Depends on lots of things like what offense is being run, which team would they play for, how long you want them to play like if your starting out a new club today and looking for a Franchise (Stafford and Flacco would make that list over Brady Peyton Manning because of age), looking at pure skills vs performance....but just looking at QB careers and nothing else...
Current players alphabetical order not in ranked order:
Aaron Rodgers
Ben Roethlisberger (can't leave off the SB 2 time winning QB imo as he's won more then 3 of these guys on this list and is the most underrated QB playing today imo Flacco is #2 Eli is #3 on that list)
Drew Brees
Peyton Manning (would not be on my list if I were starting a team today, no clue about injury. If I were forced to choose would put Eli here for going forward over his brother)
Tom Brady
Retired:
Brett Farve
Dan Marino
Joe Montana
John Elway
Steve Young

Peyton will go down as the one of the best ever, but I need to see him play after four neck surgeries to judge how good he is NOW.
Retired: I don't know to much about past football history like I do other sports but I'll give it a go
1) Montana

Honestly because I didn't watch football until the 1970's and never saw him play. If I were just going by what the experts say I would consider guys like Sammy Baugh who's been considered to be as good as Unitas or Sonny Jurgenson or others in history. Never seeing those guys play I have to go by someone Else's opinion on how good he was and everyone has an opinion on it and I could read this:
ESPN.com: Unitas surprised them all (http://espn.go.com/sportscentury/features/00016574.html)
or this
Sammy Baugh is the best quarterback in history - Hogs Haven (http://www.hogshaven.com/2008/3/24/135333/858)
And what does someone take from that? Me I just go by what I saw and from these eyes that's my list

Stafford is a top 5 QB.... JS.
One of only a few guys ever to throw over 5,000 yards. He had a busted up finger for a couple games also.

This is not a slam on Stafford but I don't believe one season can make someone a top 5 player. Cam Newton had 4000 yards and over 30 TD's....both he and Stafford need to show me a careers worth of games not just one season to take there bodies of work on the same level as other guys at the same position.

So can anyone. His neck is stronger then it was before. Well that is what the doctors say. It is just a question or not if he has the strength.

Flacco would make my top 5 if I were building a Franchise today. He is only 27 years old, he has never missed a game in his career due to injury, he has had the Ravens in the playoffs every year he's been playing, he is the record holder for most game starts in the first two seasons of his career, he won 2 playoff games in his first two seasons starting and is the only QB in history to win a playoff game in each of his first four seasons, and last year was one drop from his first Superbowl berth (which I predicted the Ravens to be in the Superbowl before the season started and was wrong about...damn you Lee Evans). It's nearly impossible imo to leave him off a top 5 list of QB's playing today you wouldn't have in your top 5 if your going by who they are today and how much career is left imo.
Same argument could be made for Stafford but with much less to work with. He is only 24 years old today and although he has only one complete season in 3 years playing is on a lot of people's top lists it seems which I personally disagree with but eh can't win them all

Roethlisberger is not on enough of these lists. Yes, I'm a Steelers fan. But have you ever watched the man play? His stats aren't and will never be up to snuff. Aside from 3 SB appearances, 2 victories, and the third best winning percentage in league history. Oh, more 4th quarter comebacks than Peyton Manning since 2006 too. To go along with more playoff wins than Peyton, in 6 less years of playing. I'll quote Trent Dilfer here: "No other quarterback, in NFL history, could have succeeded with the offensive line Ben Roethlisberger has had the past 4 years." All of these accolades and the man just turned 30.

- and yes he had more 4th quarter comebacks but so what.... Manning didn't have to have comebacks to win. Also, No one cares about Trent Dilfer. That is like quoting Queen Latifah - stupid. Don't get me wrong Roethlisberger is a good QB, but he will not be a hall of famer.

I believe Kurt Warner is one of the best QB's of all time, 3 SB appearances, SB MVP, and is not in the hall of fame. Plus, it takes more than a good QB to be in the Super Bowl. Had he not had Bettis, Ward, etc, no way they would have made the Super Bowl. Phil Simms is not a HOFer and he had 3 appearances also and that is 2 off the top of my head...
Also, it took Derrick Thomas, one of the best players to ever play the game, this long just to get in. Roethlisberger = not a HOFer. You are a steelers fan.

Your thinking of Jeff Hostetler who in 1990 came in for the injured Simms mid season and who won the Giants a Superbowl. Just looked it up. Giants were in the Superbowl 1986, 1990, 2000. Simms retired in the mid 1990's so only 2 SB's for Simms

Forget the Superbowls for a minute...consider this (my top 5 list):
Aaron Rodgers (2) (4)
Ben Roethlisberger (1) (2)
Drew Brees (4) (3)
Peyton Manning (6) (3)
Tom Brady (3) (3)
First # = 30 or more passing TD's in a season times player has done this
Second # = 100 or better QB Rating for season times player has done this
Eli Manning (0) (0)
Eli is clutch when it matters most, but he is streaky and has gotten hot at the right times like he did in this years playoffs. Lets remember the Champion Giants went 9-7 this past season when they won the Superbowl and managed to lose both games to the 5-11 Redskins. If it was not for the Superbowl wins I wouldn't think Eli belonged in that conversation personally but if I had to pick a top 5 for QB play this season I would kick out Peyton and put in Eli for the simple fact that Eli won the Superbowl and only one QB can say that this season

Not true....Jim Plunkett won 2 SuperBowls and isnt a HOFer nor will he ever be.
Not Saying Big Ben wont be a HOFer...but I think he needs more good years.

Good post, and exactly the sentiment that I believe is behind my reasoning I think Ben is the most underrated QB in the game today. Using my example above Ben has 1 season with over 30 TDs and 2 seasons with over 100 QBR. He is a great QB in every word having his team in 3 Superbowls while playing in the same conference that Brady and Peyton play in yet he gets no love. My guess is its because of his off the field crap. Who here is saying things like if Peyton didn't have Marvin Harrison...yet we see if Ben didn't have Hines Ward.

Agree on Big Ben being underrated...and you are probably right in saying his off the field issues have a lot to do with it....although I do believe Matt Schaub is the most underrated QB right now,Id say Ben is a close 2nd.
Truth is....almost everybody had somebody to help them...some to a greater extent than others.
Football is the ultimate team sport.
Although one player can make a HUGE impact, they can't win on their own.
Peyton and Ben are both so talented that it wouldn't matter if Harrison or Ward ever played with them.
They would still probably have had virtually the same amount of success by virtue of raising the level of play of other teammates.
So I take nothing away from Ben for benefiting for Ward and a great D.
