Hello, i recently was gifted 40 misc. card boxes of trading cards. a variety of hockey, baseball, and basketball. the dates go from the 60s to 2000s. my question is, diving into this hot mess what would be the steps per say of cards. Organize them to dates and make sets? make sure each has its own box for categories? Does it even pay to make sets? when it comes to selling how does a person sell cards? can you buy a scanner and scan them into a computer and let the computer world do the work? does a person do it all from their phone? I don't know what to do and its overwhelming! I thought about selling them all as is but there is that one card that if it's in there that i would kick myself about!! any help or anything is appreciated!!

Are the cards sorted at all by sport/year? For me step 1 would be to get a general idea of what you have. Sorting by sport and by year would be a good place to start.

Do you have pictures you could post or share?

Start with organizing buy date. From their organize by similar looking cards. Then start doing research on how much they're worth.

I think it's important, though, that before you do all of that, you need to share what years you're seeing. If you're talking late-80's/early-90's doing research will be virtually worthless.

There are a couple apps that you can take a photo of the card and it will give you a retail value for the card. I wouldn't use it for EVERY card, but it shouldn't be too tough to pick out the HOF's, key rookies, insets and older cards.

Hello, thanks everyone. I went threw two boxes and organized by number. The dates are from 91. I am missing a handful so i am thinking it's not worth while to organize by set.
I am thinking to pull out the rookies and insert cards. That was suggested. So i might try this. Tonight i counted all the boxes and i have 32 of the 3 row cardboard boxes. I have 4 single boxes, and some misc closed boxes.
I don't really know what to do. At this point i am over whelmed. I am attaching pictures.

Any unopened packs or boxes I'd recommend you leave that way. You would do best selling those "junk wax" at flea markets or facebook marketplace.

The other boxes of cards, you'd probably need to find someone local who knows sportcards to just thumb through them rapid fire and pick out the ones to research further. If you list your City/State in your profile or add them to this post, you may find someone trustworthy on the board who can help you identify what to accomplish.

Otherwise, if you just want to get rid of them, list them for like $2,000 OBO on Facebook Marketplace and see if you get any bites. You might lose money, but you'll also lose the headache. Most likely, you'd do better than if you actually parted them out without knowing what is worth anything.

You might be sitting on a gold mine. Show some of the cards from that last NHL box.

Are you looking for anything in particular?

Much of the "junk wax" boxes that were $10 three years ago are probably at least $30-$40 now.

There some value in the unopened boxes. I agree, keep them unopened to sell.
