2024 topps gilded collection gold storm

I initially thought this was a parallel set to the base set but just realized it is an actual insert set! With only one parallel, the superfractor, these are a challenge to find as they are limited to 24.

I got lucky and was fortunate to pull one.

Anyone else like these or going for a set potentially?!??

It’ll be a tough one. Only 3 Julios have surfaced so far that I know of.

Man, congrats on pulling so many!

They are usually one every 24 boxes, so you destroyed the odds.

In this vast sea of modern day inserts, this one really floats to the top. I completely agree with the potential of this one.

I haven’t seen any at my local shows. I think most people have probably pulled them via breaks.

I’ve noticed all the vladdys are off-centered on the back.

I haven't followed the product much so I don't know about the cost/resale value but, regardless, that's a lot of nice hits (especially those Chrome autos, you hit a lot of good names)!!

For now going to keep it all--I toploaded all of it and have it nicely put away in a single row box. I really like Gilded, and with base cards/99, I think the gilded cards are all good holds, especially with this rookie class.

I have 2 additional sealed cases--with the Topps redemptions now not expiring for 10 years (2034), the Skenes redemption thing is not an issue..I plan to hold the cases at least 5 years and see how the rookie class performs..

Gilded is a nice product. Although I no longer own any singles of it anymore, it's still a card to include in one's PC for those chasing base (and parallel) rookie cards.

Haha yeah, sealed wax plays are a lot less risky (and more fun) with the 10-year expiration date. Best of luck on the sealed play too!

Yeah I saw the auction/BIN at $800, checking ebay saved search emails in the morning, and thought it was interesting. Went back later to pull it up, and it had sold. In hindsight I should have jumped on the BIN asap.

Golden Storm is a pretty sweet place to start. I some have the bankroll for that, but I’ve also become a big fan of Bowman’s Best Strokes of Gold set. Those are a little more affordable.

I’ve noticed many cards are surprisingly condition-sensitive, particularly for chrome cards.

They only made 24 base of each so Topps probably didn’t care too much about QC for this run of limited inserts.

I’ve seen some with dinged corners and there is an acuna up that appears to have a creased back.

Do you try to attack the more expensive guys first in case you decide to abandon ship later or buy shortly after product release so singles don’t completely dry up?

Some of these are getting harder to track down as breaks are getting much fewer and far apart.

Hopefully as the season starts more will surface.

I've got two, a Betts and a Holliday. Actually, I just have the Betts. We were in the middle of moving when I got the Holliday. Six weeks later and I've yet to unearth it from wherever I put it. Hopefully it did not go out with a bunch of broken down moving boxes. So there might only be 23 of those.

Yes, it would have been nice had they included Bobby instead of Heston Kjerstad, for example.

The most condition sensitive cards I've noticed so far have been Pete Crow-Armstrong, Jackson Holliday and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. With the limited number of sheets used to print these cards, Topps probably just blew off QC on these. Certain players possibly in the middle of the sheets have many nice copies available, however. Many of the surface defects can be masked by the gold storm effect, so not sure how those will be graded.

About 25% of the entire print run has surfaced on auction sites thus far, three months after release.

Also, about 17% of the entire print run has been slabbed so far.

Sealed cases have nearly disappeared and are over $7k when you can find them.

It didn't take the breakers long to shred through a huge portion of the 2500 total cases produced, which means many of these inserts have been released into circulation.

All in all, I guesstimate that around 70% of this product has already been cracked.

I wouldn’t be surprised if people are just holding onto the ones they have (like I am). They’re beautiful cards and low-numbered so maybe a pretty decent play if you have the right players.

With the prices they fetch compared to other similar cards such as /25 topps chrome parallels of the exact same players, you’d figure most people would be in the market to flip these quickly.

I guess they just seem a lot more unique than being just another color parallel, and perhaps their inclusion in such an expensive product matters a lot? I think the fact that the inserts are from the highest end chrome product certainly helps and the lack of parallels besides the super is what drew me to them. Plus, this is the very first time gilded has ever had a non-paralleled to death insert.

It’s interesting to compare them to the hidden gems - one is serial numbered and the other isn’t. One comes from the highest end product and the other is scattered throughout low end products.

