View Full Version : Anthony Davis hobby value?

Since he will go to New Orleans and a seemingly small market, will this hurt his hobby value when he is drafted. I personally think he has the potential to be a perennial all-star, but the market has a lot to do with card values.

Well he still will be the #1 pick and played for Kentucky so there will still be plenty of hobby value. But his unibrow will seal his hobby fate.

His stuff will be on fire right out the gate. If he can score at the next level, his value will be just fine.. If he turns out to be a very solid nba player like a marcus camby type, eventually his stuff/value will be ehhh...

He will be hot initially, but like all big men in the hobby with close range shooting, he will fade to average collectibility. The flashy guys will get all of the attention.

I watched Davis play alot on highschool and he shot the ball really well for a big man from the 3 pt line.

Here's a highlight video from his senior year of highschool:

Anthony Davis Official Senior Season Mixtape - #1 HS player in USA (Kentucky commit) highlights - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OSxB2HZAKE&feature=endscreen&NR=1)

People have to remember, he was a 6'1" PG before his 10 inch growth spirt so he is going to have point guard skills and be a decent shooter.

Did he shoot well at Kentucky? No. He also wasn't asked to as they had great shooters around him and it would be doing the team a disservice to have their center stepping out and shooting long range shots.

Take a look at that video though and you will see that Davis can shoot the ball extremely well for a big man. I think he'll surprise alot of the people that are calling for him to be a bust.

Yeah, idk what you're watching (or not watching, that is) but Davis has a pretty solid mid-range jumper that he's DEFINITELY going to have to use his first few years before he builds his frame. No way is he going to get into the paint with that stick-figure of a body.

If the Hornets retain Gordon and draft another offensive threat, I think Davis falls back to his Kentucky role. I foresee him at the center position for now, which doesn't give him a lot of chances at outside shooting. Kaman is out, and Okafor is either out or unreliable. If they pick up a reliable center and Davis can still shoot, then he could shift to a Kevin Love type role, but in the foreseeable future the Hornets will play him at center. I don't think he will be a bust, but if he is stuck in that position, he won't get much hobby love. Investors should hope for a change.

i'd be more than happy to sell any anthony davis' cards i get and invest in other players from this draft that have a ton more hobby upside such as Gilchrist and Beal who will be big-time scorers IMO.

I sure hope that Davis doesn't end up like Chandler or Camby, but unless he turns into Kevin Durant (about the same size), I'd say he is headed towards a hobby disappointment from a collector's standpoint.

well we're gonna have to wait a while to get our hands on any of his cards anyways...

I picked up the 2012-13 complete rookie set from Past & Present for $125, so I hope everyone from next years rookie class are exceptional. Gives me a nice head start and don't have to worry collecting when prices are above value.

I think if Panini make National Treasures next year with RAP's, then they will be worth a bit!

Since NT came out in 09/10, the only Hornets RAP you can get is Darren Collison and he F***ed up all of the patches by signing on the material. Hornets have some of the nicest looking patches of all the teams, so I expect a Davis RAP with a sick patch to be highly sought after ;)

If you are talking about Roddy B making his auto go off the edge and onto the patch, then you must not have seen a Collison yet? lol

The picture of Collison is almost as bad as the messed up patches.

It looks like Collison was probably standing near halfcourt during a 20-30 pt blowout, with a sad dejected look on his face while some scrub from the opposing team was shooting free throws. Of course it was the opportune time for Panini to get an incredible snapshot of him for his National Treasures rookie.

i think his cards will be crazy expensive when they first come out and will go down from there. i don't see him being a huge star and at to that the fact that big men don't get much hobby love.

LeonfromNC

The only "Big" man that gets any type of hobby love is Kevin Love and he's actually a PF. When it comes to Centers though, ugh. Dwight Howard doesn't even sell well. Kind of sad because in the 80's and 90's it was all about the Big Men (Shaq, Mourning, Ewing, Olajuwon, David Robinson, etc)

I think if the team wins, he will get ample hobby love. Very unique player and those type of guys usually sell well. He will score from all parts of the floor ala kevin love and unlike dwight.

can he shoot threes?

and does he have a legit post game? nba worthy?

i only remember him really making layups, dunks off oops and mid range shots...

Probably because you're a bitter UL fan and are seeing what you want to see.

