I mean those are nice but Id rather have a regular card of them #ed low. How do we know those jerseys and bats are even ones they actually used? I know you can say the same for an autograph but at least it looks good. I dont know, again Im sorry but its just my opinion. I do not like game used cards at all.

If you collect game-used memorabilia cards of older players, I think you may find that they are more rare than their autographs.
Vintage game-used jerseys aren't as plentiful as modern day stuff. Once a player retires for good, there won't be any more game-used memorabilia from him. However, he can go on signing for years on end.

so you want those who collect game used to stop collecting them and start collecting autographs. then the price of autographs will go up....smart.
I don't care for game used but I do like autograph patch cards and jumbo patch cards.

I like jerseys about 83x as much as GU bat pieces, because they are indistinguishable... at least jersey pieces have a chance to look team-specific

I guess it depends on how you look at it.... At least a relic card has had some contact with the actual person, well sometimes, and thats neat in a way. On card autos are cool, because the player/person actually handled the card, but sticker autos personally I think are a waste.

Well youre right about sticker autos, I think theyre pointless. Although, the fact that "someone handled the card" doesnt make autos any more special for me, I mean that sounds a little extreme. I just like the collection of autos and the look of them, I dont chase an auto card because HE TOUCHED THE CARD

LMAO I dont care if the competition for autos causes higher prices. I dont just buy autos blindy, if I want a card bad enough Ill have to outbid someone or thats that. Im not gonna cry. Id rather work towards building base sets or parallel sets than collecting GU cards.

They are sweet looking cards. I love the coloring but what if instead of the GU they had some kind of sweet refractor type pic of an amazing catch, homerun, etc. of that player. I just want the hobby to get more interesting and not keep producing the same crap over and over.

Good topic. Really, is a plain white jersey card all that special anymore? More effort might be put into cards if manufacturers didn't fall back on the old reliable plain color jersey hit.
I will say that I think low-numbered parallel cards, except for, say, those #d 50 or less, are even less special than an auto or jersey. For example, a green tint Heritage parallel is not all the interesting to me in the least bit.
And when you really think about it, cards are just cardboard. Wouldn't it mean much more to have an actual game used jersey of a player? A glove? Photo of them with yourself?
Man, I'm starting to think groupies have it better than collectors.

Game used relics for current players are a bit drab. How many Ryan Howard jersey and bat pieces will be made before he retires?
However, I think GU of retired and deceased players are awesome relics to have. Look at how many Christians cherish relic pieces that were supposedly worn by saints or biblical figures. Imagine if they did an Abraham Lincoln relic card with a piece of jacket he wore in office. I think relics would be great pulls if they limited them to retired players and historical figures only. I pulled Ruth and Gehrig out of Gypsy Queen this year and both of those are sitting in frames on my book case. I'm sure some people will think it's pretty neat to have those pieces on display. So I'm 50/50 on the topic.
With so many worthless event-used jersey cards being put out, actual game-used stuff should have more of a premium.
As for the bats, it would be nice if they only used the outside layer for cards, so you have a chance to see some nice game use. Maybe save the inside for worthless retail box hits (as most buying retail are happy to get anything - don't need to use up the good stuff).

I agree with the plain white or grey jersey's too.. all is lost on these now.
Its not any more special especially when you take into account that you don't even know for a fact that the jersey in your card IS an actual game-used jersey of your favorite player! For all you know - its just some some old jersey from goodwill they purchased 10 years ago from a little leaguer lol!!

I don't like GU either. Jersey cards have been way over done and bat cards are just plain pointless, even if it's a Babe Ruth bat card. It's a shame that GU are your "hits" in an $80 a box product, but that's how the hobby is now.

I like getting game used stuff in packs, but I will agree that I sorta miss the days when companies had to come up with cool insert sets for people to chase that involved actual creativity.
What DOES bother me about game used stuff, or cut autos, is that they're destroying jerseys/bats/whatever that are in a limited supply for retired players. I mean, how many cards does one Babe Ruth jersey support before they have to go buy another one? And how many are there actually out there to go through before they're all gone? Same with bats and historical documents. I don't really care in regard to modern players because they're either still producing material or it's in large supply, but it irks me for older ones. :(

Also, your logic is broken and stupid. Base cards still exist, and inserts still exist, some just happen to be serial #d, and include autographs or jerseys. I can tell you, had the market not evolved to include these additional "hits," it would no longer exist.

No, I said theyre worthless now. And yeah a lot of people look forward to these "hits" but youll never know if its even actual game used material, not that I would care if it were anyway. Look how many gu cards are produced now... How long will it be til we need something even more than what we have now, just like you said with the hobby evolving...

I like the idea of sets having different inserts (non gu) that are rare and can be sought after for years, with increasing value. Im sorry if you dont agree but for some reason it really bothers me that gu cards are popular. Perfect example, precious metal gems from that mid 90's basketball set, metal universe, they go for hundreds even thousands now and theyre just inserts with no gu or auto... I like that. Its hard for me to explain what I mean, I know theyre people out there that agree with me though.

I LOVE game used cards myself especially the LOGOMAN patches which I think are the best game used patches out there! I think it is really cool to be able to get a piece of an athlete's jersey such as Griffey's on a card! I think it makes the card a lot more special that way and that is a BIG reason why I like the modern cards compared to the older cards! Also, growing up in the time period that I have has made it enjoyable for me to do so! Thanks!

I totally agree. When Donruss/playoff did absolute game used cards in the early 2000's, you knew (or genuinely believed) they were legit. I agree with the above statement.
I have to say, GU is what got me back into the hobby after leaving almost 20 years ago.
As a kid I never hit any amazing hits via boxes/packs and I never thought in my wildest dreams that I could own a piece of Ruth's bat or DiMaggio's Jersey without paying for the entire object itself. I mainly only go for the retired HOF players as I agree with other statements in this thread that say how many jerseys can be cut from a current player vs a retired player. Retired player Game Used cards are just plain awesome and will be more rare in the as time goes on. I personally don't care as much for the current players GU.
I am hooked on TTT (sounds like your worst nightmare) simply because of the HOF relics.

GU cards are part of the hobby. It's your choice whether to believe their validity or not. I personally like them, I think they are great, and MANY others like them. Are they in love with them? No, but you can't expect EVERY jersey card to be a patch. It just isnt possible, there aren't THAT many patches out there for them to be used that commonly. The fact that most are jerseys and that some are patches makes the patches that much more collectable. If everything were patches, they wouldn't be that special anymore.
I personally have about 30 game used cards of Longoria, and about 7 autos. Because Autos of a star player are Expensive. So basically, what you are saying is, get rid of GU cards, and make it that much harder for Personal Collections to be gotten. Game Used cards look nice. Period. And they are a cheaper way to have a card that looks nice and is different then just base/insert cards.

Game used cards were all the rage when my son and I started collecting seriously. As time has gone by, we tend to stick to products that offer low numbered parallells and autographs. It all depends on what you like to collect and what has decent value. Relics/jerseys/patches/bats all seem to have a downward trend when it comes to value. There are just too many of them out there. We do collect jersey/bat cards but prefere low numbered parallells. Game used cards have become the equivalent of IP autos IMHO. They are great to have as a PC item, but probably won't hold any value.
