View Full Version : Poll: 92 Dream Team v. 12 Team

Now that the Olympics are over and the 12 Team did its job and won gold I thought I would post a nice poll to see where people stand.
Now of course we all know this is all speculation (you can't compare eras, rules are different, athletes are different blah blah blah) that doesn't mean we can't have some fun.
So in a seven game series who would you take?
Feel free to explain your pick but lets try to keep it on topic and not too much banter :)
My opinion:
I think it would be a lot closer then many originally thought or believed. That said I think the 92 Dream Team would still prevail in 6 or 7. Both teams would def. create matchup problems (size v. quickness etc etc). But overall though I think the 92 Dream Team would be more consistent. Thats why I picked 92 Dream Team in 7.

I think the 92 team in about 5 games. But if the 12 team had centers (ie: dwight howard on the team healthy), it would be 92 team in 6 or something (much closer). But with no dominating center or big man, the 92 team will dominate. Thats my 2 cents.

This thread was made for 2 reasons.
1. To start a fight
2. To start more fights.
As if this isnt beating a dead horse after having 3 threads about it in the past month. The last 2 threads are clear indicators on where everyone sits on who would win. Whats the purpose of holding another one?

I said it would be a toss up, because they both had their advantages/disadvantages. But if I absolutely had to pick 1, honestly, I would 12 Team. (I just wasn't alive to even see the 92 Dream Team play, so that is also a factor)

The only person fighting is you. So please leave.
And please stop acting like you know me. I started this thread cause I wanted to see what people thought after Olympics was over because so many people said 'well they haven't even won gold yet'.
So this thread is different. Its just your arrogance isn't and thats why you are trying to start a fight. So leave the thread alone you aren't wanted in here if you can't participate correctly.

2012 team by three touchdowns and one grandslam. It would be competitive, but the 1992 couldn't cut it with today's style.
I'm a huge Robinson fan, but today's game lacks a position for the centers of yesteryear.
Just about everything gets better with time. James Dean was a stud in the 1950s. Have you ever watched him act? He is terrible.

ive had this argument with some buddies and my vote was for the 2012 team...but it had the catch of them having Dwight, Drose and Wade on the team instead of harden/iggy/dwilliams i guess....and that doesnt mean u can cherry pick guys from 92...i just think that these 3 would originally have been on team and pulled out with injury...so if those 3 are on team then i think 12 would win...too quick...92 had size...but to a point it would become a disadvantage cuz the 12tm would be blowing by robinson, ewing, barkley....just my thoughts...and who exactly is bird/magic stopping at that point in there careers...

His body type was not sought for a center in the 1990s. Put Ewing/Hakeem/the other big centers in the 2010s and he wouldn't know what to do.
The player paradigm has shifted.

Have to agree. People are overrating what Dwight could do against a guy like David Robinson. Howard has his way defensively right now because there are no true centers in the game other then perhaps Bynum.
Howard wouldn't be able to step out and guard Robinson or Ewing - those guys would pop shots all day on Howard.
Not to mention Robinson was the physical freak Howard is before Howard - and he had offensive skills that Howard can't even dream about.

Different eras, different game.
The 1992 team had a size advantage, while the 2012 team is faster. Both have slashers and scorers, both play tough D.
As for who would win, I've really got no idea. But, I'd love to see a series.

True centers for the last 100 years. My reference point isn't the last 10 years.
Howard couldn't guard Ewing or Robinson. He just couldn't. He's proven it his entire career that he can't step out and guard anyone.

lebron is no jordan. never will be. period.
but just for the sake of proving this point. Let's go ahead and break down the reasons that you will throw out there.
1) by this time. Jordan had already won multiple championships, not just one. AND he didn't have to leave chicago to team up with bird or other stars. He stayed and won with the team built around him. He had two 3 peats. And if he hadn't taken a break from basketball, the chances are he would have had two more rings also.
2) Compare their stats. BY AGE 27. LEBRON HAS DONE MORE. but think of this. Lebron has been in the NBA for 9 seasons by age 27. Jordan had been in 6, and one of which he missed 60 games due to injury. So basically 5 seasons, so in 4 extra seasons, yes lebron has better totals by age 27. But when comparing first 9 seasons. Not at all. Here's a slideshow breaking down season by season.
LeBron James vs. Michael Jordan: Comparing Their First 9 Seasons in the NBA | Bleacher Report (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1235634-lebron-james-vs-michael-jordan-comparing-their-first-9-seasons-in-the-nba/page/3)
BUT to summarize the stats here you go
Regular Season
Lebron - 27.6/7.2/6.9/1.7/0.8 48.3%FG
Jordan - 32.4/6.3/5.9/2.7/1.0 51.6%
Playoffs
Lebron - 28.5/8.7/6.7/1.7/0.9 46.9%
Jordan - 34.7/6.7/6.6/2.3/1.0 50.1%
Finals
Lebron - 22.5/8.1/7.0/1.5/0.5 43.8%
Jordan - 36.3/6.6/7.9/2.0/0.8 52.6%
Plain and simple, the stats don't lie. Better numbers, percentage from the field, more rings, more records. Elevated his game the further he went into the playoffs, instead of choking. So go ahead and let the lebron lovers try to dispute this, but plain and simple, lebron is not better than Jordan. Period.

