Yesterday I busted a box of the new Totally Certified Football. Instead of getting 4 game used and 2 autos I got 5 games used and 1 auto. I filed a quality insurance claim on the panini website and one of the things to do is type in the number on the sticker of the box. If you don't know what I am talking about, Chris from the Hobby Box has people pick the last two digits of the box number. My question is, does Panini or any other card company know what is supposed to be in the box based on that number? Thanks

I doubt they know. Just would be huge undertaking. Besides, if they did know, then we would not keep getting shorted on hits. Like the other poster mentioned. It is just a quality control item to keep anybody and everybody from claiming missed hits. I literally have a huge corner of my room devoted to boxes and wrappers of missing or damaged hits. I just send in every 6 months since I open a lot of products would be too time consuming if I sent in everytime it happened. However, I might change this strategy because last 2 times I received the worst low level players you can imagine. Maybe sending in as it happens might allow me better odds of getting some known guys. I am not looking for A listers but a B Lister every now and again would be good. If I opened 20 random packs with hits doubt they would all be the scrubs they send as replacements.

As previously mentioned it's probally for quality control. Also called Lot numbers, something I use in my job. Usually done for traceback. In the event of a recall, you can use those numbers to track where that product went. Ours are coded with the pack date, so if a issue should arise, we know when it was ran and who to yell at.

Topps cant even tell you what item goes to one of their hologram stickers used for authentication by the number...so there is no way they or Panini or anyone else bothers to keep track of what's supposed to go in every single box by the hologram number.