I’ve been collecting for decades, it took me fifteen years in the interim to actually pick a specific set that I thought worthy of pursuing out of the thousands that have been released.

I fund my collection the old fashioned way, by spending what I earn with my real job.

I don’t mask myself as being a collector and try to justify hoarding infant formula, toilet paper and sealed boxes and flipping them as the only means to fund my hobby, like others here.

Depends on the player. I would say they’ve slightly softened for most players, except Witt and Chourio who has seen a slight increase. Elly is holding steady. Sellers who are holding out for big money for Jasson and Caminero are having to come down a bit.

They look great in some photos, but they are kind of disappointing in hand. Kind of flat.
I've got two, a Betts and a Holliday. Actually, I just have the Betts. We were in the middle of moving when I got the Holliday. Six weeks later and I've yet to unearth it from wherever I put it. Hopefully it did not go out with a bunch of broken down moving boxes. So there might only be 23 of those.

A Holliday just sold for $600 on a best offer - that's the highest sale i've seen so far for that card.

I appreciate the encouraging words - I’m well on my way but as they say, the last steps are the hardest part. I’ve been patient and I enjoy the pursuit.

This product is not being broken any more and singles are really drying up or folks are waiting for the regular season to list.

The interesting part will be to see which rookie logo cards go up and which go down the drain. I’ll try to update my “price guide” monthly so those who are interested can follow like in the old days with their Beckett, lol.

It definitely appears to be drying up. I think a lot of the breaker wins have been sent to PSA and they are finally reaching the market, or folks are just going to sit on them until a player gets hot during the season.

On any given week over the last three months, there would usually be at least 5 active auctions running. At my last glance, there was only one active auction and what’s left is a couple of really insane BIN auction like a Soto for $2000, when they’ve been selling for $200.

I’ve pretty much hit a wall until the season starts I believe. I can tell more than one person is going for this set, lol.

My “price guide” shows that the raws were selling for about 450-650. Either that was an overpay or the cards are gathering more demand.

I’ll try to update my price guide on the 20th of each month for those that are interested in following trends throughout the season.

It’s just been fun monitoring the sales, though I would prefer they stay lower for my wallet’s sake and for some bargaining leverage!

A raw Trout, which was less than mint, sold for $560 recently whereas the last PSA 10 went for $675.

Will certainly do! PCA is looking great this spring.

I thought I was well on my way, but recent activity will likely delay it for a little bit. I think I just need to ride out the preseason hype, I hope.

It’s crazy because there were around 15-20 cards to follow on eBay a month ago, but many cards that were listed for months are getting snagged regardless of condition.

I’m glad I snatched some of the biggies early on - again a good lesson to follow for those attacking limited sets!

I was definitely looking for a more challenging modern insert set to put together, and this one met all the criteria I was looking for. I’ve only seen one copy of any card in this set in the wild since this product has been released and I’ve come to realize that even though it’s a contemporary set, the singles are as difficult to locate as some 90’s insert sets.

The vast majority of first owners of these cards are guys who acquired them from breaks. There are only a handful of people who open gilded for their personal enjoyment. The good thing is that breaker johns are very motivated to sell their wins as they badly need to recoupe their money - no one wants to keep a generica insert out of gilded, right? They are only looking for superfractor and autos, and I’d gladly take these inserts off their hands so they can try again in other breaks.

I didn’t want to go after a set with too many commons - I’d be stuck with a whole bunch of cards I wouldn’t want if I decided to quit. No issues like that in this set, as it is well-balanced with rookie logos and future hofs.

The serial numbering was also important. There are only a total of 600 base singles in this set - that’s just 100 more than the total number of 2001 chrome pujols rookies that exist - just 12 gilded gold storms per state, on average. So yes, they are not common to see. I don’t like any of the other case hit type of insert options (even though some look really nice) out there because they lack that serial numbering.

These inserts are rare enough that even the superfractor parallels have less significance to me - there are so many supers that exist for these players out there, more than 24 for most of the players, that the base singles/24 are the highlight here.

The perfect features for a hobby challenge worth pursuing - completing this set. I also didn’t initially realize how condition sensitive this set was, especially for it being chrome based. High grades will be a challenge as well.

