View Full Version : Standard eBay Account Versus a Store Account
Curious as to how most of you prefer to hustle. What's the over/under on listings per month that would make you lean one way or the other?

Had one last year for about 6 months. If you are selling a lot it's worth it but if you are sporadic and don't list very much high dollar than there's really no need.

Mods, can you please move to correct area? Though that section seems more about promoting sales than conversation.

I had an ebay store for a couple of years, and my feelings are mixed. With the OLD fees/etc, it worked out fine for what I sold. 50-100 items a month, fees were minimal, had very little issues.
But the new sellers fees are ridiculous. Let's say you are doing a $1 card store. It's $.10 to list, $.05 for a BIN, and ebay gets 11% of your sale. Right there is $.26 (or 26% of your sale). And even if you ship in a PWE, there's another $.44, so you're at 70% of your total sale in listing fees/shipping. You would need to do HUNDREDS of sale a month to make it worth your time, and I personally do not have that kind of time.
That being said, if you were doing a decent amount of sales in the $3-10 range, you could probably make some bank pretty easily.

Most people don't realize this, but you also get a pretty substantial discount on Auction final value fees if you own a store...
It is pretty much a must have if you sell on eBay

Is that no matter how many listings you sell or is there a set number per month?

You only get these if you're a top rated seller. I do not have a store, but currently enjoy 20% discounts because I am a top rated seller. I don't list enough items per month to justify the store route, however

Yeah, I am pretty sure you put this in the right place. Thanks for posting it where you did, as I wouldnt have checks the sellers spam section for a poll like this. Ignore people who get on threads to only try to look smart and degrade others. Thanks for the poll!

Was looking at it myself. They do have a savings estimator. From what I put in because I wouldn't be selling more than 50 cards a month, It would cost more to open a store.

Depends on what you are trying to sell and how you want to sell. If you have a decent number of $50+ items you want to list as BIN/BO, then you should get a store. If you don't list items too often, then you get 50 free auctions a month if you don't have a store.

yep, based on thier calculator, you need to list ~52 Fixed price auctions to break even with a store. 52+ and the store is cheaper

But this depends on the value of the Selling price of Fixed Price. if they are higher, your break even would be different due to the fee structure on higher priced items.

This isn't true. Use the eBay fee calculator for an auction with an ending price of $200 and a STORE OWNER will pay $9.85 in fees. A NON STORE OWNER will pay $18. I do not know why people pass around false information as fact. Just do some simple Google searches to figure this out.

Yes use that fee calc to help you decide. Honestly most of my sales are auctions and it seems like with fixed price I might list 100 a month but typically only end up selling about 25 or so of those. I did the store for 6 months and just wasnt able to justify it even with the larger discounts. It seems like the stores really save those who rely on the fixed price listing which makes sense since thats how "stores" typically operate.
I have been tempted to try it again and just do all my listings BIN but price closer to market value. It seems like with that model a store account can make a lot more sense.

My apologies as I was not as specific as I should have been in my original post, and I did not read yours correctly
I only did Fixed Price Calculations... Which IS fact, by the way, that FVFs are the same for store owners or NON store owners. The only difference is the insertion fee, which is negligible on larger ticket items if you are not creating many listings per month.

I have a regular account because it works for me...I am still a student so I don't rip a ton of product...maybe a box every month or two...and a guarenteed hit pack every couple of weeks
i also have a very small 8 card PC, and whatever I open almost always goes right onto ebay
so i dont get any discount, but I love the 50 free listings at any price

I am thinking about getting one this weekend. Been selling a ton of cards on ebay recently via BIN/BO, and I think it should be a solid idea. Will easily have 400 cards to list right away

If anyone could answer this, it would be greatly appreciated.
I'm going to be opening three jumbo and two hobby cases of the new Bowman when it releases. I am currently a top rated seller and I'll have 50 free listings in May. If I was going to sell all the base/insert/prospect/chrome cards as player lots and the autos I don't want individually, would I be better off getting a store for a month (if that's even possible) or selling like I normally do. This thought never really crossed my mind until this thread, so I have done zero research on it. Admittedly, very lazy. But maybe someone that's done it before can save me some time with a simple explanation. Thanks.

If I sell 1 card at $200 via Auction (starting at $0.99) with no store it would cost me $18 after ebay fees.
If I sell 1 card at $200 via Auction (starting at $0.99) wth a store it would cost me $25.95 (after $10 ebay fees and $15.95 basic store fees).
As you list more cards and/or have a higher total sales price, a store will eventually be what you want to have. After you reach that level, a store will always be a better option.
For example, if I only do Auctions, do 200 of them and all sell, and assuming my average sale is $5, then this would be my threshold ($141 with s/h at $2 per). Any more listings per month would mean that the store would be a better option. Any less listings, then no store option would be a better option.
Now if you do over 50 BINS/BO only per month and you sell less than half of those, then a store will be a better option. Fixed Price Insertion Fees are very high and you would only need to do 50 or more per month while selling less than half of them to warrant a store.

speaking of the top rated status
who is now going to offer returns to keep the status ?

It would be beneficial to have a store if you plan to do Fixed Priced Listings for all of them to pay for a store (50 plus auctions) especially if you are going to keep running them as short term fixed auctions. If you plan to just start the auctions at $0.99 and let them fly, then unless you have over 200 auctions, you probably will want to not have a store.

400 BINS/BO - oh yeah..might as well do a store especially if there is a chance that they aren't going to sell the first listing. Many people do the short term listings to get more people to look at them (1st and last days).

And you have to do 1 day handling time i believe (basically print the label within 24 hours of payment). Based on the new rules I will qualify for this just when I was about to quit selling for a while now I have a dilema.
Like someone else mentioned if you are doing good volume I would say 75 or more sales/auctions a month it will work out better getting a store. Another big advantage is if you use a lot of pictures, you can do i think up to 15 if you have a store at no additional cost whereas anything past 1 without the store cost per photo.
But plain and simple no volume=no store. ITs not worth it.