True centers for the last 100 years. My reference point isn't the last 10 years.
Howard couldn't guard Ewing or Robinson. He just couldn't. He's proven it his entire career that he can't step out and guard anyone.
Dwight Howard would spin around and under Ewing with a power dunk on every offensive possession.
Centers of the current game are not the same as centers from 40 years ago. 'True' means nothing. You simply use the word to frame your reference point.
I grew up during the height of the media frenzy over Jordan/Barkley/Malone. I saw what they did, but to think today's players are not better is beyond me.
I don't think the human species has peaked. We will continue to best previous bests.
Nate - make sure to sign up for logic class. that was really a sad attempt. Association does not mean causation.

this argument is so tired its not even funny...but here goes nothing...
i think that great centers like ewing, robinson, and hakeem are just extremely rare. just so happens you had 3 in one short span of time. and if you count shaq, 4. shaq still dominated in the 2000's also... if they played in todays game i think they would dominate just the same. someone still has to try and guard them on the low block...they just don't come around that often which is why there aren't any in the league. guys were just grittier for some reason in the 90's, maybe because you had to be or maybe because thats just how they were...
which is why if this was a matchup i think the 92 team would win more times than not. the ONLY person on this team that could guard one of them would be tyson (sometimes). and they wouldn't have to worry about getting beat by tyson on the offensive end. the bigs could just hang out down low and wait for one of the more athletic 12 members to try and get at the rim before being put on the ground...and if tyson wasn't in the game then they would feast down low and score in the post at will.
i think the 12 team would win some if they played a bunch of games, because they do have the ability to get ridiculously hot from beyond the arc. that would lead to some victories but overall i think 9 times out of 10 a 7 game series would be won handily by the 92 team.

I wish a weigh-in and height measurement occurred before every game (in football too). We all know that the media guides are a farce. I want to see Lebron step on a scale. At my peak physique I was 6'3" 275, but had nowhere near the quickness of a Lebron. I want to see how much he really weighs. I think it is higher than reported.

In order to compare playing ability one doesn't need to see the entire program. We are discussing who is the better, more dominate, player in a game. Even giving Jordan the benefit of a larger portfolio to draw from he doesn't come out on top as a player versus player basis.
Comparing a career or legacy will require waiting.

Question for the OP -
Are we playing with the 1992 rules regarding hand-checking the use of the forearm to defend players facing the basket, or the "don't look at him wrong or we'll call a foul" 2012 rules.
The difference in rules from then to now makes it tough to compare individuals, too, as they were playing with different freedoms and/or restrictions.

There is no way of telling that if they played by 92 rules with hand checking. Its quite possible players today could easily adjusted their games for it. Hand checking is more of a strategy playing and less based on agility/endurance and athletisism. Not to say those always win games.
I just think that either team could have easily adjusted for the game change. We're talking about the elite of both eras. Guys that are known to adjust and make the best of their situations.
Still a toss up for me either way.

lol. but you were discuss lebron v. jordan. not the 2012 team as you clearly pointed out that we all strayed from.

Who said Lebron and Kobe was better than Jordan?
phil jackson said kobe was more skilled. i said lebron was more skilled then jordan.
thus lebron and kobe are more skilled then jordan.

Larry Bird said it best when asked if the 2012 team could beat the 92 team - it was the definitive quote on this argument...
"They probably could. I haven't played in 20 years and we're all old now"
I remember reading that quote lol.
I would go with 92 Dream Team.

In order to compare a team you have to compare the players to some extent. Right??

Too busy focusing on Lebron?
I preferred to watch Argentina, Brazil and France. Who's lebron?

I think what he's saying is not that you can say MJ is better because he has more championships, but quite the contrary. He's saying that because Lebron has finally gotten 1 people already want to annoint him best basketball player ever...
Exactly, instead of waiting for Lebron to finish his career and then compare, the Heat homers are proclaiming him the best after one great season.

Didn't Phil state that Kobe could hit tougher shots, but Jordan had the ability to just get any shot he wanted, making his shots easier? That is how he explained their differences.

So then why can't I compare Kobe with Jordan?
Or bring up Kobe?
typical Heat "fan" only wanting to talk about Lebron.

you are the only two people who sit and try to throw out categories between them and say lebron is better when a few pages ago i just sat and GAVE YOU THE LINK AND SHOWED STATS that show jordan was a better defender, steals and blocks. so no, it's not a toss up. scoring, there's no probably to it. Jordan is the career PPG leader in the nba. plain and simple. Passing and rebounds, are seperated by a couple tenths. not much at all. but season to season it varies. but through first nine seasons, lebron has had slightly better numbers in those two categories. but not scoring/shooting/steals/blocks. i swore to myself i wasn't going to get into a troll war, but seriously. learn to read, and absorb the stats so you fully understand the idiotic statements coming out of your mouth. jordan is the greatest, ever, period.

You should take your own advice and actually learn to read.
I didn't say Lebron was the greatest ever.
Did you read that?
And please don't use assists stats of a couple tenths apart as to who is the better passer or if its a wash. That is only one example that clearly shows that you don't know what you are talking about by using 'stats' as the end all be all.
Once again, I DID NOT say Lebron was the greatest ever.
oh and the bolded part caused me to spit my drink out from laughing. re-read it and i'm sure you will too.

Hahaha....let's do a different poll:

ive had this argument with some buddies and my vote was for the 2012 team...but it had the catch of them having Dwight, Drose and Wade on the team instead of harden/iggy/dwilliams i guess....and that doesnt mean u can cherry pick guys from 92...i just think that these 3 would originally have been on team and pulled out with injury...so if those 3 are on team then i think 12 would win...too quick...92 had size...but to a point it would become a disadvantage cuz the 12tm would be blowing by robinson, ewing, barkley....just my thoughts...and who exactly is bird/magic stopping at that point in there careers...
Barkley, Ewing and co. would be knocking those fast little guards on their ass when they come into the lane.
THen after the guards are scared, would be settling for 3's and jumpers.
And it is pointless to say IF they had those guys on the 12 team, they are not, were not, never will be apart of the 12 team.
92 team would win in 6, but they would be good games

Barkley, Ewing and company would foul out if they knocked anyone that drove the lane. The who would be out there?
