hi all. i have had the John Wall National Treasures Colossal logoman autograph #3/3 listed on ebay for a few months ($3456.78) and someone bought it earlier in the week without submitting a best offer. This person's ebay ID is jordansmithes23 and have zero feedback. I messaged him
"Hi there. Thanks for purchasing this item. I am skeptical of this sale though since you have zero feedback. Are you on any sports cards forum or have any history with cards?"
and this was his response
"I own a local card shop in cheyenne wyoming and i do lot of shows in this area and i assure you
you won't have to worry about me paying for the item
i made number of purchases on ebay
i use a different id to buy and sell, you know how it works :p"
anyway, i am wondering what i should do about the sale to make sure that it doesn't somehow come back to bite me. i was going to package nicely in a magnetic holder and bubble envelope with insurance and signature confirmation. is that the best i can do?

You can try calling paypal up just to tell them the situation and ask them what kind of things u can use to protect yourself.

Buy It Now with Immediate payment required
-Best option on Ebay to avoid nervous situations like this....GL with the sale regardless

I would be skeptical too. The fact he said he use different ID's to buy and sell seems fishy. So your telling me you own a card shop and this would be your first purchase on ebay? I don't buy it. Be very careful is all I can say.

Ask what ID's he supposedly uses. I had a bad experience loosing $400 to a guy because paypal sided with him. I even had tracking saying it was delivered I also had messages asking him if he wanted insurance he said no. I would be super cautious with this guy. Seems shady to me. I'd call paypal.

Has he already paid for the card?
He's bought a few other expensive cards:

don't sell it to him seems beyond fishy

Plus if this guy owns a shop and sells at shows there is no way he buys anything at full price.

Why dosent he have atleast one feedback rating?
Nevermind, I was looking at start date.

and the caution flag goes up...Tell him to get on a plane n he can pick it up in person. Or do you know anyone in that part of the country.. i hope he really does live there and isnt having the card sent there, so that it can be sent to him or someone else, somewhere else..His response was very UN-reasuring. Good luck

after reading this thread: http://www.blowoutcards.com/forums/baseball/224374-watch-out-ebay-seller-top-18-a.html
Id be worried he might try the "I only got a base card not the item!" and get his $ via paypal.

If he does pay cover yourself and send it certified mail and make it so this guy and only this guy has to sign for it. Also make sure you get the return receipt on it.

Watch out for chargeback, usually when a buyer goes on a spending spree it means two things. Hes trying to get rid of money that doesnt belong to him or hes going to screw up a few auctions.

You should ask him what his selling ID is and tell him you will message him there

thanks for all the help guys. he ultimately didnt respond to any more messages nor did he pay. and yesterday i got an email from ebay saying
"We had to cancel bids for the following buyer because they aren't registered on eBay:
jordansmithes23
Please don't complete the transaction and don't ship the item. You may have received an email saying the buyer has paid. However, that's probably a fake message. "
and it goes on and on
oh well, i guess i'll relist on ebay when season starts.

Good thing it ended well. While I was reading this I only imagined you had sent the card and would now be in trouble. I would have said 100% cancel the item. I would say that 99.9% of the time the first purchase someone makes on eBay would not be a $3500 card!
I know there is some selling option where you pay $35 for shipping and you are 100% covered, no matter what happens. I read it on BCF awhile back; someone had actually posted the process but now I don't remember nor can I find it.
Good luck in future sales! Would you mind posting the e-mail you got saying that the item had been paid for? I am just curious what it looks like for the future!

I agree with sports cards you are certainly right, but I noticed with other items like cell phones, video games, appliances, etc etc, it is very common with someone with little to no feedback making one of their first purchases while "shopping around" the internet looking for the best price...depending on the item, it could be thousands of dollars and be a perfectly legitimate sale..

No one makes their first buy on ebay for $3500. Zero feedback is a dead giveaway for potential scammer.
