I was just thinking of the box full of rookies that I amassed during my year-and-a half foray into the hobby (purchasing and trading—not just forum posts, watching b-ball, and youtube). It got me through the pandemic.

Has anyone else a strategy of stocking up on a single rookie prior to potential breakthrough? Or do most have a properly diversified mix of potentiates.

Reason I ask is I have around 20 relatively high-end duplicates that I would like to trade for those of a similar caliber player, ceiling still unclear, as a way of diversifying. Includes: NT horizontal RPA /75, Equinox auto /5, gold Incoming, Contenders auto /26, Optic /99, gold Titan, Noir RPA /99, etc.)

Thinking along lines of Mobley, Vassel, Garland, etc.

I mean in a month I will be asking for Cunningham or higher. The fluid nature of basketball ascendancy is built in. That's why you have shows and dealers and stuff.

And Celtics breaks TBH. I mean hitting that Absolute six-swatch crash RPA twice on my first break (as lame as that set came to seem) after only two weeks watching my first NBA games since G5 of the 2017 finals just to root on the Warriors in a coastal barbecue spot, got me really following him at just the right formative time in my clcting career, before I was inundated with too much knowledge of sets and cards. (Specifically that 38 point second half comeback against Spurs on the parquet, his first legacy game). It was fun admiring the old 90s cards as art as well. That 150-crd Jason Kidd collection many pristine raw and covering rookies, parallels, and inserts is still something I flip through once in a while.

And the same guy sold me a set of 6 Pacquio auto photos that I flipped through the other day in awe. Four are weigh ins with the opponent and were actually small-batch signed for the bodyguard of Packman, to make him a few extra bucks in the day and spread the love to supercollectors. I paid a fair price and it put their kids through school during the pandemic, so I think it was a good deal all around. And anyway, this guy prolly has a few more lying around. Interesting that that lifestyle guru guy in Vegas balked at a fair price of $500 each.

What I will never sell is the 2002 Jordan SP Authentic GU swatch he sold me, wizards and all. (I did offer it to some kid at the Las Vegas show for an Anthony Edwards Troposphere he had just had graded a PSA 10, but thank god he refused). That led me to a Kobe from the same set. I love those cards and the way the die cut is over the napkin.

To finish the thought, I do check Nesmith sales regularly after games and have never seen a bump. Tonight I saw a bump (at old prices, its amazing how breaks price in value and inflate it by five, but collectors are the last to follow players they don't follow). He dominated Mobley and whatever team coach was trying to arrange to prove a point to the "stars" this early in the season. And it would have likely worked but not for the Nesmith-anchored secondary. I mean look at the grit sticks is now displaying. And how Nembhard persists through working closely with team. Quite possibly the starting team Ty has built around him in preseason was intentionally set up to give everyone learning opportunities before the cards settled.
