Yes, otherwise who would Karen's ask for when they get upset?

The real question is, who's managing the management?
Ironically when a company fails it can be traced back to the top in every single instance. Wework, Sears, FTX, Bed Bath Beyond... just to name a few of the recent high profile ones.

I have long maintained that in a big box retail chain store, the top 15 or so people in a well-run store can run the store better than the corporate people. Reason being that the vast majority of the corporates do not know what it is like to spend time in a store to see how and why it works (or doesn't work). Yes you need the corporate structure, but these corporates need to know why the people on the store level want something done in a certain way and actually listen to them.

good management is necessary, not just management for the sake of it
i work somewhere with mediocre management, no accountability, lack of follow through. so i'd vote we would be better off without it, but good management is absolutely necessary

Absolutely. How many and how many layers is where the debate begins.

Humans naturally form hierarchies so it’s inevitable whether you think it’s necessary or not.
I do find it hilarious the dudes who claims that CEOs & execs do nothing all day. Instead of undercover boss I want to see the opposite.
Take some joker from the help desk and make them CIO for a week and see how quickly they cry

I’ve seen plenty of blowhards who wilted once they were put in charge.

Money can't magically make someone be able to perform.
Decision making, communication, strategic vision, critical thinking etc...
These are skills that most people don't have at a high level. No amount of money can change that. They people at the top are almost always there for a reason, and the people at the bottom, same thing.

What has amazed me during my career is how many high level decision makers are actually fairly useless. They put good people around them and sound like they know what they are talking about but are not capable of making good decisions on their own. They talk the talk, have solid educations, great resumes, but ultimately do not bring much to the table. With many of these guys there is someone else that is really driving the car. They are just better at explaining how to drive the car.
