Panini America Unveils the World’s Longest Football Card in 2011 National Treasures
April 9, 2012

Congratulations. You’re about to witness trading card history. What follows is the exclusive world premiere of the world’s longest trading card, a 36-player record-breaker from Panini America that includes 36 autographs, 36 pieces of oversized prime memorabilia and, when fully unfurled, stands more than 8 feet tall.

Five of these behemoths — including one with inscriptions on every autograph — were inserted into 2011 National Treasures Football via special redemption cards (after all, you can’t really fit something this mammoth into packs). But since words alone come up woefully short in doing this beauty justice, we present the following visual unveiling. Scroll ALL . . . THE . . . WAY . . . DOWN to the bottom for a special video unveiling, too.

Panini America Unveils the World’s Longest Football Card in 2011 National Treasures The Official Panini America Blog (http://paniniamerica.wordpress.com/2012/04/09/panini-america-unveils-the-worlds-longest-football-card-in-2011-national-treasures/)

what an ugly card. what can you even do with that?

not to mention how many "GO ------" inscriptions do you need before it gets redundant and stupid.

instead of putting out quality cards pannini seems to be focusing on throwing as many novelty things at the buyers hoping they find them edgy.

It's a cool card to have but ya I think they screwed this one up. They should have made it easier to display. I thought for sure this card would be sideways and not verticle like it is. U can't even display that in any way that it wouldn't look dumb. If it were sideways I guess u could've potentially made a custom frame of some sort, don't see that as a possibility with it being up and down.

instead of putting out quality cards pannini seems to be focusing on tweeting about their gimmicks in hopes that mainstream sports people like darren rovell retweet one of their tweets giving them a tiny shred of mainstream publicity.

Fixed for you :p

I don't like that they had them sign on the patches. They're bleeding already, and will bleed even worse unless they are displayed flat somehow.

That is a silly concept. How do you display? Show others? Not practical.

A better idea would include a reasonable shape, maybe 8 X 10 or 11 X 17.

Back to the drawing board Panini!

The card individually are very nice! Can't go wrong with jersey signed with inscriptions...

But, together? Yuck!

Winner might want to cut that thing up and sell them individually. I would be interested in a Cobb piece!

Agree.

Nothing that would basically return your money, and then some, is stupid.

How it looks/how it's "executed" is the least of your problems if you pull one.

don't don't people break boxes to get cards they like and collect? Why not just insert a redemption for $1000 cash?

just cause something will be worth a lot of money doesn't make it good.

some of my favorite cards are barely worth anything.

of course if you're talking about buying cards like it's a business then sure, good luck on your lottery ticket

You missed the point.

I collect too, just not the guys on that long card. What is left? I can sell it and get my money back, to do whatever I please with the money (e.g. buy cards I actually want).

Just because I think about how I could sell it, doesn't mean I'm in it only for the money since I think about what cards of guys I collect I could buy...so yes, since it is worth money, it is a good thing in my view.

Horrible idea. Instead of doing something novel and new they just throw more at collectors. How about the same cheap chip technology greeting cards have so the player could record a message that could be played back on the card? Or a number of cards that need to be combined together into a larger "portrait" - say 8x10 with each piece being individually signed?

How did no one look at that monstrosity and go "boy, that ain't very practical - its just going to sit in a box somewhere"?

I think the point is, if it were done better then someone who doesn't collect any of the featured players might want to keep the card simply based on its awesomeness. I've got plenty of cards of players I don't collect simply because they're cool. Unless you live in a lighthouse, there is no decent way to display this.... thing (I don't even know what to call it - "card" doesn't seem to cut it).

I understand that, but it is simply not the way I collect. I look at this card and I see money that will help me buy cards I want, that's the idea (or a card that I can trade for cards I want, though it would be near impossible to trade this thing IMO).

It is not that I'm just looking for a quick buck as the poster I responded to previously seemed to imply - I simply look at the card in terms of what it can bring me precisely because it's not something I would keep anyway. That's why I see it as a good thing since it will be valuable, monetarily or otherwise.

I guess I just don't see what's wrong with putting an expensive card like in a box that also happens to be collectible. Similar to those HRX cards, they don't exactly fit the standard of cards that people collect.

the problem with cards these days is that so many of them have patches and auto's that they rely on that. and when they want to come up with something to top that they end up with ridiculous things.

You guys just keep on hating -

I give credit to Panini for doing something that hasn't been done before - that's something hard to do in this industry. Get over the idea of "how do I display it". I couldn't say how much "value" I have in cards, but I can say that not a one of them is on "display" anywhere except maybe when I go to shows. The stuff sits in a box and I am content knowing that I have it. I would be quite content knowing that I owned this in a box somewhere - and would be happy to pay $1k for it, but I think the likelihood of getting one that cheap is pretty slim.

so you just put your cards in a box without any holders?

cause realistically, unless they send this in it's own fancy padded box, there's really no way to care for it. i can put normal size cards in magnetic holders, but what can you do with this other than let it collect dust. not to mention if you want to show it to someone it's kind of a pain to have to uncoil it and without any casing you risk damaging it every time you open it probably.

the 90's in my opinion were such a great time for cards cause the focus was all on the design and there were some fantastic looking inserts. there's no creative in cards anymore because between and autograph and a patch there's no room. sticking 32 cards together is ambitious, but a long way from creative

studioU
04-09-2012, 09:09 PM
IMO, this shows a total lack of imagination. Panini: "Let's take something we already make and connect them all together." "Great idea Bob, you get a promotion!" Fold out, 8x10, 16x20, collage, connectable cards in magnetics, etc etc. Blah, blah, blah is what Panini hears. We, the collectors, are the teacher to Panini's Charlie Brown.

Yes exactly...that is a brilliant (and simple) idea of something sort of new, that I guarantee nobody would bitch about. Exquisite (and The Cup hockey) has given out redemptions for whole sheets/whole sets of cards before and those seemed to be very succesful.

AND that's not even taking into account your idea of the fancy/nice box and Vanna White hand delivered presentation by Tracy Hackler.

It's really amazing that 2 unpaid jabronis on a hobby board can think of ideas as simple as that but the people who get paid to do it as a career come up with "The Longest Card Ever".:confused:

Agreed.

They really should have made the RPA's with autographs on the patch /5 and the inscriptions a set /1 individually. That would have been sick.

I like the idea very much but not the execution. It really should have been the LONGEST book ever made, That would be %1000 better, I can imagine having that framed and hung up in my hallway coming out of my mancave right now :)!

If this were done properly, you would want to display it.

Any time you'd want to show this to someone or look at it yourself you have to unfold the whole damned thing across the room, risking damage. Might be fun for about 3 seconds the first time you do it, but then you wonder how you're going to store it. Instead of putting it in a box (which is really the only way as it currently is) you could frame it nicely. Technically, you could still frame this the way it is, but it's gonna look stupid.

Um, where have your investigation skills gone? There is a new product coming out that has something just like that and it only has 1 redemption.

If Panini had executed the 8ft card right it could have been an epic change in the approach to a high-end hit. Too bad they don't listen to their customers.

You know it's easy- and alot of people may say so- to say that is a horrible idea but you know what? I bet when it comes to making a profit there would be more of a profit made that way. That is 36 1/1 cards that player collectors of those 36 guys would want.

Yup, 2003 Absolute. I have the Carson Palmer rookie version of it on display. Very cool, I'll try to get a picture later if anyone wants.

They do the 8x10 with nice, big on-card autographs but they are not very popular. I still have 40 of the 120 I got at the nationals, they are hard to sell.

If anyone is interested in them, PM me :)!
