The Lakers made a trade Saturday, but it wasn't for Chris Paul or Dwight Howard.

Two days after getting rebuffed by the NBA in an apparent deal for Paul, the Lakers sent forward Lamar Odom to Dallas for the Mavericks' first-round pick in the 2012 amateur draft.

"It's a done deal," said a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly.

The Mavericks might also send the Lakers another unspecified draft pick. It was not immediately clear if the move was a straight salary dump or a circuitous effort to try to get Howard down the road or, less likely, Paul.

Next year's draft is considered deep, but the Mavericks, the defending NBA champions, aren't expected to have a high selection.

The Lakers lost depth in the front court and a solid character in the locker room. Odom, 32, was the sixth man of the year last season after averaging 14.4 points and 8.7 rebounds. He is owed $8.9 million this season and $8.2 million next season, of which only $2.5 million is guaranteed.

The Lakers also received a traded-player exception worth Odom's salary this season. Trade exceptions are difficult to explain, but the Lakers can obtain a player from another team by trading only a draft pick if the player makes less than $9 million. Teams have exactly one year to use a traded-player exception.

Acquired by the Lakers in 2004 as part of the Shaquille O'Neal trade, Odom was disturbed to be part of the voided Paul trade and did not take part in practice the first two days of training camp. He showed up at the team's training facility Saturday only so he could take a physical.

A favorite of Lakers followers, Odom was not happy with "the way things had been going" in recent days, according to a person close to Odom who was not authorized to speak publicly. Odom is, however, content to be going to Dallas, the person said, and received a welcoming phone call from Mavericks owner Mark Cuban late Saturday night.

Odom found out he was in the initial trade proposal for Paul on Thursday after a reporter from The Times called to ask his thoughts on it. A day later, he was still confused, if not irritated.

"To me, I would think it's better to stay away," Odom told The Times in a phone interview Friday. "You know, the energy and all. I don't know how it's going to go right now. It's a little weird…. Right now, I'll be a fan of the game from a distance."

The Mavericks lost free-agent forward Caron Butler to the Clippers a few days ago and could comfortably restock the forward position with Odom.

Howard, the reigning defensive player of the year, officially asked for a trade Saturday but early reports had him wanting to play for the New Jersey Nets, not the Lakers, somewhat surprisingly.

The Lakers, Nets and Dallas were granted permission to talk to Howard's agent about a trade, but the Nets would have had substantially more to offer than the Lakers if the Paul trade had been accepted a few days ago by the NBA.

If the Lakers lost Pau Gasol and Odom in that trade, they could have offered to Orlando a package of Andrew Bynum and ... what exactly?

Howard and Paul can both become free agents next July, forcing their teams to try to work out trades instead of losing the perennial All-Stars for nothing after the season.

On Saturday, the Lakers withdrew from the framework of a second offer for Paul, who could now end up with a Clippers team that had expressed interest in him last week.

The Clippers could offer center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu, injured guard Eric Bledsoe and the Minnesota Timberwolves' first-round draft pick obtained by the Clippers in 2005. The Clippers remain adamant about not trading up-and-coming shooting guard Eric Gordon for Paul.

Gasol was at the Lakers' facility Saturday and actually took part in practice.

I wonder if Odom might actually play some time at center for the Mavs this season, like he did for Team USA. The Mavs will miss Tyson Chandler's height and shot-blocking/defense, but Odom is no slouch on the defensive end and he's an infinitely more talented offensive player than Chandler. It's obviously a great trade for the Mavs.

Meanwhile, I predict the Lakers will use the trade exception to help land Dwight Howard. I think Howard would be foolish to join New Jersey when he could go to the Lakers and potentially play next to Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol (assuming the Lakers give up Andrew Bynum, the trade exception and draft picks for Howard and Turkoglu's ugly contract).

Does anyone know if Lakers get Hedo from the Orlando in trade can we use the amnesty on him? I sure hope so...

I know there were talks about using it on World Peace but haven't, so I'm wondering if we're holding onto it just in case we have to use it on someone.

Just a Protected 1st Round Pick - Mavs literally stole him ... Guess Lakers not scared of a Mavs' repeat ...

Turkoglu has played poorly these past couple of seasons but he's still a talented player, so I'd imagine the Lakers front office would want to give him a chance, especially as they'll need all the depth they can get if they want to pursue a championship.

We'll see what Ryan Seacrest has to say about this.

I agree, it's a great trade for the mav's, not sure why the lakers did that.

I'm now pretty sure lakers will land Dwight. They pretty much did this to get dwight. They had to have some Huge confidence that they could land him to have traded odom to the team that swept them. Though Howard said he wanted to go to the nets, I believe he said that when lakers was in pursuit of Paul, now that they ain't, he may have changed his mind

I agree with you, SelfDestruct.

I know moving to Brooklyn would give Dwight the chance to be the face of a new franchise, but surely he'd rather move to LA where he'll become a global superstar and have a greater chance of wining a few championships?

He'll be able to learn a few post moves from Pau while he's at it.

I don't think you can amnesty a player that you trade for.

To make things worse, this pick could turn out to be in 2017!!

Exactly - the Mavs choose which year they want to use it too ... I'm pretty sure in 2017 they won't be a Top 10 team and since the pick is Top-20 Protected, they would be able to keep the pick anyway and LAL really would get nothing out of this trade (Just cap relief ) :D

Don't be to sure about that non-top 10 prediction. Either way, it was an outstanding deal for Dallas!

Ill re-post my point from the trades thread:

Ok ok ok..i dont get it. I dont really follow all the in depth NBA dealings and what not...

But the Lakers were going to include Odom in the deal for CP3, in a trade where i saw that was fair for every team and made them all at least a little better. But due to owners complaining..including loud mouth Cuban, it was vetoed.

Now the same loudmouth owner who stirred the pot in the first place..gets away with a steal almost...Odom for future draft considerations?? really??

Andnobody is saying a word about that? the hell does that shady crap happen.

I understand they said the lakers are now trying to load up for a run at DH12..but still

Cuban runs his mouth, gets 1 trade vetod..only because he wanted a player involved apparantly? and thats ok?

first of all, cuban ran his mouth but cleveland owner dan gilbert was the one who was adamant against the laker/cp3 trade and wrote an email dissecting the trade in disgust, calling it a 'travesty'

2nd and most importantly, lamar odom was part of the original chris paul trade, and when it got canceled, odom felt hurt/betrayed that the lakers didnt want him anymore, so he met with GM Mitch Kupchak on friday and requested a trade. in other words, the cp3 trade was killed THURSDAY and it was because lakers wanted to get rid of odom that he decided to leave LA on FRIDAY. so the trade was not killed b/c of mark cuban's selfish desire for lamar odom, unless he somehow knew to begin with that the blocked trade would lead to odom demanding a way out

I understand Cuban doesnt have any powers to see nto the future or anything like that.

My point was, he was definately very vocal about being opposed to the trade from the start. Thus, halting the trade.

Now i dont blame Odom one bit for being unhappy about "being traded" and wanting out.

But hey..looky here what happened...Cuban (yes with others complaining as well) kills the trade. Odom unhappy...hmmm just so happens Cuban shipped off Chandler and needs a big man...and he gets Odom for extremely cheap.

Im not saying anything underhanded happened..just the sequencing of events, especially the cheapness of landing Odom seems..off.

I tend to agree....whats really off is the NBA getting involved in these negotiations in the first place. Every deal now will seem shady in ways because the original Paul/Gasol/Odom/etc. deal was never completed. Stupid NBA.
