View Full Version : Reminder - Kris Bryant still plays in the MLB

Especially as a Cubs fan - it’s bewildering thinking that he’s still an active player and is still only 33 years old. Injury history (lack of played games) and signing with the Rockies have practically nailed his coffin. Has anyone else quite had a story like this? Hyped prospect - ROY - MVP - World Series - one of the faces of the game to “oh I remember him” and then realizing he’s not even retired?

KB was good for five years and then fell off a cliff
hes a great cautionary tale for "investors" indeed

As a Rockies fan, it is still easy to forgot, given the numbr of games he's missed.

The first 2 that popped into head my head as comps were Kirby and Donnie Baseball, however they both realized they were finished and retired before they really embarrassed themselves. I don’t really have a problem with a star that spends his last few years being league average, because I assume they still have something to offer the younger players. If you’re not available for most of the season and stink when you are playing it might be time to call it.

Sounds a lot like Cody Bellinger unless he's somehow able to right this sinking ship back up.

Johan Santana was the greatest pitcher in baseball for a good stretch.

Faded very quickly imo.

You wanna really blow your mind? As I type this STARLIN CASTRO is not 35 years old yet. That blows my mind every time I think about it.

That’s actually insane. Seems like a guy that could be 39 years old.

Worst thing about Bryant is that people still think he commands 2016 prices. Pain in the neck trying to wrestle certain cards of him away from sellers for what he's truly worth.

I confess: I went all in on Kris Bryant during his MVP season. After the Cubs won it all, I thought he had what it took to be the new face of the MLB (power, MVP, championship, looks, etc). I certainly did not think he would drop off the face of the earth this quickly. I’m glad I sold my Kris Bryant collection when he still had semi-value while his cards were trending down.

Oddly enough I just bought two KB 1/1's from his Cub days. Wanted some rare cards to commemorate the good old days. They're very affordable now.

That said. I have no intentions on buying any more of his cards. The plan was just to get one. But two that I like popped up within the span of a week and I said "what the hey?"

I enjoyed watching him on the Giants in 2021. Saw him hit a dinger against the A's that season. He had a good series against the Dodgers in the LDS, going 8 for 17 with a homer and a walk.

What? He retired due to an eye disease. In what world were his last few years "finished". He was a two time AS, SS, got MVP votes, batted over .300, Slugging% over .500, and averaged over 100 RBI and 150 Hits......
his WAR was over 3 also.

But yeah, Cubs Ring of Honor/Cubs Hall of Fame for Kris Bryant 100%

A lot of people don't realize that the reason Bryant fell off a cliff was due to being hit in the head by a pitch. He hasn't been the same since. That has a way of affecting a person both physically and mentally.

As a Giants fan, I nominate Tim Lincecum.

He was absolutely dominant through his age-27 season, having won a pair of Cy Youngs and led the league in K’s three straight years. But then in his next five seasons, he had a cumulative 4.94 ERA before retiring at 32.

He was a part of all three World Series titles, but he was only a great player for the first one.

KB's championship teammate, Javy, says hello.

I can't imagine Baez rehabbing from surgery will improve his chances this season. Plus, the Tigers stocked up on infielders, so he could be out a roster spot soon.

He didn't shine as bright for as long as KB but his peak was close. MVP runner-up in 2018. Plenty of hype as a prospect and even through his mediocre years after his 2014 debut. The 2016 NLCS was his coming out party.

That said, I'm still open to any deals on nice Javier Baez cards...ha.

Just before the pandemic, I thought he had an excellent chance of reaching 3,000 hits. In the summer of 2019 I stocked up on a dozen of so nice rookes and autos. Oh well...

I took a line drive off my face pitching when I was nineteen. Broke my jaw. Worst pain I've ever felt in my life. Yet, I'd break my jaw 20 more times before I broke my foot once more. But that's a discussion for another time.

Anyway. More than 20 years later and I can't even pitch in 12" softball. I can pitch 16" because the ball is softer and moves a little slower.

But I just cannot get past the mental wall of that ball slamming off my face. I can still see it in slow motion right now as I type this more than twenty years later.

That said. I've always wondered had I been a pro-level pitcher what I would have done to get past it so I could continue my career and make that money. I wasn't a pro-level pitcher, so it was easy to move on.

But it is a tough mental hurdle to get past if you don't have millions of dollars as the carrot on the stick.

Kris Bryant was my main PC and was the guy that got me back into collecting. He was the only guy where I went out of my way to watch to watch minor league baseball highlights on youtube. I had a bunch of colored Bowman chrome autos from 2013 and 2015 which I thought I would never sell. Then Covid happened and a big KB collector from overseas contacted me about buying some of my cards. When he said what he was willing to pay for them I had no choice but to sell. I still have a lot of his cards and still occasionally sell to fellow collectors when they're interested in a few of his cards. He will always be my favorite player.

On a side note this is why people say don't invest in cards. For every gold mine there are a million rotten eggs.

Even the so-called gold mines have their ups-and-downs. Remember how Ohtani fell out of favor in the hobby before his breakout season in 2021?

There is no perfect player. Griffey became injury prone and pudgy in his 30s. Bonds and Arod had steroid scandals. Jeter was criticized for having terrible range at SS. Pujols was mostly bad with the Angels. And of course, Trout has been injury-prone for several years now.

Shoeless Joe.

Cards issued during his career are all $$. The scandal didn’t impact that - even with the lack of actual proof

Dwight Gooden comes to mind. 1984 ROY, 1985 Cy Young, 1986 WS Champ and his career went downhill from there. In 2000 he was still hanging around. He played for three teams that season, Yankees, Astros and Rays.

Think about it. In 2014 you could’ve correctly predicted KB would win ROY, MVP, a World Series with the Cubs(!!!!) and you’d still lose money on his Chrome autos ten years down the road. It’s absolutely bonkers.

He pitched 2 seasons for the Indians, so of course he would have cards. He even has a card with the Astros even though he only pitched one game for them. No cards for the Rays though. He started 2000 with the Astros, then pitched 8 games for the Rays then finished the season with the Yankees and his Topps Traded cards are with the Yankees.

So... what happened to him? Is it something, like, he wasn't able to heal properly in the higher altitude of Coors Field (I think Tulowitzki complained about that). Or was he already cooked when he signed that contract?

It's so unfortunate.

I said when he was dealt from the Cubs how unfortunate the entire situation was - it seemed wrong that the Face of a Franchise, a guy who would never have to buy a drink in Chicago again, got shipped off. I know it was a business decision. History shows us that it was the correct business decision. But it still leaves a sour taste in my mouth as a baseball fan.

His numbers had been declining for years prior to signing with the Rockies. He was never as good as people thought he was. He didn't have the raw power that he was hyped-up to have before he debuted.
