Im trying to enjoy the Yanks Red Sox game on MLB Network but I must admit that Bob Costas is horrrrrrible to listen to...Id rather listen to Fran Drescher announcing the game... which made me think who is the best TV baseball announcer... I really like Vin Scully for the Dodgers and think Ray Fossee does a great job for the A's... who do you guys like? and anyone else suffering through the Bostas Sox Yanks game:confused:...?

I used to love Costas years ago, but he seems to have become a little to happy to hear his own voice lately. Vin Scully goes down as an all-time great--maybe THE all-time great. I've never heard Fosse. My frames of reference are Mets, Yankees, and then the National broadcasts on Fox, ESPN, etc. I think Ron Darling is a very good announcer with the Mets.....he adds a lot to the game. For the Yankees, I like Ken Singleton and used to like Bobby Murcer. I actually like Paul O'Neil when he announces......I can see how some wouldn't, but he has a good sense of humor and I like his insight. Many of the guys TBS had doing the playoffs last year were very good--I think Darling was one of them but I am drawing blanks on others.
Too many guys today are in love with their voice and think they are the reason we watch the game. I always loved guys like Harry Caray, Phil Rizzuto, etc who were a part of why I watched the game, but not really on purpose......they were just characters. Now we have guys who are trying to be "characters" and aren't. Tim McCarver is exhibit A (and B and C!!). I don't think anyone will come close to his level of annoyance.

Vin Scully is great. I hate the Yankees, but I'm a big fan of Michael Kay. He does a fantastic job. Baseball lost its best announcer when Buck died.

Never heard Kay...yah Buck was legit too... I had this recorder when I was a kid (circa early 1990s) that you use to put topps electronic baseball cards in and they would talk about the player... was like a sports talk baseball thing...I think Buck was the announcer? anyone know what I am talking about or have one too?

Tom Hamilton and Vin Scully are by far the best two announcers in the game today. Curt Goudey was another one who ranked up there in his day. Harry Caray was over rated and did a terrible job IMHO.

I like Pat Hughes here in Chicago. Does a great job of mixing some fun with the broadcast of the game (Like one of his obsessions is guys with two first names: Cory Wade, Joe Nathan, etc).
HOWEVER, Vin Scully continues to amaze me. I swear, from clips I've heard, he sounds exactly the same today as he did 30 years ago. He's definitely one of the greatest play-by-play men of all time.

I really like Mario Impemba and Rod Allen here on FSN Detroit. After hearing them the past few years, everyone else seems to be dull and uninteresting.

I agree Harry wasn't a great announcer.....he was just entertaining!! He was often drunk by the 4th inning (or earlier) and you never knew what he would say. For awhile he was attempting to say players names backwards. I still remember his attempt at Dann Billardello......it was UGLY, but entertaining!
I should have mentioned Michael Kay....he gets abuse as a "homer" sometimes, but he is a very good announcer. Another entertaining guy was Ralph Kiner-- "It's Father's Day here at the ballpark, so to all you fathers out there.....Happy Birthday!"
I guess it all depends on the game--in a blowout, it's good to have a Rizzuto who can at least make you laugh. In a good game though, you want a Scully.

Local Buffalo Sabres announcer Rick Jeannert, if u've never heard him take a look at the vid, he just adds excitement to the game, i cant watch a Sabres game without him :D

See now I think that Kay is pretty fair for being a Yankee announcer. He calls it like it is. If they are getting outplayed, he says it and doesn't try and make excuses. That is what I like most about him.

I think everyone was staying specifically on baseball, but if it goes to hockey, I would say that him and Mike Lange are two of the best.

I grew up on Skip Caray and Don Sutton...so I'm kinda partial to them. And Joe Morgan sucks.

Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling doing the Mets have grown on me. Kay does that Yanks well, Ken Simpleton not so much. Just tonight he got all up in arms because Penny from the Sox hit A-Rod with a pitch - went on and on about it for like 5 minutes........

The problem is most of the good ones do radio. Color tv has killed the truly great announcers. One of the reasons I got a XM radio was to listen to some of the play by play radio guys and they paint an image in my head of the game and nothing is better then sitting on the porch drinking a beer and picturing the game in your head. It is a lost art and only a few of the radio guys can do it really well still.

wolffer12 - Wow... I love you post... what a true lost art is listening to the game on the radio... much better than tv... also I really enjoy the lost art of keeping score at a ball game... nothing better than eating a dog, drinking a beer, having a bag of seeds and completing a scorecard that has beer and mustard stains on it by then end of the game... your guys list is great...having only lived in LA and the Bay Area all I get to see is Vin Scully when I was in LA (and he was awesome... he could spend 15 minutes talking about beach balls at dodgers stadium) and the A's (Fossee) and Giats (Mike Krukow and Duane Kiper) announcers up here... would love to see some regional coverage to see some of the other announcers around the states...

I agree with you wolffer12. When I was a kid my Grandfather and I would listen to Harry Kalas on the radio while also trying to listen to Merrill Reese doing the Eagles games on TV. I have sirius and love to switch back and forth between the regional Football broadcasts and hear all of the different announcers. To go with everyone else Buck and Scully are at the top of the list with Kalas.
The announcers today just don't hold a candle to the old-timers. It is a shame that there really isn't anyone to pass the torch to.
And to stay in the Philly area I loved listening to the Flyers broadcast with Gene Hart.

I grew up on a farm in BFE with no cable tv until I was in the 6th grade. I tell this story to a lot of my friends who didn't know me back then and they are shocked by this. I actually prefer to listen to games on the radio so I can paint the picture in my head. I have fond memories of my dad and I sitting in the garage or outside throwing the baseball and listening to Herb Score do that Indians baseball games. My neighbors think I am werid because I will go sit in a chair near my truck with a beer and listen to the game on the XM because I lost my cable to listen to it in my house.
I will never forget the 97 season, which was Herb's last, during game 7 of the WS we got the radio out in the 8th inning when it appeared to everybody that the Indians were going to finally win the title. We all wanted to hear Herb and how he called that final out for the WS title. Then came Joe Table and pissed down his leg. I was in HS during the time and there were tons of people over for the game and we had the Champane out and ready to pop only to see Cleveland lose. Oh sorry for the digress here but my memories go deep for the radio play by play guys and I love to listen to them this day. I have been known to mute the TV and listen to the radio.

Living in Wisconsin, its pretty tough not to like Bob Ueker (sp?)---one of my favorite things to do with summer weather is to open up some windows, fire up the XM Radio and find the Dodgers and Vin Scully playing a late home game---not a Dodger fan by any means either (in fact as a Reds fan, I am far from a fan), but Scully on the radio on a nice summer, windless night--perfect

Jon Miller for the Giants. I will say Vin Scully is the best of the current broadcasters, but Miller would be second in my book.
