Sounds like they won't know recovery time until after the surgery. Can't have surgery until the swelling goes down. Bad time for that 5 year $125 million extension to kick in...

Wonder if it'll hinder him in any way in the coming years. I would assume his physical therapy will be extensive and brutal to get him back into shape, but one has to wonder?

Typical surgeries like this take a long time to heal, rehab, and be back to normal. Expected return time should be May-June. And that's assuming there's no setbacks.

Yeah, I would expect the worse in this case and hope for the best. They said they can take anywhere from 6-12 months to recover. He already has a body type that doesn't age very well so I can't imagine that this will help. It's going to be really interesting to see what he looks like in 5 years. He has already been in decline for the past 2 seasons.

Sign Jim Thome to platoon with Mayberry. It will be the farewell tour for Thome. Who's in?

And let it not be overlooked how classy those fans in Philly were when they booed him after this career-altering injury.

You are saying that you are happy he has a ruptured tendon and could miss the season? Nice....

I'll take that. I was (and am) expecting August at the earliest.

I live in Clearwater florida and once year our family had a fire,so the insurance company put us up in a condo style....Little did we know our springtime neighbor was non other than ryan howard! So i asked the lady that was with him if my son and daughter could meet him for an autograph, she said sure and i left the cards to get signed with him....We saw him a few times after that leaving the apartment and never did we get the photo or the autograph .let alone the cards back(which i could care less about)He to me is an arrogant jerk but never would i wish him an injury just root against him on the field!

There is nothing on earth pain wise like a torn achilles, nothing.
He was already on the decline, color him about finished after this.
This is an injury you never fully recover from.

I see 2-3 achillies tears a week. A couple of suture anchors and a tendon augment he will be fine. After surgery they will keep him imbolizied for 6-8 weeks. HoPefully he will come back and play at the same level.

Having torn my achillies while playing basketball, I can tell you that he will probably be back in May. Its not like he is a burner on the base paths anyways so an earlier return with an extensive rehab wouldn't be out of the question. I would not be suprised if he is at least swinging the bat at spring trainning but he won't be running too much and he won't be playing defense. A full recovery is almost a lock, my repaired achillies feels stronger then the one which hasn't been torn. Worst pain of my life though at the time.

I think he will be out the entire year if its a full tear and not a partial tear

SO what if he hit a home run in that at bat? would he have to crawl around the bases? Could his teammates help him? What if he had a stroke or something, would the home run count?

A pinch runner is allowed to run the bases.

This actually happened to Gabe Kapler a few years back with the Red Sox. He was on first base and the batter hit a homer run and Kapler injured his tendon rounding second base.

Expected to be out till May or June of 2012 based on previous injuries on the same kind and how they recovered. Contract was terrible before the injury...now...

Any time is a bad time to have his 5/125 extension kick in. An appallingly dumb contract for a player who is over rated in the first place and whose skill set will not age well.
