My favorite football product of the year looks much better than last year, can't wait to order me some. Beckett had some of the cards posted yesterday and here's a bit of them w/info.
Each 24-pack hobby box will include one autographed rookie or Rookie Patch card as well as a full slate of rookies, veterans, inserts and even NFL cheerleaders.
Every box will include 10 insert cards and nine parallels when the product arrives in late August.
There are approximately 50 rookie autographs on the preliminary checklist (some still TBD) with Michael Crabtree, James Laurinaitis, Matthew Stafford, Mark Sanchez and Jeremy Maclin among them. The autographed cards also will be found as Superfractors (1/1), Gold Refractors (/10) and Black Refractors (/50).
Among the 30 Rookie Patch cards are Chris Wells, Stafford, Percy Harvin, Sanchez, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maclin, Crabtree and others. Refractor versions of these cards will be limited to 25 copies apiece.
The base set consists of 110 veterans and 110 rookies with the 50-card National Chicle set also returning for Chroming along with the 16-card cheerleader set and a Santonio Holmes Ring of Honor card. There will be printing plates available for all 220 standard cards as well as Superfractors, Red (/25), Copper (/699), and standard Refractor versions.

Chrome continues to be one the best values in the hobby. Yes, your odds of pulling a decent autograph are not "very good", but it's fun.

Hopefully Topps new distribution plans won't hurt the price/availibilty too much.

Did you see an eta on release?
Last year's chrome wax prices collapsed (first time I can remember), and this was with a great rookie class. Scary.

Should have waited.....

Not yet.. I'm going over to the store in about an hour or so and I'll ask them if they've gotten anything from Topps yet.

can't wait to get some blasters of this from Target. ups.
Zacky1053

I had better luck in the blasters of this last year than I did in the hobby boxes. In the eight or so hobby boxes the best autograph I got was Brian Brohm. In about six or so blasters I got three autographs, including a Felix Jones. Definitely one of the better values I guess both in the hobby and retail.

Wow, I love to point out the bad parts of weak products(helps to not waste money on crap). This however, with its slick/simple design, on-card autographs and potential for super-huge hits(Superfractor auto of Crabtree...ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!). I like what I see, wow

just ask yourself "why do you collect". at that point you will know if buying a case of Chrome is right for you. i refuse to allow myself to be suckered into a case of this stuff.
I have been disappointed with Topps Chrome Football Every year since 2000 when they numbered the rookies to 1650. But then again, The hobby has changed a great deal since then, maybe i'm not moving with the times lol

yes sir...times have changed. I made a decent amount of coin on this last year and I know a select few others on the board here did as well. I don't see that changing any this year. There are a ton of set builders out there for the different parallels and inserts...etc.
PS--check my ebay sales. I have a few football #/50 or less. Even a 1/1 Harrell Auto.

Boy oh boy tell me about it!!! I lost around 35-40%. Although I have yet to sort out base sets and a few parallels.

this is the only set I collect and put together myself, and I sell all the cool/groovy cards to help pay for my set. I love this product. Not too expensive, you get great gradable rookies and autos, and you can make a few bucks off refractors and SP's.. it's a great lower end product.

Personally I've liked this product over Bowman Chrome the last few years. More rookies per box, with essentially similar guarantees. I'm a Bears' fan, but I cannot wait to get my hands on the first cards of Shonn Greene in his NFL uniform, probably Donruss Classics or Topps. I don't think an Iowa player at a skill position (other than Dallas Clark) has made it big in forever.

Here's what I'm hearing about retail. I hear blue refractors are probably going to hobby and will be replaced by Green refractors in retail. I hear xfractors are staying in retail, but until the actual sell sheet comes out we won't know for sure.
Last year I got retail from Blowout and then it dried up and the blue refractors went berserk.
Hopefully the green refractors will be the green color from Finest, that would be sweet.

I have yet to purchase a case of cards yet (just recently got back in the hobby a few months ago), but this may be the first. Assuming the price is right of course.

it'd be hard to do a GB of this because of the lack of hits per box correct?

Not necessarily. Team based breaks work ok for this. The RC's and refractors sell well enough that you have a good shot to at least make your money back...pending you don't get absolute garbage out of the case.

So the teams of interst would be jets, lions, broncos, 9ers, colts ( donald brown) and um my old high school??? I'd be down when it happens in august or whenever.

the cards do look very sharp. but im hoping that they dont use the same photos from the sell sheet.
the stafford looks cool but the crabtree and sanchez i dont like.
by the way has anyone seen the sell sheet for the new bowman yet ?
also why do most collectors choose topps chrome over bowman chrome ?
cdub6238
05-29-2009, 10:18 AM
cant seem to find the sell sheet but sure it should be available soon..my only concern about this product is-unless i misread it- theres 1 Auto or GU per box correct? anyone else see this a possible problem...unless it states like last year that they are patch autos and are about 1/case
by the way has anyone seen the sell sheet for the new bowman yet ?

i think this has to do with the fact that Topps Chrome usually has better design, has a huge set for set collectors -seeing how its basically just Topps 400+ card set with the Chrome finish, and while the A Autos are still usually harder to pull, compared to Bowmans Checklist and Collation its at least easier to pull some decent ones out of boxes...also Bowman is usually split between Bowman (usually has 50 or so "Chrome" RCs inserted) and then Bowman Chrome set with rest released later

Before I stopped Collecting ( the 2nd time lol) I was a huge fan of the Topps Finest Product, especially when they started adding the Autos to the cards and used that tiered refractor system. But much like the Game used Jersey, the refractor has lost a ton of luster over the years
The first time i bought Chrome was the 96-97 Basketball and I had all the major RCs from that set including the Kobe and the iverson. My first 2 cases I ever purchased were 99 Topps Chrome Football- The rookies were seeded like 1 in every 2 boxes that year! I pulled an Edgerrin and a Culpepper Refractor RC from the first case ( graded the Edgerrin and it came back a BGS 9.5-Centered to perfection-which was rare in that set), and a Ricky Williams from the 2nd case- I was on top of the world lol!!
That is what I feel Chrome should still be- a high end product yielding plenty significant valued hits. but what it sounds like in this thread is the Topps Chrome brand has significantly depreciated in Value since those days. I checked Ebay a couple times over for the market value on some of last years RCs and they paled in comparison, and now they're even auto'd! what the hell happened? is it because people are just tired of chrome? did the hobby just get so damn saturated with stuff that chrome lost its luster?? i used to drool over this set!!! my fixation was chrome was so bad, i even purchased topps super chrome baseball!!!!
Highcheese4U
05-29-2009, 04:05 PM
...pretty much the saturation of everything has killed the value of stuff, hence the refractor, heck even numbered cards (1-of-1s)...they mean very little nowadays!

The best Topps Chrome year I really liked was 2004. I pull out my set once every month just to look at them. And if someone has a box on the bay. I'm bidding on it. The pics that Indy has up gives me that good feeling again. Clean,Crisp looking cards. Not over done. Oh well. Was just going to get a case of 09 UD FB to build my yearly set. Guess I am going to be building 2 sets this year.
And if Indy or someone else is up to it. Maybe a Hand numbing Group break...Hint,Hint

The only way certain players will go up is if they produce on the field. Until then, 2009 football is very weak to say the least.
