View Full Version : Won a PC card (2009-10 Classics Stephen Curry RC Auto) and seller immediately cancels

I placed the sole bid on a 2009-10 Panini Classics Stephen Curry RC Auto /499 BGS 8.5 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/227124361487) auction listing via eBay and won but the seller (SMR Collectibles) immediately cancelled the order.

Pretty frustrating experience as I had been watching the card for the past week and ultimately just wasted my time. It was meant for the PC too. I actually watched its prior auction listings go unsold multiple times (each time, the seller knocked off $500 and relisted the auctions; this time, only knocked off $200 from the most-recent auction listing that ended).

The seller sent me a message saying that it was cancelled because the card was no longer available (unsure if it's true or if they feel that they undersold it despite it not selling the past times and I was the only bid for this auction).

Anyway, if you're targeting any basketball PC cards, be sure to save yourself some headache and block this seller: SMR Collectibles

SMR collectibles....they were at the Philly card show this past weekend and I swear I saw that exact card. Very possible they sold it at the show but weren't able to take down the eBay listing. Either way, that sucks man. But likely not a nefarious cancelled sale.

Respectfully, I don't buy this. Takes 5 seconds to end an eBay auction early. Only reason not to end it early is so they didn't have to pay the early cancellation fee. OP gets the raw end of the stick with this outcome.

I bought a card at a show once and the dealer didn’t remove the eBay listing for three days. It happens all the time.

I also paid over the going price for a card on eBay on a buy it now and the seller told me it sold at the shop but they immediately refunded my money. They said they forgot to remove the listing.

Unfortunately that happens on occasion as well.

The lesson I learned - you never actually purchased the card until it is actually in you possession. E-commerce is not perfect.

Yeah, it's still not a great look for the seller, but I don't think it was a cancelled sale because the seller didn't like the auction result type deal. Now that I think harder, I 100% saw that card in the dealer's display because I specifically remember the 8.5/10 grade. IIRC the card was priced at $4.5k. He must have sold it in the last couple hours of the show, because I saw the card around 1PM yesterday and the show ended at 3.

Yeah, not defending the seller at all. Best case scenario for them, they were simply lazy or forgot to cancel the auction. Even if that's the case, that doesn't excuse them for leaving the auction up and probably deserve a negative feedback.

I have no dog in this race I’m just saying it’s easy to not be thinking about your eBay listings when you’re at a show or move something offline.

It’s a plausible scenario.

Yeah, based on their feedback, it's something they commonly do. Pretty lame.

Pretty much my thoughts. There were no bids until my "snipe" bid.

If they truly sold it before the auction ended, should've just checked their listings and cancelled the listing (no early cancellation fee for a 0-bid listing, right?).

I just don't understand the logic of bringing cards to shows that you've actively listed as auctions (I mean, I know they prefer in-person sales as they'll net more for various reasons). But to me, it just displays a lack of business integrity (prioritizing making more vs. honoring sales). I'm sure they've cancelled other auctions with multiple bids (bids that were placed well before they sold whatever cards).

They clearly lack organization (and probably don't care) but there needs to be some accountable. This isn't a one-time scenario, they've done it multiple times (per input above and eBay feedback details).

I mean I agree with you mostly but you and I both know eBay will never do anything about it

What should happen in this scenario? If they sold the card offline they can’t honor the sale, so best case is a refund.

Haha, at this point, it's probably mostly venting.

But for excessive repeat offenders, eBay should (but won't) temporarily suspend such accounts.

Also, SMR collectibles should stop bringing cards that they've listed as auctions to card shows (or end the auction listings [only if they can, such as 0 bids] before making available in their showcase). It's really not that hard to do. If the card doesn't sell at the show, they can re-list the auction, etc.

The way they worded their message to you, "cancellation per your request"
and cancel reason "customer requested" are common with sellers flaking to protect themselves from negative feedback.

Did they relist the card? Give them a call and ask them, they have a phone number. https://www.smrcollectibles.com/

Oh man, I was so heated that I missed that little detail. Given that I never made such a request, I'm even more annoyed.

Hopefully, they don't relist it as it would at least validate the justification (no longer being available) they gave for reason why they cancelled the order. Only time will tell.

No point in calling them, nothing will change.

I would guess that 90% of the high-end cards you see at a show are currently listed on eBay. It's very common. Generally, when I have bought a card that was listed, the seller will advise me that he has quickly gone on eBay and ended the listing. I do not see a problem if handled this way.

What I find really funny however, is when a seller tries to use his own card listed on eBay as a comp.

What is the official reason (as shown on eBay) that the auction was canceled? Are they using the "buyer asked to cancel option" to circumvent account defects?

100%. No issues if it were a BINBO but it was a 7-day (max) auction. Basically, it shows that they don't intend to honor auction sales if they don't have to.

Seeing that SMR had my feedback removed AND they continue to engage in such practice (another feedback about order cancellation since mine) tells me that eBay doesn't care.

eBay probably willing to ignore the issue because of all the money they get from SMR's sales (via fees).

But it's definitely shady that they could have such feedback removed.