The only setback is the player selection choice of the vets - Bobby was a big omission, but for the most part, they got it right.

I'd been out of collecting since my childhood and when we started again I looked at targeting short print run insert sets of 25 cards or so, that way we could have multiple sets of cards in a single binder. We finished the Bowman Chrome Garbage Pail Kids set, and just finished this years All Aces. I like this set more than those because it was numbered, I thought that'd be more of a challenge. It ended up being very challenging!

I saw hermanotarjeta's post when it was posted, but didn't actually decide to try and tackle this set for a month. If I had jumped on it right away, I might have made it further along. You even posted some of my purchases as I was over paying at the time. Prices recently have really jumped up though and I don't think I'm willing to chase them to finish the set. The Jasson Dominguez selling for over $700 really shocked me. I considered offering $1500 for one of the Skenes but the guy seems firm, and I'm not even sure I'd want to pay $1500 for it. So, I'm pausing, and I'm going to look for a different set to start pursuing in the mean time. We are currently at 13 cards.

Even though the set is only 25 cards, I always pictured it as a potentially multi-year project. It’s a lot more challenging than it appears. Sealed cases for sale are essentially non-existent and thus breaks have all but disappeared. Some singles haven’t surfaced for months, which is unheard of for a product that was released less than 5 months ago - insane!

From my perspective, over time, some of those rookie logo cards will drop quite a bit as the players’ potential disappear, so it’s probably wiser to demonstrate patience with those rookie logo cards, including Skenes.

The Skenes sellers are in no hurry to sell, that’s for sure. The crazy Soto for $2000 bin/bo seller is never gonna move that card either.

Best of luck on your pursuit as well, the wonderful thing about this hobby is that you can always get back to completing those sets at any time, even after decades out of the hobby as they will always be there, albeit perhaps at a higher price, lol.

One thing for sure - what keeps us set collectors going is the passion for the chase - and this set just begs us to do that!

Btw, the Guerrero card is my favorite along with the Soto. Those two cards I think really showcase the "gold storm" aspect; much better than cards such as the Holliday or Trout ones where they're just in their batting stance.

I like the Elly and the Bryce myself, though the batting stance poses, like the Acuna, don’t bother me so much.

They are all beautiful, however, in their own right- simply a visually pleasant set!

It’s getting to the point that any particular player may show up once every 2-3 months now.

That may turn into years over the next decade.

If anyone out there is looking for a challenge, you’ve found the right set. Each rung on the ladder gets more and more difficult the further out we go, but it’s not too late!

The estimated cost to completing a set when I first started was about $12k. Now it’s about $16k.

The Mookie Betts Super sold at a good price the other day, I'm sad I missed it.

It initially went unsold at $1k. Then rerun and closed around $800 on a best offer.

Pretty good price considering the /24 base card goes for around $250-$300.

Yeah I saw the auction/BIN at $800, checking ebay saved search emails in the morning, and thought it was interesting. Went back later to pull it up, and it had sold. In hindsight I should have jumped on the BIN asap.

Just looked again, this Mookie Super did $3800 two weeks ago. I screwed up.

Starting to see some movement with Skenes. Two PSA 9 sales this weekend at $1500 and $1600, which is 50% up from the off season.

Also the superfractor has been listed for auction again, will be interested to see where that lands as it initially sold for $8500 shortly after product release.

To answer your question, yes.

The funny thing is PCA was never a cheap card to begin with. Even before the season started, copies were selling for $350-$400, which I think was a bit high. He’s certainly met up to those expectations, and now he is selling more in the $450-$500 range for copies in better condition.

Potential buyers should be aware that this is a condition-sensitive card. I know, it’s strange that a chrome set could be condition sensitive, but the PSA pop report reveals only four cards graded, all 8’s. I believe every other card in the set has a card graded 9 or higher, so keep that in mind if you are hunting for a mint copy - they will be tough to locate, if they even exist at all.

Have you been able to find a Chourio yet?

The great thing I’ve noticed about collecting a modern set is that there is always a hot player in your set to boost your morale during the season. You don’t experience the emotional lows of specific player collecting when your player is in a slump or injured.

