Carlos Ruiz should have started at catcher ahead of Buster Posey. I guess that San Francisco fans stuffed the ballots, although Posey belongs, I don't see why Sandoval is even an all-star at 3B with Martin Prado, Chase Headley and David Freese all having better seasons.

I am a Met fan and pissed too but I understand. Wright has been an average player at best for the last 3 seasons, if he keeps this up for another year, the fans will get behind him again. He was an All-Star starter in 09 when Zimmerman deserved it, so it is a wash in my eyes.

Braun deserved to start again too, but the rubes who still think he cheated likely caused him to just miss out on the top 3 OF spots.

Greinke deserved a spot too, but he'll probably still make it as a replacement.

Why is Napoli the catcher? Mauer's stats are much, much better. Napoli has 8 more HRs, Mauer has 87 points better on BA, 6 more RBI, and 83 points better on OPS.

The all star game is not about who the best players are, its a showcase of the fan favorites. Who pays the salaries and keeps baseball afloat? The fans do. By this rational it should be the fans who choose who they want to see in the all star game. I totally agree that some of the mentioned guys are currently playing better ball than some of those who were selcted, back to the OP, yes, Wright is definately one of the best players this year. Under current all star criteria though, it is the fans who select the players and not skill. As a fan myself, I would rather see certain players myself if I was paying to go see the game vs guys I know are probably better players.

Mauer hasn't heard that one in three years either lol. I thought Saltalamacchia should have made it over Wieters, but oh well... hopefully it motivates him for the rest of the year. ASG is nothing more than a popularity contest anyways, as it should be.

Like it or not, fans would rather tune in to see their favorites than to see the guys who statistically have had the better first half. And without fans (even the casual ones) this game is not what we have come to know it as today.

Forgive me for trusting baseball fans to know that a good defensive 3B batting .350 and leading his team is better than a shaky defensive 3B batting just above .300 who is devoid of leadership talent is an all-star.

Never again. We'll get Josh Thole in the All Star game next year. Payback is a #@#@#@#@#@#@. :D

I think that David Wright should start, dont get me wrong. Having said that starters are chosen by votes. If we dont like this system of All Star selection we should talk about that, not whether the best all around playing player for a position should start. That, IMO, is a no brainer...

Trust me I know his stats do not add up to Wright's this year, but this happens every year to someone deserving of that all star spot. People get so bent out of shape about it. If fans really wanted Wright bad enough they should have voted for him. ;)

The "All-Star Game" is a popularity contest. I think it's dumb as hell for them to give "homefield advantage" to the winning team. They should just alternate "homefield advantage" every year.

In my opinion, wright might have been closer to the best choice than you think. Power is not as important because all-star pitchers don't give up many home runs. Fielding is huge because hits are scarce, and one can make a difference. Wright is clearly superior to Sandoval in running, throwing, and fielding. He was a good candidate for all-star. I am also 100% bias as a huge angry mets fan.

Frankly I wish they'd do away with the whole 25 votes per person crap. This just helped to magnify the giants get out the vote ballot stuffing operation. One person one vote works for everything else so why muck with it? I mean Freddy Sanchez getting millions of votes and he hasn't set foot on the playing field this year? Just lame.

i would argue the difference between 2009 and 2012 is that in 2009 the numbers were much more similar than in 2012. should have panda gone in 2009, perhaps yes, but the numbers given here show it was "close." in addition, the 2009 mets were horrid and were playing their first season in citi field. HR and RBI #'s are quite team dependent, making those numbers even closer.

in 2012, wright's numbers clearly outmatch panda's. no? in addition, and perhaps the biggest thing for me, panda only played in 44 games. to me that is the worst part about all of this. that i do not like.

lastly, i hate the system most. let me clarify that a little. since the game actually means something, the system should change. if they want to go back to random home field, then keep the all-star game the joke it really is. (for clarification, i mostly hate all the all-star/pro bowl deals)

well, there were none in 2009, maybe because Wright was there instead of the Panda.

since 2000, there have been 27 home runs hit in the all star game (12 games), so an average of 2.25 HR per game.

So far this season, there have been 2,372 HR or an average of 79.06 per team. Teams have played at least 77 games meaning the average (if we use 77 games per team although some have played more) is 1.027HR per game. Two teams in a game means the average number of HR per game this season is 2.054.

I mean, really, we all know that it is a popularity contest, there is no point in complaining that 'player A' has better stats than 'player B' because nothing says the fans have to take stats into consideration.
