Hello Everyone. I want to start off by saying that I wholeheartedly am saddened by the Hollywood fires / Floods and What ever else has happened these past few years. Peoples lives and homes mean so much more than my hobby! But this non stop Hollywood fire has me thinking about how many cards and Memorabilia are gone and ruined. My Particular player is Matt Leinart. The College Legend of USC. Reggie Bush was same class. It just has me thinking of how many 1/1's & rare items will never resurface. Of course the hobby is the thrill of the hunt and tracking it down and acquiring the item. I have been in the hobby for 30+ years and love every minute of it and will continue on until i am not able. Maybe most of the rare items are rarer than we know?!?

I live about 20 miles away from the Palisades, and about 10 miles away from another 1000 acre fire that the FD was able to kick the $hit out of before it got out of control.

Twice last week I had to pack some to-go bags and make some decisions on cards and collectables that made it into the bag, and others that couldn't make the cut. All is well is my neighbor hood, but doing some inventory after unpacking, I realized a box of modern 1/1s of some pretty big names (Mahomes, Giannis, Luka) and some more obscure 1/1s wouldn't have made it out. So I'm sure there's some nice stuff that's now gone forever.

Not that it really matters in the big scheme of things... but yeah, that's why we're on a sports card forum, to distract from some of the other things in life.

I had to do the same, I am about less than 2 miles from the palisades fire and had to pack up things on Tuesday and go to a hotel. We’re packed again now. But even in my modest collection, there are cards that are incredibly rare. Had them all at the hotel…

Im glad you are safe! I couldn't even begin to imagine! I lost some cards in a flood 2 years ago and i was thinking about this same thing then. I hope this is over soon!

I can't even imagine how many high-end collectibles have been lost....cards, coins, artwork, etc. The whole situation is a cluster. To the guys on this thread and others from the forum that are close by - glad you are safe and hoping everything ends up ok for you, your family, and your collectibles.

I wonder if any of the people affected had collectable insurance. Hopefully they can at least get some compensation in that regards.

I’ve had this thought about the fires recently and over the years.
As a completist collector I have a love hate with 1/1s. I wonder how many have been lost to natural disasters or even accidentally thrown out over the years. The thrill of the hunt is one thing but hunting a card you need that’s been destroyed and not realizing it is frustrating.

As others have said, glad you all are OK and certainly hope others are as well. I was thinking about all the artwork that must have been destroyed, but there is probably also a ton of memorabilia and cards too. Hope everyone stays safe!

I'm sure the list of collectibles lost in the fire is well into the 9 figure range. You're talking about a large group of very affluent neighborhoods with a lot of expensive artwork collections. Paris Hilton herself probably lost in excess of $20m+ easily.

Glad everyone in the area is safe.

I lived in LA until 2020 and after going through the various stages of watching the news then checking in with all my friends out there, etc. Eventually I got to the "what if I hadn't moved?" part of the thought process.

Like others have said, the lives and homes are the things that matter most. But things like cards and collectables do have their place in the 'things that matter' power rankings. I know if I'm ever on the unfortunate end of a disaster, there will come a moment after all dust has settled when I say "crap, my superfractors are just... gone."

Probably less than what will be claimed on insurance policies when all is said and done. Hearing people were looting reminds me even in disasters the worst people will try and find a way to win.

Probably some. But as someone who knows multiple that lost their homes I doubt they are worried about their cards or other belongings right now. I just heard about someone I know who's house burned down and their kid's elementary school burned down. There are a lot of people who are not multimillionaire celebrities who's lives will never be the same. It's a mess and I'm sure it's far from over right now. I'm sure some pop counts will drop but I'd think people who have really rare or valuable cards took them when they evacuated.

True, if I have to make a choice between taking my cards or my family's photo albums from the past 30 years and other emotionally valuable nostalgia stuff Im taking the latter. Only so much people can fit into a car with their kids, pets, etc.

I hope you all stay safe and don't have to evacuate any more. It's got to be a horrible feeling leaving your home behind not knowing if it'll be there when you return!

I think this every time I see a disaster in the news. In the big picture none of this is important but...

Does anybody know if any card stores were in area?
