Herbert was flat out awful and was definitely battling demons, but this game showcased the extreme lack of talent the Chargers have on offense.

Aside from McConkey, what else do they have? Dissly played the worst game of his life, Josh Palmer was out, and QJ had 0 catches…

Herbert had no time to throw due to the worst IOL in the game. There’s no excuse for him throwing 4 Picks, but the Chargers outperformed expectations this year. Nobody had them going 11-6.

It’s only year 1 of Jim Harbaugh.

Yeah that throw made zero sense. He really never makes throws like that, so I don’t know why he would do something like that now.

It was a real head scratcher. Especially because it was to Johnston who is terrible at catching anything remotely contested.

People killed Dak and Lamar because they have had stacked teams and haven’t been able to get it done.

In reality, when has Herbert ever went into a season with the expectations of his team having Super Bowl aspirations? I can’t think of one year. He hasn’t had the pieces around him, which is why he may seem to get more of a pass.

No matter how good a QB is, you still need talent around them so that they can flourish. No way around it, he was awful yesterday, but a rookie 2nd round pick having 94% of their yardage is telling of the supreme lack of talent on offense.

2022 when a lot of folks said they were the favorites to win the AFC West.

They went 10-7 and got dumped out of the first round by Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars.

Also... the Chargers had the NFL's best defense. So I can't hear any excuses when Herbert had the leagues easier hurdle to leap.

Dallas hasn't had a stacked roster the last few years, not with that run defense. Dak was the main reason they had three consecutive 12 - 5 seasons. Ezekiel Elliott hasn't been the same for about four years, and what receiver did opposing defenses fear besides Lamb? Herbert, on the other hand, was the one so many people hate Tua for. These are first round picks, and neither (Herbert and Tua) has a playoff win. Dak was a fourth round pick and has normally masked the team's deficiencies until the 49ers come to town. Dak can't beat the 49ers in the playoffs.
Herbert can't beat anybody in the playoffs. At this point, with the high failure rate of first round quarterbacks, you may as well wait until the third, fourth, or later to draft your guy (it worked for Wilson and Brady). As for Jackson: there's nothing you can say about him. He's about to win a third MVP, and he won last night. That's a lot more than can be said about Herbert. But I'd like to see your Herbert cards, nonetheless. I'm not saying Herbert can't one day get over the hump. I don't even dislike him. But he's 0 - 3 in the playoffs; we need to always remember that. I'd rather have 2 - 4 playoff Dak than 0 - 3 playoff Herbert. But keep believing....

The Chargers were not good in 2022. Their defense was leagues worst.

Are the Cowboys and Ravens better than the Chargers, yes or no?

Since Dak has been in the league, he has had a much better team around him than Herbert.

You can’t compare QBs in a vacuum, you have to look at the pieces around them. Lamar is great, but in addition to him being great, he has a Derrick Henry, he’s had the #1 ranked offense for multiple years, he’s had good defenses.

This was the first year Herbert had a good defense, but it just so happened to be when the offense is the most depleted it has been since he has been in the league.

No matter how you spin it, Herbert has a "0" in the left column concerning wins and losses; that's a problem. And yes: Lamar and Dak are better than Herbert.
Herbert has nothing to stand on. Again: he's not garbage, but he's never gotten the hate Dak and Lamar have gotten. Dak was MVP runner up in 2023; Lamar is about to have 3 MVPs. 2 playoff wins for Dak. 3 playoff wins for Lamar. That's a lot more than 0. Will Herbert finally win 1 next year? Peyton Manning didn’t get a playoff win until his 6th season, Herbert will be fine. They were way ahead of schedule this year. They lost everything they had on offense over the off-season, let’s be realistic.

Nobody is talking about Burrow missing the playoffs when he has had Chase and and Higgins and whoever else on offense. The QB can’t do everything.

Also, hate comes from expectations. The Chargers have never had any expectations like the Cowboys or Ravens have.

I agree with the chargers being way ahead of schedule this year.

Look at their offensive weapons - butterfingers, Dissly, and two castaway running backs. Mcdonkey has been their only legitimate offensive threat the entire season.

It was a miracle the chargers made the playoffs at all. Give Herbie 2-3 more seasons to marinate.

Yes I understand that, but what I am trying to say is, a QB can’t earn that pass all on his own. Herbert would kill for a receiver like Chase and even Higgins (which could be a possibility this offseason).

Herbert has done nothing, I agree with you, but even the best QBs will look subpar with no weapons and no running game. Chargers will only get better, they basically did an entire overhaul this past offseason, these things take time.

I mean look at that list. He leads those guys in Yards, completion percentage, INT ratio, and more.

Herbert is going to have 10+ more years of quality football, his story is far from finished.

Aside from McConkey, what else do they have? Dissly played the worst game of his life, Josh Palmer was out, and QJ had 0 catches…

Quentin Johnston feels/plays like Temu Mike Williams.