Set collecting is almost like a mutual fund - there will always be high performing players to balance the cold players out.

It's been 6 months since the product was released and singles sales for the most part are still strong. One player's cards have softened abit, which is not a surprise, however much the hobby may be cheering for him to return to form. Lower condition copies of singles in the set are still selling well, which I feel is a better gauge of temperature than the highest prices of the highest graded copies. For the layman collector, a card out of 25 is a card out of 25 - most folks are still blinded by the artificial scarcity and the companies know that. Why pay a 10x premium for a card when you can find something similar numbered to the same thing?

On the contrary, if you don’t know that a card exists, of course there will be no mass interest in it. Very few collectors have actually pulled these cards by themselves - the vast majority were acquired via breaks by folks who are only interested in reselling for their next break. You never see these at shows, there is no publicity for these cards because no one has ever seen them in person. That may be the reason why the masses aren’t buying it, just specialty collectors. I get the feeling that multiple set collectors are going after this set, and perhaps that is setting the market prices, albeit in a vacuum.

Most collectors simply don’t know it exists.

Good point, but for that specific card, it will be the second time they have run it in the last month, probably due to non-paying bidder or condition issues.

Never been a set collector really. More a player and Rookie collector. Would it be better for the set if it was a one year and done set or if they did the set every year? Seems like if you know the set exists and a player collector you would have to have one of these of your guy. Also seems it would catch on more if done every year.

No matter what Topps decides for this product/set in the future, what the 2024 edition has going for it is that it is the first set they have ever done - that will never change.

I’m not sure how player collectors view inserts and how they decide what cards to pursue. In this day and age of plentiful releases, it seems like a daunting task to even think about. Many times, if you blink once, your opportunity to acquire a specific card at an affordable price is gone.

Langford psa 9 just ended at $725 plus shipping. Couple hundred less than the last one sold but couple hundred more than I paid for mine so still looking good. He’s in a bad slump, but hitting the ball hard every game! he will turn it around.

I thought we had hit a listing lull in mid April due to a lack of sellers, but many folks got their PSA graded cards back and mix in the early part of the season and cards started surfacing again and that action lasted a few months.

Now the PSA pop report growth has essentially slowed to a crawl and we have zero live auctions again for the first time in two months - perhaps another sign the circulating population is getting scarce. Seeing the big jump in PCA with no copycat listing tells me we will start to see a lot less action on these, which may mean higher prices for the few that show up.

The set is still less than seven months old and about 85% of sealed has been cracked around the world.

How are you estimating how much has been opened?

Based on what’s been graded by public pop report data of PSA, SGC, and BGS, and my own following of this set since it came out.

The highest PSA pop report card is now Skenes at 13, and I know of four other copies that have not been graded yet, add in another 10-15% for those cards that have been pulled but not publically known to have surfaced and another 10-15% left in wax, and the availability of sealed product out there and you can get a decent estimate for a product of only 2500 sealed case production that was massively torn apart by breakers.

Not hardcore science-based, but just my own observational estimate as I have followed these cards with great interest.

Congrats on the buy. Truly a nice card. But just cause you paid doesn't mean there weren't shenanigans. MIGHT just mean the person doing the shenanigans got what they wanted.

It’s getting more common to have no current active auctions, now seven months after product release.

I’ve counted at least 18 of the 25 superfractors have surfaced, that’s a pretty high percentage opening of a product.

I was the the other bidder. I always bid in $5-$10 increments, mainly cause it's a simple button on the app. I also like the ping when I get outbid, so I can consider if I want to go further. I bid on hundreds of things a month in a similar way, so sorry to make alarm bells go off.

I extended $100 beyond where I wanted to be, but would have happily added it to the collection.

Missed out on the Tatis too, but frankly, I hate Tatis, so didnt fish too hard

It appears either Judge or Crow-Armstrong may be the next cards to break the 4-digit barrier raw if either stays hot, behind Ohtani and Skenes.

As mentioned before, Bobby would have been a better selection to replace Tatis in the set, but I also understand why Topps chose him. He is an exciting but tarnished player.

Every set collector has to make these compromises however, lol.
