons of NBA players since 1990.

Yet another terrible troll take from you.
Duke and Kentucky have - by far - produced the most AND the best NBA players over the past 25 years. No other school is close.

Wrong.....and yet another troll take by you.....UCLA wins this argument but feel free to cap it "Over the past 25 years" to win your argument.
Also, the Euro-League is by far the most talented player pool but that doesn't fit your argument.

My argument is that hating on Duke players - which is what hermano was doing - is ridiculous. Duke is an NBA player factory and CURRENTLY blows away all other colleges (along with Kentucky) for total numbers of NBA players and quality of NBA talent.
The current best NBA players from UCLA are Russell Westbrook, Jrue Holiday, Zach Levine, and Norman Powell. Westbrook and Holiday will both be out of the league in a few years. You and hermano are just haters who don't know basketball, or just willingly choose to make terrible arguments to troll people.

Bro looked like Jake Paul with 2 left feet and zero promo out there tonight.
He'll be lucky to sniff Jackie Moon's event worn intimates at this rate.
Thank Allah I went with Chet instead. I mean dang. Can this extra polite Pete Chilcutt knockoff even recite a single line outta NBA Youngboy's discography from memory?

Watching him play last night just really reiterates my thought that he's really better suited as a team's second best player.
When I do get a chance to see him play I just keep coming to that conclusion.

Flagg played nearly as many pro games in 2025 than he did all last season for Duke. Tough games are bound to happen for a kid who just finished celebrating his 19th bday.
Hopefully he isn’t gassed already (mentally as well).
And to compare stats which is crazy when you think about competition:
Level Team/Season GP PTS REB AST STL BLK FG% 3P% FT%
College (Duke, 2024-25) Duke Blue Devils 37 19.2 7.5 4.2 1.4 1.4 48.1% 38.5% 84.0%
NBA (Dallas Mavericks, 2025-26) Mavericks 31 19.4 6.4 3.8 1.2 0.8 49.3% 26.9% 79.4%
