I can't believe that something you can buy at GNC is a banned substance. If it can be bought over the counter without a prescription it should not be a banned substance.

Sergio Mitre was banned as well.

My question is how can an item that was claimed to be clean and ok to use by the MLBPA then turn out to be illegal. If the players association truely deemed the product safe, than how can a player be banned for its use?

I saw the reaction comments from Romero and I got to say he won me over. I hope that they throw out his suspension because these suspensions are becoming tiring.

Trust me- there are items in GNC that WILL get you a positive test in any drug screening... I used to work on our GNC here on base p/t and we did have to pull many items due to the fact that they aren't clean. We have AF guys testing positive sometimes as well. Its just tough to keep up with all these manufacturers and their ever-changing products. Problem lies where the manufacturers are always trying to find a way around selling something that is illegal- all they do is create another name for something such as Androstendione and BAM!=new product line... for those of you that take bodybuilding supplements-you know what I'm talking about!
Its very simple Romero and Mitre- just take protein and drink water! .. stay away from the prohormone section which is easy to tell because it is always under lock & key!

How does the MLBPA saying a product is 'safe' or 'legal' have anything to do with the MLB enforcing the rules on the books? The union is there to protect and serve the players - they screwed up and Romero will pay the price.

Its a joke. MLB, the players union and his trainer all admit this was an oversight in the system. MLB screwed up and this guy is taking the fall. According to what I read, there was nothing wrong with the stuff he took other then it creates a false positive in their testing.
Can't blame Romero for refusing to just be the fall guy, I wouldn't just accept it either since I did nothing wrong. Fifty games is big chunk of money because of other people's mistakes. Selig is an idiot, I hope Romero goes after MLB in court. First he looks the other way for years while guys were juicing and now he's going to suspend guys who didn't ? What an ahole.
As far as the whole supplement rage, GNC is a joke with about 75% of the crap they sell. Most of that stuff is all in people's heads thinking they'll look like some guy in Muscle and Fitness overnight by taking all that crap.
I was big into lifting back in my 20's and early 30's and all I ever took were some amino acids and whey protein powder. I took some stuff called Anabolic Activator which a gym rat told me about. After taking it for about 6 months I find it pulled from GNC's shelves as there was some bad stuff in there that was either not approved by the FDA or missed altogether. Its all BS. Eat right, find someone as motivated as you to train with and stay at it and you get results.

yeah except a lot of the stuff can be bad for you and alters your performance. Just because it can be bought without a prescription doesnt mean it's good for you.
You can make meth with baby formula. There's reasons stuff is locked up even if it's over the counter.

How do we know what he took, trust him? A positive test is a positive test, no exceptions. If hard work and your God given talent isn't enough for you to succeed on the field then put on a suit and join the rest of us. [/soapbox]

A positive test isnt just a positive test without exceptions if it was a false positive. Easy to prove...go test out the product that he allegedly took from GNC and see if it tests for the banned substance that MLB is suspending him for. He shouldn't be suspended for a product that his trainers approved and is sold at a GNC.
