View Full Version : PSA Question: What determines if you need PSA/DNA grading?
I sent in a few autos to get the cards graded or encased, a few I really don't care about the grades as they're for my PC. One of the cards was marked: PSA/DNA required, no grade no charge.
What determines when you need PSA/DNA dual service?

If the auto is an after market auto/not pack pulled (or pre 1998 auto as mentioned above), like the original card did not have an auto but you got the person to sign the card afterwards, then PSA/DNA is required as PSA requires the auto to be authenticated. I learn the hard way some time ago when I sent in some minor league cards of nobodies for PC and they were returned to me ungraded with the PSA/DNA requirement.
Ok, I missed the pre 1998 requirement. This was a 98/99 hockey card. I'll just resubmit once it's back home. Thanks

- 1998 to current manufacturer/factory autos don't require PSA/DNA
- Anything 1997 and prior manufacturer/factory autos do require PSA/DNA
- Any year card that is signed in person that doesn't come from the factory that way requires PSA/DNA

PSA also keeps a list of commonly faked auto cards that may also require Dual Service, like Willie Mays, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, etc. You might not find out they require DNA on them until you send them in.

And then DNA authenticates the fake auto anyway.

Well, I'm trying to be more gracious in the new year... ;-)

Question that's related to the OP comment. I see that for 3 of the dual autograph cards from 2023 Bowman Best University, 3 cards are listed in the "PSA/DNA" tab even though all the cards were signed prior to being packaged and sent out in boxes. Since all these cards were pack-pulled autos, why are the 3 in the following link listed in the "PSA/DNA certified" section?

The persons that submitted those cards requested dual grading service.
Are you saying they shouldnt have been authenticated?

No, I was just curious why some were showing up on the PSA/DNA certified page. But requesting dual grading makes sense. Thanks!