Also... the Chargers had the NFL's best defense.

Statistically, yes, but those numbers were built upon slapping around flaming sacks of dog crap offenses all season long.

McConkey looks like he's going to be their Cooper Kupp or Puka Nacua. Dude is going to get 15 targets a game for good reason.

Yesterday wasn't a great day for Herbert, but he's still pretty young. Arguably the top 4 names at QB are in the AFC, so he doesn't get a ton of attention nationally yet.

I don't put all the blame on Herbert, only 2 picks were that bad and the whole offense is incompetent.

The front office pushed Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Austin Ekeler out the door because they were "old" and "washed" and didn't want to pay them even market value.

Going younger isn't always a good thing. I'm not sure why teams are obsessed with it, and the proof is in the pudding.

They knew they were not competing for a title this year. Going younger was the right thing to do given their circumstances.

There's only 4-5 teams each year who realistically have a chance to compete for a title. What young and explosive playmakers are going to mature next year to get Herbie and co over the hump?

Because they gave the franchise player an extension, they figure they didn’t have to pay a premium for production, younger guys can probably match just by law of analytics.

Herbert had one guy do just that this past year - now the Chargers need at least two more to develop fast.

That is true, but Herbert is still going to take the blame because he is the QB making big money that hasnt done anything yet.

Herbert had a hell of a season, all things considered, but when teams really lock in during the playoffs, there is just nothing you can do when you are that outmatched.

Hobby wise he should definitely take a hit. Could be a good opportunity to buy if people really do sell off.

I have a feeling most people holding Herbert weren't expecting some sort of deep playoff run this year though.

Yeah... the downside with operating in Harbaugh's offense is that I don't know if he's ever going to air out again like did with Staley.

His path to being a hobby star might be Super Bowls... which is a tough thing to do.

He's no bum. Just a terrible playoff game where he threw more picks than the previous 17 games combined. Cards will likely take a dip, especially lower end stuff that will tilt toward 50 cent and dollar boxes. Ample room for a bump down the road. Worst case scenario is probably Derek Carr who was good but couldn't bring home the trophy.

That seems harsh, but if we agree he's a bum, his rookie cards still sell and it's not Gary V buying them all.

The Herbert dilemma is there's going to be a lot of traffic winning the AFC title with Burrow, Allen, Mahomes, Jackson plus the up and commers. He could be the forgotten one from that crowd. The NFL can change quickly however and I'm a buyer if they're in a bargain bin.

Herbert is not a bum, but he sure gets the least criticism of all the quarterbacks. I've said it time and again: he looks good losing. Sunday, he looked bad losing. Nobody talks about the talent other quarterbacks lack, just Herbert and Allen for the most part. Then, when they play well for half a season, they're headed for GOAT status.

I started nibbling on Herbert as soon as Harbough was hired. THey will be fine. Their offense is literally a qb, two OT's and a slot receiver. They need 2 more drafts to build up this team.

That's why McVay deserves a TON of credit. He knew he had a choker like Goff and pulled the trigger on another guy. Stafford is more talented than Goff and McVay knew he needed a fresh start to see if he could win with him instead of continuing with somebody he knows wasn't going to work out.

Not really the same situation though. I think at the time of the trade, Goff was a considered maybe like a top 15-20 QB? It was easy to see that Stafford was way better than Goff.

Herbert is considered a top 10, maybe even a top 5 QB by some just based on talent. You put Stafford behind that Chargers O-Line and he isn't throwing 40+ TDs this year.

That's true but they did go to a Super Bowl with Goff and he is younger than Stafford. You rarely see those kinds of trades in the NFL.

I don't think it would have mattered much if Herbert didn't have key injuries to his line, healthy line or not healthy line, I have seen enough of him to see that he's just not the guy who's going to step up in the playoffs. Harbaugh can't save him.

Matthew Stafford is a goo point of reference here for Herbert fans.
Look how long Stafford lamented in Detroit, and eventually got a SB after switching teams (and conferences). It may take a new city for Herbert if the front office doesn’t give him more weapons.

can't even really fault herbert for this. Harbaugh might be a great defensive coach but he has no offense. Literally. I watched a lot of charger games this year where the score was 6-3 at halftime or something similar.

That game was a lot on herbs, missed a lot of throws, however the offense in general, mainly because of the OL and play calling, was just stale.

They have the defense. Need the interior OL to be fixed this offseason. Dude is a gamer QB, three playoff games isn’t changing that for me, not everyone is mahomes or Allen.

Guy played professional football with a broken hand while most of his criticizers would call out sick to work over sniffles.

He didn’t play good last night. Dude is still a great QB.

For the life of me I cannot figure out why they didn’t run more slant plays for the receivers. Whenever you have no time to throw, RUN the slant!!! Pick up 4yrds and repeat. The defense has to adjust and drop that 5th man they were rushing to the middle of the field
