I am a senior in HS.... I don't have a job... My parents are not exactly shelling out money (my dad doesn't get paid in the summer) and I can't find a job.
How am I supposed to find money to support my new-found hobby of collecting??? :(
Thanks.

Find a job, simple answer.
Go find a sugar momma. Some 40ish old broad that will pay you to hit it hard all night long!!!

Like I said, I've tried.
My last resort is the dollar store. I am thinking about turning in an app but I haven't gotten around to it.

If you have the rocks, I hear there are guys that will fund your collecting if you touch their hard place.
Rest Stops, ask if they know chris hansen before exchanging any money. I hear he is doing "to catch a predator: turning the tables" edition.
Either that or your initial intent on creating this thread will work, and everyone will cave, giving you tons of free cards.

Just graduated from high school so I guess I can give some pointers.
Cut down on spending... big time.
Trade stuff you already have for stuff you want. Don't buy trade bait.
Be willing to give up stuff.
And lastly... get a job.
I know the last one sounds bad, and I know the economy sucks, but since I started working in April I can fund both baseball card collecting and hat collecting quite simply. You need to work hard to get rewarded.
Good luck with school!

My advice is to go to a temp agency, that's what I used to do for work my sophmore through senior year HS summers. If you are a proficient typer and score high on the WPM and accuracy tests from the temp agency (at least that's how they do it around here) which I am sure you can if you're lurking around online forums, you may be able to find a good secretarial type job that pays well; especially compared to the dollar store and Mickey D's. I know times are much tougher now than when I was in highschool early 2000's, but you still may be able to find something that suits you well and pays good. Good luck.

Wish I could but I live in a small town with 2 hotels within decent driving distance. A holiday Inn and a Fairfield Inn, nothing fancy enough for a bellboy.

I am not sure what a temp agency is... I feel totally stupid now. Is that like the Job Consortium or whatever? Lol.

My advice to you would be to wait to collect, but if you cannot then the best thing to do would be to take a job anywhere to support your new hobby. When I graduated High School I took a job at a local daycare, but it was to pay for gas and dates. If you are from Cumberland, MD then that is not a small town. I graduated from a town that has a population of 1932 people and no traffic lights. There was and is always work for kids straight out of High School. You just have to be willing to take the job.

A private agency that finds you jobs. They work with all the local companies who pay them to fill jobs for them, especially secretarial type jobs. Although they are called "temp" agencies and some of the jobs are short-term let's say to fill in for a woman who is having a baby or something, some can become long-term as well. I suggest you google "temp agency" or "temporary job agency" along with the town you live in (or a nearby town if yours is extremely small and see what pops up.

Sometimes you need to get outta town. I drive about 20 minutes to get to work from where I live all on major highways... not too much fun. But sometimes you have no choice.

Who has the jobs then? Kids????
I think if you feel a job at the Dollar Store is a "last resort" then you really are not trying.
It does not matter if you are cleaning the sewer pipes for the town...any job at your age is the perfect job.

Dollar store is better than nothing. I say go for it. Or you could get with a local builder and get your feet wet in construction. I would say get into hardwood flooring.

This thread is a perfect example of what is wrong our country today. NO WORK ETHIC. The younger generations feel entitled to everything when they have not put forth the effort to earn anything (obviously there are always exceptions to this statement). I wanted spending money - I worked. This started at 11 or so mowing lawns for the neighbors etc and progressed to restaurant work, grocery stores and so on. Nobody is owed anything thing unless you have put forth the effort to earn it.
Just my 2 cents.

One way you could start is by collecting less expensive players...buster posey and bryce harper are about as expensive as you could get.

What about all the stores that are paying kids to hold signs nowadays? There's tons of them around here. Kids come in the morning, hold a sign for a few hours, and get paid.
The other option is turn collecting into your business and fund it that way. That's what I did in high school. I went to minor league games, got autographs, sold them online, and bought whatever I needed with the money. IP autos aren't as popular anymore but if you know the hobby well enough you can do decent buying and reselling. Apply for a credit card (you'd probably get a $500 limit being a teen), and use that as seed money to get started. Some will say it's risky, but if you love collecting and know what you're doing, it wouldn't turn out too bad.

I agree with the temps. I did that right out of high school and worked in a factory. 12 hour days over the summer but the pay was outstanding!
But yeah... definitely apply to the dollar store if you can. No job is too crappy straight out of high school, especially over the summer. There are so many worse things you could be doing.

i could wrap a few commons in some makeshift packs and then you can open them and be totally surprised and angry that you didn't get anything.
It will be like opening any old Topps product. :D

Go around your neighboorhood and ask your neighboors if there are any household chores or any kind of work they need help with.
It works.... trust me... haha
I am a senior in highschool too

If your budget it limited, try going to Garage sales and Flea Markets. You may find yourself buying to sell and make a profit but if that's what it takes, then by all means give it a try.

I ran out of money, didn't even have any money to pay for my billls. So I got a job at the local McDonald's and they hired me on the spot. Now I've been there for four years and am making as much as the crew trainers now. So its all about your getting your priorities straight. I'm working at McDonald's and I have an accounting degree from a well-known accredited university. Yes I struggled with a little bit of depression about that, but for you, go apply for the job at the dollar store. At my job I have had so many people at McDonald's ask me if I can sell their sports cards for them that it looks like I might be able to start my own consignment shop soon.

Study hard, go to College, get a really good job that pays very well and buy by the case.
Collect cans and buy loto tickets?
Make a sign "Will work for packs of Bowman" and sit out on the side of a road?
Car wash, oil change places, pizza delivery, starbucks, gamestop, LCS?
Are there any farms around? I know here in Ga the farms have lost a lot of illegal workers and are desperate for anyone that will work the fields in 110 degree heat but you can make good money if you work fast and hard.
If I were you I'd worry more about your future and focus on that than collecting right now. Hopefully you got that covered and have a plan, if so just keep applying at places that focus on younger crowds and demographics.

Totally agree with this on the trade stuff. My own budget is getting cut back drastically because my car won't stay healthy, but I'm planning on building up cards by trading and buying/selling on ebay. Going through the BST section on here and searching for things I have/need is just as fun as buying packs, if not more, and can't end in total disappointment. And as far as I'm concerned, money in paypal is some imaginary place that I don't have to worry about when it comes to budgeting :P.
But yeah, gonna need that job thing too haha.

Not that difficult if you think about it
Speed up the growing up process and realize the cards aren't going anywhere & get off the couch & look for work until you get something
Get your priorities right, wasting $$ you barely have on cardboard with pictures and numbers should be last on your list

sign spinning, vallet, security, hotel...
I've actually done or am doing all of these to keep afloat with my regular job. I do an overnight on weekends along with the regular 7-4 job. Only time off is on sundays when I get home at 8am. (been at it for 4+ years now) Vallet was good money and usually cash in hand. Sign spinning may have you look like a fool but most of them actually pay fairly well considering.
you could always try to pimp yourself out on craigslist if there hasn't been a crackdown in your state on that type of stuff.
Good luck. Cards = crack...someone here has that in his signature, and it's so true.
