I've heard of other shops doing this, so I figured I'd give it a shot at mine. I wanted to get an idea of what other collectors thought of it.
It's called The Drop Zone. Basically, each featured item (card, auto ball, etc) has a set price that I drop by $5 every Tuesday until it sells. The first card I'm using is a 2009 SPX Pujols Patch /99.
I'm always looking to try new, fun things at the shop. Thoughts?

Depending on what the patch on that card looks like... it could already be a $5 card.... so you go from $5 to free?

Sounds like a pretty cool idea - make sure the items are well visibly so people know what is going on. You might get some people that buy something just out of fear someone will get to it first :)

I'm only using cards with a normal sell value of $25 or higher. If it drops down to free, then it goes into the prize pool for my next Pack Wars.
The patch is from the "Cardinals" on the front of the jersey, so it's not a boring number patch or anything. I had $25 on it at the shop.

Yeah, I placed it in a showcase that is highly visible. I also printed out a page describing what it was all about.

Eventually, he'll have to pay people to take the card
I kid, I kid. Great idea -- I might give it a go on COMC!

I can't take credit for the idea, as I've heard of other shops doing it. But I figured it was worth a shot.

They been doing it here for years, maybe your shop got the idea from here directly or indirectly :)
It is a hit or miss thing that usually ends up to the wayside and the n someone else will do it a few weeks later,so on and so forth.
What people want in a store is ASSURANCES.
We all know that math tends to be the hardest thing to beat in packs. If you dont have the cash you cant meet to beat the odds, you have to gamble.
I told a friend to put up a 51 Mays he had. Was a solid 700-800.00 card.
He got it in a large pick up pile, already has profited and in the black, told him to put it up on a 30 day raffle
Each sale over 100.00 the customer was to write his name on the back of his receipt as well as contact # and toss it in the giant ass pickle jar. End of the month, make a big show of the date and time, pop a name in front of everyone and make a big deal out of it.
You give people an incentive to spend 100.00 as well as the number of sales you generate on the day of the drawing.
The deal is you need a BIG card to encourage
Who wants to spend 100.00 on packs for a CHANCE at a 200.00 card in a raffle ?
Change that to 800 or 1000.00 and people will be willing to spend 400-500
good luck with your endevors

I tihnk you have to start with cards that sell for more than 25 20,15,10 goes too fast and those are high % drops
Start with at least a 50 dollar SV cards
of you are going to do a 25 card,, drop the price by 2 or 2.5 not $5

a shop where I used to live did something like this...except there were a variety of cards and they drop different increments and randomly so people had to frequent the shop to check the boards and then the "winner" got their name next to the final price so everyone could see those lucky buys

I already do a monthly raffle when customers buy a box. Every box bought gets you a chance in the raffle, and the prize is a pack of every product that came out that month, no matter if it's base Topps or Timeless Treasures.

That was actually something I was thinking of doing after seeing how this would work out.

A shop I used to go to in Fort Lauderdale during spring training, Buds Sports Cards (now closed) always had a showcase dedicated to this idea. They had a good mix of wax in their. They dropped the prices weekly, but not by any set amount. I like the idea of having single cards in there as well.

Man I guess I will have to go to Topeka, that is a really great idea about the raffle, I would be be buying boxes there all the time.

Shinders in MN used to have a couple cases of cards in the drop zone. They did $5 a week on them. Was pretty cool, never knowing how many people were watching what cards. Used it for high end cards, most would start at $50 or more. They didn't put low end crap in the drop zones. It keeps people coming in each week to see whats new in drop zone. Was a smart idea for the shop. More should do it. After big ticket cards sits for weeks in regular display cases, then put in drop zone till it sells.
