"I understand why some people, at first glance, may believe this move was financially motivated, but I can assure you that this was strictly a baseball decision," Huntington wrote. "In fact, our owner, Bob Nutting, was as surprised as some of our fans when we sought his approval for this trade. I am grateful that he has the faith in me, our baseball operations staff and the processes we have in place to approve a move like this, despite the risk of public backlash on him personally and the organization as a whole."

I don't think it was. I think that was part of it. But mostly to be able to finally get Andrew McCutchen a spot in the line-up every day.
Looks like he is going to be a stud in Center Field. That kid can fly! :)!

I have to agree with Guru. Most of it was for McCutchen. Plus the Pirates got three prospects in return. Gorkys Hernandez, Jeff Locke and Charlie Morton. Before the trade Morton was 7-2 with a 2.51 ERA in AAA and the Pirates always seem to need pitching.

Yeah, and Gorkys Hernandez is a very highly rated prospect.

If you have an All-Star in McLouth and a prospect in McCutcheon what in the world is wrong with keeping both versus starting over with risky unproven talent? This is not a formula in my mind for winning.

I don't think the money had anything to do with it. They just signed him to the extension over the winter (might have been last summer). He said that they had been approached with an offer they couldn't refuse. I think that is complete BS because I think they would have been able to get more for him. Hernandez is a highly rate prospect that plays the same position as Cutch, so he won't be playing for the Bucs if he makes it to the bigs. Tabata is eventually going to be moved up, so that is another OF spot filled. And for whatever reason, they have a hardon for Brandon Moss, who I have not been terribly impressed with at all. And by all accounts I have read, Morton is a "AAAA" pitcher. Meaning he is very good in AAA but doesn't have a high ceiling for the majors. And Locke, haven't seen much on him.
I thought Hernandez had already been moved to Left Field.?

At least Zach Duke is pitching awesome this year! :)!

Mclouth is having a good game tonight against the Pirates. Just stole second. Already hit a homerun tonight as well.

How about Cutch with 2 triples tonight. I think my fantasy teams are going to have that category locked down. 3 triples altogether tonight (2 for Cutch and 1 for Sanchez).

I think the Pirates have some of the fastest players right now. It hurts to say that as a Cubs fan.

I can pretty much guarantee that they have the fastest 1 - 2 combo in the league. Outside of Cutch and Morgan, they are pretty slow. Sanchez's triple was a gap shot in Atl that I could have legged out for a triple.

Hinske looked really slow running around the bases. He also looks like he has put on weight since his Blue Jays days.

I was just thinking something similar. Its actually kinda depressing watching him come up to bat in a big time situation and not see him do it in a Bucco uni :( Makes my hatred for Bob Nutting grow even more every time Nate walks up to the plate.

Yep. Just another deal involving a great player of ours that definitely has us kicking the wall swearing cuss words everytime he hits a HR or does something spectacular.. esp against us!!!

WOW, I think I'm going to se the Reds play the Pirates just this year to see this guy!!
Maybe letting go of McClouth wan't such a bad thing after all... I suspect the Pitrates will have a few more butts in the seats when they get back home
