I have a funny feeling that the spurs are gonna take it all. Reardless, if the spurs win, I think you have to start taking about coach pop as one of the greatest coaches...He flies under the radar and gets the most out of his teams and players..He seems to have the respect of everyone in the league and is considered a great basketball mind...On a side note, which coach would u rather have, Pop or Phil?

Phil has how many more rings than Pop?

LOL! Phil isn't yesterday's news yet. Just 1 year removed from coaching.

So Pop is today's Pop. If you get my drift. :)!

Obv phil wins against most on rings and noone said phil is yesterdays news. However, I'm talking aout coaching ability..Pop is the best coach in the nba imo and should be considered one of the greatest coaches. Especially if he gets by the thunder n beats the heat, who will more than likely represent the east...

By saying "Greg Pop today's Phil Jackson"

is saying Phil Jackson is a person of yesterday or yesterday's news.

Nobody would dispute that Greg Popovich is one of the, if not the, greatest coach in the NBA today.

Phil Jackson always had the best player in the league on his teams. IMO Jordan, Shaq, and Kobe will go down as three of the ten best players of all time. Popovich has only done it with one of the top ten best players of all time (Duncan).

The two are night and day. Phil had, for the most part, ready made teams and managed players/attitudes to get rings. Pop manages the game and has changed his philosophy based on what he has to work with. In my opinion, they are both great but Pop has by far had more influence on the championships his teams have won.

Well, phil isn't a person of today's news and he ain't coaching at the moment, so il stick w what i said...It was a compliment, but if u wana take it as in insult to Phil, thats fine. lol :)

Tough question, but I do agree their styles/strengths are unique. I'd take Phil over anybody on earth to coach somebody like the Heat. He's the undisputed master of harnessing massive egos/talents and convincing them to sacrifice some personal ambition in order to win. I could see bringing him in for a single season and expecting him to win.

Pop is somebody I'd rather have to bring together a team that is talented enough to win, but isn't necessarily stacked. I'd want him with a team that was a piece or two away and give him three years to bring home a ring. In today's terms, I'd actually rather have him over Phil to coach the current Bulls team.

I doubt either one would be quite as successful if they switched roles.

what is their to explain???

People are acting like Phil Jackson only succeeded because he has had great players.

Well Pop has the GREATEST PF the NBA has seen and has always had role players around him with a few all-stars. Pop is a great coach, top 5. But no where close to Phil and Auerbach.

He has been unable to coach through consecutive titles. And I think that is what has separated Phil and Auerbach from any other coach. consistency!!!

Pop's ability to bring out the best in players in unmatched IMO!

Being able to do what he has done with second round/late first round picks is truly legendary! Like Danny Green in the current team!

He is Definately twice best current coach, no doubt, but hard to say better than other coaches when the situations are so different

No one will ever amount to Phil or no one in the near future.

exactly, there is nothing really to explain. His record. And accomplishments speak for itself.

Pop and phil are more contemporaries than anything else. I think bar none that pop is the greatest modern day coach next to Phil though. Phil did have Jordan, shaq, and Kobe his whole career though. Pop has had drob and timmy most of his, so advantage Phil. You have to wonder how many more rings Pop would have today had he had the talent Phil did on all his teams. I can tell you I would of loved Pop coaching this years laker team, because he would have them exactly where the spurs are right Now. This season might be his best Year coaching yet, the way he's managed the vets and the young guys. Much respect.

Hack a Shaq by Pop was one of the smartest gameplan. Phil had the triangle which is one of the toughest to stop if he had all the right players in each position. If Pop can win championships after Duncan retires then i would put him up there with the best all-time but as for now it's just Phil and Red. I would put Pop even with Pat Riley.

Yeah, good post!

However, Pop had DRob for less that half of his time as SA. His future 'Big 3' consisted of 1 superstar, 1 late first rounder (28th) and 1 second rounder - as a sixth man almost the whole time!