At the beginning of the year his offense was strictly dunks and putbacks. By the end of the season he had a reliable mid-range jumper, post game, and ability to take his man off the dribble from the top of the key. I can honestly say that I have never seen a player improve this much offensive over the span of a season in my short time watching basketball. His 3 point shot will come, he has the ability to hit them but took about one a game and it was usually rushed, with his shooting form I see no reason why his range won't extend out to the 3 point line as he gets more comfortable.

I'm not guaranteeing he will put it all together and become a superstar, but as someone who watched him improve literally game to game, I think there is a much better chance of that happening than him becoming a bust --> let's not forget this is a guy in his second year of being 6'10" with a 39" vertical and 7'4" wingspan. He has a thick base, which leads me to believe the size up top will come with time. He is already thicker than KG was at the same stage.

post up game that is nba worthy? no way he scores one basketball on dwight in the post right now. he would first have to get into the lane and with his frame now its not looking good.

and i really don't see him as a 3 point shooter in the nba.

all i'm saying he is not a clear cut 'to be star' in the nba and i know there are plenty of people that agree with me. not saying he can't become one but he has a lot of improving that needs to happen.

absolutely nothing.

You show up and bash every thread involving a Kentucky player. So yes, it has everything to do with it when that is the reason behind your 'analysis'.

dude shot 3/20 from 3 pt line. thats a whooping 15%. sorry if i don't believe a kentucky fans hunch that the guy is going to be a legit 3 pt shooter in the nba.

i said the guy has the chance to be really good. but i think there is a lot of things he really needs to improve to become a 'star'.

how is that bashing every kentucky player in the world? its not. i have nothing against kentucky and have rooted for them in multiple championships and tournaments so don't act like you know 'whats behind my analysis'.

ill say it again. i think davis could be a good player but he also could be a bust. he is not a guaranteed to be star like other players in the past have been entering the draft. this is an opinion but once again i am not the only person in the world that thinks this. so if you don't agree with it you don't need to attack me for no reason and act like im some loon with a personal vendetta against the state of kentucky.

Which is why I said I expect his shot to extend out to 3 point range in time. His form is fine and he extended it out to be consistent from 15ft this year, if he continues to work I see no reason why he won't be capable of knocking down some outside shots.

But...you do have a personal vendetta against players from the University of Kentucky. Or it could just be a coincidence that you bash all players that just happened to attend a particular university which is a rival of your favorite team.

where did i ever say my favorite team is u of l? it's not and it's no where close to my favorite team. i've bashed on rondo, thats if you call saying i think he is semi overrated (but thats a whole different thread) and who else from kentucky? saying davis has a lot to do to become a star in the nba is not bashing... oh i've bashed calipari but he totally deserves it (and millions agree with that).

i don't know how you think you know me so well to say i have a vendetta against kentucky and bash every player from there because i love louisville (which i don't).

just cause i've disagreed with you before doesn't mean you need to take it personal and try to assume that everything i says stems from the fact that i hate kentucky because i love louisville. which i can tell you is completely false because i dont even 'like' louisville. i think you have maken a little of a mistake and i want to clear it up.

and with all that said. i ll agree that davis could learn to hit some 3's. yes he improved greatly through the whole year and could quite easily continue that in nba (and i hope he does) but i still think he has a long way to go to be a star and it won't be easy playing against the worlds best players every night.

Being a Hornets fan, I'm ecstatic to get Davis in the draft but I'll admit he has tons of flaws at the moment. His first year is going to be a struggle on both ends on the floor, but he's still going to show signs of greatness. People keep assuming that he'll develop an offensive game when it doesn't work that way. He might add that to his game and he might not, there's no way of telling what he will end up being. All we know is that he is capable of being an nba star and at this point it's impossible to speculate how good or bad he will be. And as for 3 pt shooting i don't want him that far from the basket, being as long and athletic as he is, he should become a top offensive rebounder, he should focus on his mid range game and stay in the paint

False, you are a Louisville fan in this argument.

Man, I never take anything from the message board personally. Fussing like this is half the fun on a boring Friday night. Gotta manufacture some entertainment on a night like this where I'm sitting at home waiting for the playoffs instead of out trying to convince some random to let me inside of her for the night.

Back to the Davis thing...I think he is 3 years away. I see his scoring going 15ppg, 19ppg, 25ppg in his first 3 seasons.

I will definitely be PCing him and trying to get a RAP from every UK guy drafted this year so hopefully he turns out so I don't lose a bunch of money.

Also, I want you to know that if I ever come across a Reece Gaines 1/1 I'm going to set fire to it. :)
