I got a huge hit out of 2011 Bowman Chrome a couple nights ago (Matt Moore auto 1/5...one recently sold on ebay for 1600)...but bad luck, it has a crease on the back of the card.
Anyone have any recent experience with Topps Customer Service and give me an idea what to expect?
Thanks
Barry

Youll prob have to sadly list it like that and take the hit, I mean first call Topps and see if they can make a new one and destroy the damaged one, but damn thats rough...Why the Red!!!!!

I have had many experiences with Topps CS. ALL of them were bad. In fact not once did they provide any actual customer service.

You can expect nothing from them except for them to take your money and run.

LOL well, thats encouraging! I suppose I will put it up for sale on ebay with a very good description and very good pics. I just hope someone doesnt still try to screw me on a PP claim.

Don't leave money on the table, call Topps first before you list on ebay!

I doubt Topps has a replacement, but I'd make sure first before listing it.
You have my condolences.

Well, I just got off the phone with Topps and though I understand their policy, I dont like it.
Here is what I was told....Topps are not the ones who value the card because they say it is a conflict of interest. They use a third party to put a value on the card (a Beckett rep). If they cant repair the card (rep said there have been instances where they have repaired 1/1's, 1/5's, and other very rare cards) but if they cant repair it, they will replace it with "equal value". I have to say, his voice did NOT sound confident that they were going to be able to make me happy based on that 1600.00 ebay sale. So basically, I could end up with 100.00 of "equal value" if that is what Beckett deems the value. Do I trust Beckett? No way! LOL
I think my best course of action is to put the card up for sale on ebay, offer to include the blaster, packs, and receipt with the card. I will put up some very detailed scans. From there, I will just have to hope for the best!

In other words, they did not have a replacement Red available?
In that case, list that puppy.
I sure hope the Super Auto doesn't have this problem.

It appears a lot of high-end autos are in the retail packs/blasters this year in 2011 BC. Insane.
Supposedly they do replace it with equal book value, if you want, so if his gold is at $360, the red should be roughly 4x that. They could send you something nice, and in clean condition. I would consider it, for sure.
Did you get the blaster at Walmart?

Damn Barry, you pulled it from a blaster?

11-21-2011, 03:32 PM
Since the card is so rare and the auto is on card they probably won't replace it. Nice hit though. Be sure to mention the damage if you sell. I think you can get 1200

11-21-2011, 03:38 PM
LOL yeah, I pulled it from Blaster and it came from Target. I very highly doubt that Topps will want to give me that much in replacement. I'll end up with about 2-300 I feel. After talking to the rep, I really have to go with my gut instinct.

Whether you got $300 or $1600, you turned $20 into that. Wow what a hit. Anyone know the odds of a red auto in retail?
On another note, I'd be very interested in buying if you can send me some pics

Not sure if Topps handles things the same way UD or Panini do, but when I was talking to a UD rep, they said they keep some rare cards without the foil stamp for their archive. If they get a damaged card back, sometimes they will destroy the damaged card and foil stamp one of their backups and send that as a replacement.
Who knows what Topps does. I've had pretty good success with Topps in the past, but as of late, they have dropped the ball. They shorted me 2 autos out of 2011 Bowman, 1 multi relic auto out of Platinum, and I redeemed to 2010 Finest Strasburgs, that I haven't received yet. When I called them, they said they already sent my replacements. I highly doubt that since they usually require signature verification on strasburg cards...etc.
Anyway, you should see what people will pay for your card on ebay. If you don't get any bites, I would send it back and hope they give you a decent replacement. Who knows, you could potentially get something better.

That's basically the same odds as hitting a 1/1 plate auto in 2010 BC hobby boxes.
Crazy odds, but eventually someone hits the stuff. :)!

You know the card is shot, just get it slabbed and graded so there can be no funny business with Paypal claims. Set a fair reserve and let it go. It is a very special card no matter what condition. Maybe not $1600 right now but if dominates the American league for the next 5 years, you should get quite a bit more than that.

There were many cards in BC that had flawless fronts, but just the back was creased. This may work in your favor for grading. When they grade the surface, I'm pretty sure they focus on the surface of the front of the card, and not the back. You may get knocked down on the sub grade overall, but if the centering, edges, and corners are nice you could still earn a high grade on it.

he makes a valid point, get it slabbed, so there is no eBay/paypal issues. if i pulled an auto like that, no way i would entrust topps in finding a fair replacement. not sure you can ask for anything specific?

whats it grade 6 ? 7?
vikingfan101
11-21-2011, 11:03 PM
If Topps isn't willing to remake it, I would go the grading route itself. People know exactly what they are getting once its in the holder. Typically, when I have a high end card that isn't exactly gem, I send it in to be "authenticated" by BGS. Alleviates alot of problems.
yankeeno7
11-22-2011, 01:53 AM
Those are all very good points everyone. There is no way that card will pull a 6 or a 7...Im guessing a 5 because of the crease.
Mike, thanks for posting up those pics...I was just going to do that this evening for everyone to see.

It will probably come back a 6 or 7. Beckett is tough on creases, but I've had a card with a smaller crease come back a 7.5 overall with a 7 surface grade a few years back.
P.S. If I were the buyer of a high end card that has been "authenticated" but not graded, and it had a big crease like that on the back, it better have been indicated in the listing or I wouldn't be happy. "Authentic" doesn't absolve a seller from properly describing the card's condition, only a GRADED copy would.

Do NOT send that card to TOPPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will NOT get fair sell value replacement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Warning sir. And I suggest you listen. Matt Moore with a crease is still more than what they will probably send you.

I have decided that I will send the card to beckett for grading/slabbing. When I put it on ebay I will still offer to give the receipt, blaster box, and wrappers to the buyer if they decide they want crack it and send it back to topps and take a chance themselves. Thanks everyone for your help!

I had a sonny gray jersey auto from 2010 platinum that I pulled from a hobby box. It had a damaged corner. I emailed topps cs and quickly got a response. They said send it in with a letter of explanation, the box UPC , and wrappers from the box. I had already thrown away the wrappers before contacting them so I explained that in the letter as well. I sent the card off to them and received a sonny gray jersey card about ten days later. So my experience was pretty good. I'm sure they will give you a comparable replacement if they can't give you another Moore. Good luck.

Topps would give you a card worth less than $500. That is not a good idea, IMO.
Also, I can't believe people told you to grade it. I never saw this thread, but I would have said to just be specific in your auction. Listing *AS IS*, and then in the description be CLEAR as day about the condition. I have sold many cards this way-of course not cards quite this valuable, but you get the point. I understand grading it is the fair thing to do, but in doing so you lose a bunch of money.

pretty sure it doesnt matter if you say "as is" or "no returns", buyers can still file claim and get money back for item not descibed correctly(not positive about this, but i think its the case).....i think grading it was your only choice to protect yourself while selling it..... just see what kind of offers you get and go from there....good luck
