View Full Version : Players You Just Don't Like?
lambeauleap87

After an experience in Spring Traning today, I was wondering: are there any players you just don't like for personal reasons? I have two...
Indians UT Jason Donald - At a AAA Columbus Clippers game, he signed autographs once in the half dozen or so games I'd been there...a little boy, probably six years old, asked him to sign a ball and a hat for him. Donald blew up on the kid, telling him he was a spoiled brat and all that good stuff. Yeah, don't like him.
Twins 1B/C Joe Mauer - Voted Pro Sports' Nicest Athlete by ESPN the Magazine a few years ago, I expected him to be cool. Thus when we asked him for autographs throughout the day and he said "Later" I thought he might come through...instead, he blew us all off to record some Russian/Taiwan/Spanish TM promos and an interview with some Japanese reports, saying he wasn't going to sign. Put him on the bad guy list.
Anyone you just don't like?

Come on dude, we can't decide to like a player or not depending on if you sign an autograph. They're major league baseball players, they are not payed to do this. They have a lot more important thing to worry about. However, I do agree with your first example. It would be awful to blow up on a kid like that.

I love Youk. But I can totally understand why all non-Red Sox fans don't :)
Modern day players are for the most part just too likable. Take the modern Yankees for example. Its hard to hate guys like Rivera. I hate his game and his ability, but as a player...he's just classy.
When I was a kid I remember truly hating the Yankees players. Probably because my Dad, Grandfather, and Uncle all hated them too, but there were some real A-holes on those 70's Yankees teams; Piniella, Chambliss, Jackson, Rivers, Munson (rest his soul).
Now on the other hand, the Red Sox fielded a team of some of the classiest gentlemen ever to don cleats :D

In my 19 years of working in professional baseball, only 2 players stand out as major A-holes. Keep in mind, if you work on the inside, 99.99% of players are really cool. Even the cocky ones as long as you work with the team closely. The two that stand out are Danny Clyburn and Drew Henson. Danny Clyburn pinned me up against a locker and threatened to steal my PlayStation because I lost one of his socks. Needless to say the whole team came to my rescue (luckly, dude was huge!). Now on to Drew Henson. In all my years, NO one, and I mean NO one has ever said no to me for an autograph. As a clubhouse manager, it just doesn't happen. Well, Henson was in town and he HATED signing autographs for the fans. Because of this, I had to drive my car on the field, sneak him out, and drive him to the hotel every night. In addition to this, I had to lock up his bats every night for fear of them being stolen. One ride home I asked him if he minded signing a few balls for me before they leave. He agreed and I waited until the last day to remind him. As I asked him, his reply was, No way, I gotta go. This was on top of a $10 tip for 4 days. It may sound petty but I always wished he would fail. I'm glad he did but he still got paid!

1st off.. really don't think anyone should be on this list because they stiffed you for an auto or something.. They aren't obligated to do so and theres other circumstances you have to consider as to why they did or whatever. If they went out of their way to be a jerk about it, then its a different scenario.
Now here's a few that came to my mind -
Nyjer Morgan - An absolute classless loser. Time and time again does idiotic things.
Michael Barrett - Anyone who fights with his own pitchers ....
Carlos Zambrano - Makes me so glad that I'm not a Cubs fan.
Johnny Cueto - What kind of a person kicks someone in the face with cleats?

Okay, so how many of us who named Red Sox players are Red Sox fans? How many non-Sox fans chose players they "just don't like" who are on their own team? Just wondering if it's just us.
I don't care for Youk myself. Lackey of course. Jenks. Beckett is starting to get on my nerves a little.
Non-Sox? Well. Many of the Yankees, I admit. ARod, Nick Swisher. Texeira. Posada. (It's easier to name Yankees I like -- Mo and Cano.)

It's not just not signing...it's how they do it. When you hear nothing but good things about Mauer (for whatever reason...), making your fans wait six hours after promising all day, and then not signing because you want a massage? That was my issue.

Jeff Juden. Most people probably don't even know him but he was an ass. He was on MtL and I was up there on vacation with a few friends. We went to an Expos game and we were standing next to the dugout and he was signing. We told him we were from Massachusetts since he is from Salem or something. His response, "that might work on a rookie but not me." we were like ok and he angrily signed our program before going back in the dugout.

Yankees = Classy
Pro's have made it big and while they don't owe it to anybody to sign anything..100% of the time, they should.
I waited for the Rocket at Yankee Stadium a long time ago when he was playing against the Yanks. He didnt pitch that day, I was the only kid out there, he looked at me with this nasty face and walked away. My dad shook his head, called him a pr*ck and said "that is how not to be".
It's not like I was rude about it....he just plain ol' thought he was above others. It took him longer to stand there and snarl then it would've been to sign my freakin mitt.

I know this is not going to be a popular answer, but this is how I feel.
Ken Griffey Jr.
Grew up a fan of his and it got me started in baseball and cards. Then when he demanded a trade, he immediately became a little cry baby to me. I burned his jersey and sold my entire Griffey collection. The Mariners are now my second favorite team, but when he came back I couldn't care less. I was really hoping they wouldn't have signed him. I have never had so much hatred for a player in all my life. Screw you cry baby Griffey!

Arod because he's a dirty player and a cheat.
Clemens because he's a liar and a cheat.
Pete Rose because he's an a-hole.
Pete was contracted to do a signing at a LCS I worked at in high school. We wound up only selling about half of the tickets for autos so we bought baseballs for him to sign, which we would just sell later (he's contracted to sign x number of autos for a set price).
Anyway, he's now mad that he has to sign these balls (which I can't understand because he's being paid to sign them). He proceeds to sign them and roll them across the table trying to drop them on the floor while we are scrambling to catch them. We wound up with more than half of them smudged.
Then, there is a mentally handicapped guy at the signing who tells Pete he is a huge fan. He asks Pete to put "To Mike" or whatever his name was. Pete says no, even though there was no crowd or line left at this point. After about 5 minutes of this guy telling stories, Pete gets fed up and yells to "get this guy away from me!". I mean, seriously, this guy was OBVIOUSLY handicapped.
I've never met such a douche in my life and wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it with my own eyes. Up to that point, I though he should be in the HOF. After that incident, I hope he never gets in.

I'm not going personal...But I hated Tony Gwynn...He romped on Braves pitching!!!!
But let me add, I met him at All-Star Fanfest and he was surprisingly nice!
Gwynn's name came up on this thread using the search. I thought to myself, "Man, this guy better have a good excuse for hating Gwynn..."
Good excuse! :)
