Biased answer: Evan Longoria :)
Unbiased answer, Mike Trout, given of all the people there, could hit for the best average, 30 Sbs and 20 HRs, which would make him a perennial all-star
Right now, Justin Upton is the best pure hitter on that list, but Trout passes him I think.

Starlin Castro has a legitimate shot at breaking Pete Rose's hit record.
He is currently 22 years old and already has nearly 400 career hits in about 2 full years of service.
If he can play healthy for 17 or 18 years, he could certainly push that record to its brink.

Yeah, all second overall first round draft picks that hit over .400 two years in a row in college and lead the nation in hits while also having the most hits in college work series history. Detroit's Miguel Cabrera hit two home runs to reach 300 for his career in a 6-4 win over the White Sox.
Cabrera is the 13th player in history to be in his age-29 season or younger and reach the milestone. The others: A-Rod, Ken Griffey Jr., Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Eddie Mathews, Albert Pujols, Andruw Jones, Hank Aaron, Mel Ott, Juan Gonzalez, Frank Robinson and Adam Dunn.
The two-homer game was Cabrera's AL-leading fourth of the season, and it also constituted his AL-leading 41st multi-hit game of the year. Cabrera is also fifth in the AL in runs, first in hits, tied for fourth in doubles, tied for seventh in home runs, first in RBIs, third in batting, eighth in on-base percentage, sixth in slugging, fifth in OPS, first in total bases and second in extra-base hits.

Trout. He will eventually get more power but not a player always looking for the HR. His in game batting adjustments are exceptional , and see him as a Rose / Gwynn type hitter with a lot more pop. His doubles and triples will either lead MLB , or be right near the top for quite some time.

Define best hitting, if its avg, obp nobody comes close to mauer, hes still under 30 and could win his 4th batting title this year.Konerko is good, but he is a lifetime .284 hitter and Trout like most Rookies will fall a little back to earth. I could write a paper here ... but really all I need to do is point you to Dwight Gooden's Wikipedia page and career stats. After his 1985 season, people said the same thing about him. Freaking amazing year, will forever be known as one of the most dominating seasons by any player to ever play the game. And while he finished his career with incredibly respectable stats, you won't see him near any "greatest pitchers of all time" discussions.
You just never know.

And while he finished his career with incredibly respectable stats, you won't see him near any "greatest pitchers of all time" discussions.
You just never know.

Trout might be the best player to play the game of baseball ever when its all set and done..
2873 hits, 506 2B, 136 3B, 714 HR, 2213 RBI, 123 SB, .342 avg, .474 OBP, .690 SLG, 1.164 OPS
94-46, 2.28 ERA, 1.16 WHIP
No, sorry, we will never see a player as great as Babe Ruth. They won't allow a player to be both a pitcher and an every day hitter, so we can't see that type of dominance ever again.
And if you want to play devil's advocate, think of the offensive numbers he would have put up if he wasn't a pitcher the first ~5 years!
As for this post, I would say the best hitter over the next 10 years will be Evan Longoria.

No, I understand completely. Trout is a great hitter, and a heckuva lot of fun to watch, but only through 6-8% of his career. And not to just throw around stats, but his WAR is about as low as you can go and still be the league leader.

Has anyone said anything about Billy Butler? I'm not saying he'll be the best but he could be one of the better hitters for the next 10 years. He's only 27 and just had his best season so far. And he doesn't just hit for power, he hits for good average as well.

Here's my take on the Mariners.
Ackley- Fooled me too. I thought he was going to be a lock for a .300 avg every year. Watching all the games like I do, I can tell you, he does have the tools to be a very good player. He is just too inconsistent, and not nearly aggressive enough. He also gives up on himself very easily it seems. If he has a mini slump, he tries changing everything. If he would have stuck to what got him to the big leagues, I think he'd be a much better ballplayer.
Montero- Can't count him out yet. Will he be the top hitter for the next 10 years? HELL NO! But, he did rededicate himself this offseason, lost a ton of weight, and has become a very good first baseman. I am assuming at this point he slept with Lloyd McClendon's Wife or something, because with our offensive struggles. No way he should be sitting in Tacoma still. I still think he could be a .280 hitter with 20-25 HRs

In 10 years from the original post would be 2022. Most hitters reach their prime in their late 20's/early 30's, so it would be someone who is ~20-26 currently!
Nolan Arenado would be a good, non-obvious choice. For a younger, riskier pick, I would say Francisco Lindor.
It is more likely Jesus Montero will be in the ice cream business than a top hitter...

Anyway, Trout is really the right answer, but that's boring. I gotta go Mookie Betts for my non Trout pick. Not sure the power was real last year, but at the rate he makes contact he is bound to run into 15+ homers a year with an amazing average. Still only 24 too.

Has to be Trout if he stays healthy. But, are we talking "best" as in hits, AVG or HRs? Could have a Tony Gwynn type of guy surface, or Boggs. Or we could have a McGwire with no average or any other "hitter" stat who mashes 40-50 bombs. Best overall guy I think will be Trout. At least all of my PC hopes so
A Side Note:
If he stays on this pace and plays only four more years he could be lock HOF first ballot guy. His stats are sick compared to the greats.

If we did a top 10 list today, would any of those names be on it besides Trout and Harper?
Since this thread was made Freddie Freeman has ranked as the 6th best hitter in baseball, just ahead of Bryce Harper. He's older now, so maybe not, but he was worthy of being on the list.

I hope that the 79 people who voted Montero/Castro/Trumbo have left the site because of the immense shame associated with their vote. If any are still around, we need a new pole to see if they should be banned. I vote yes.

Ackley is highly overrated? Yeah, all second overall first round draft picks that hit over .400 two years in a row in college and lead the nation in hits while also having the most hits in college work series history. Along with winning multiple collegiate awards. His MLB career has only just begun. But yeah he is overrated. Lmfao. Hater!
Also thought this quote was hilarious. BAN!!!

Miguel Cabrera will still be the best hitter in the next 10 years.
yeah, about this prediction. Forgot the disclaimer of him being out of shape for the past 5-6 years which has led to countless injuries.

10 years have passed since I created this thread. Crazy. Maybe I should make a new one for the next 10 years.

Reading pt 2 thread made me come back to read through these. Nailed most of the actual best hitters of last ten years. Some unfilled potential like Hosmer and Castro. And lots of love for Kemp

Led the league in OPS+ the year before and was hitting .400 at the time of this poll. Injuries did him in.

Voted Bryce Harper just because this 10 year old poll was still open. :D
