Anyone know why Charles Barkley's GU/Patches are rare?
Did those game-worn jerseys just happened to be stashed away by some entities/individuals?

Very few were produced, and most of them are short-printed :)!

Yes, but why?

yes exactly
i know that very few are produced... as a memorabilia / cards
but isn't it supposed to be about the same number of jerseys available as any other players?

That's why i though some individuals/entities are stashing those jerseys away..

He retired in 2000, before GU/Patch cards became (too) common, and he hasn't agreed to have his pics on cards since then (apart from a deal that he had presumably signed with Fleer/Skybox just before they filed for bankruptcy in 2005).

But I don't think a 1997-98 UD Game Jersey of Barkley is more rare than the same card from another player...

Yeah, he owns his own IP, and anyone wanting to use his picture or likeness must go to him for permission. Pannini has been trying to but negotiations are not going well. He's probably asking too much.

Famous Fabrics can produce his cards (as well as Jordan) because they do not use their likeness, just their name. If they placed a picture of the player on the card, they'd instantly be sued.

i see...
i guess the game-worn jerseys itself are available, it's just Panini/UD hasn't been able to make a deal with him
maybe one day Barkley would make a deal, and it'll flood the market, eh?

Isn't this great? Let's say things never change. Guess who's memorabilia cards are going to go way up in value in the future?

:) :flex: :)

Barkley is a stickler on the production of anything that has him in there. He will not sign. He will not do any contracts whereby someone can make money off his autograph/GU. He is just that way. The same went for his attribution to being a role model. He didnt want kids to idolize him nor consider himself a role model. He was just this way.

That coupled with the fact that Barkley stuff is not rare, but rather limited in the varying number of sets he is in out there. Round Mound is right that there isnt any less of his cards out of a subset but rather just less insert/GU/subsets that he is not in because he doesnt have any AU/GU.

Exactly: you don't see a 97-98 UD Game Jersey for sale very often, whether it's Barkley or Glenn Robinson. Same goes for the 99-00 UD Game Jersey, Game Patch, Black Diamond Piece of History etc

Pretty much all the jersey/patch sets in which Barkley was included extremely hard, if not impossible to pull in a whole case!

You see other players memorabilia a lot more often because the David Robinsons, Ewings, Birds, Magics, Rodmans, all were included in post-2000 collection with jersey and patch cards pretty much in every pack.
