I guess at least they are trying to do something about it but this isn't going to change much nor will it change anything when it actually matters...

Yeah fines won't mean anything to pretty much all of the players, they need to start affecting the games with fouls, techs, or whatever if it is a flop

Idk..with the amount that some of these guys flop- they'll be suspended in no time. Or they'll stop after 5 which will be like a week...
Good because sometimes it makes the game hard to watch.

Take for example the chandler back pick on lebron last year.

Yes it was clearly a foul but lebron also did a very good job at selling it. So by the definition he did 'intend' the refs to call a foul on another player. If Lebron hadn't sold it to the extreme maybe the refs wouldn't have called it? or maybe they wouldn't have called flagrant or whatever. Who knows?

Its a good idea but its going to be flawed.

I would rather have it flawed in that regard than flawed the way it is now personally. Let the ref make the call and leave the acting to Hollywood.

I agree.

The major problem will be when the reviewers make as sketchy of calls as the refs have been. Thats why it will always be flawed.

at the end of the day there is always going to be interpretation in officiating. Hopefully you trained the refs well enough and hired the right people so that the interpretation is consistent.

Flopping has become such a chronic problem though that it had to be dealt with, regardless of how difficult to enforce. There were a lot of casual fans who were bailing and the NBA wants the most $$$ possible

Should be a 'play on' if the officials deem the offense a flop. If the 'flop' is used to sell a true charge then I don't see a problem.

The refs are given the power to call the game, so give them that power.

When I played basketball as a youngster I was often the largest player on the court. I often played center and stood my ground on a drive from a smaller guard. If I held my ground and the guard ran into me nothing was ever called. My coaches told me that I had to give when I was charged upon. If I didn't a charge would never be called, even though it is deserved.

Players don't mind paying fines when they're rolling in millions of dollars every day.

Apply a tech foul or personal foul for a true flop.


Seems like a sad attempt at regulation with more intent to line the pockets of the NBA while 'showing they're making progress to stop flopping". They're figuring, why not continue to get rich whenever possible!

If they really wanted it to just STOP, they'd apply an offensive foul if it was over the top flopping.

Otherwise, it should just be a play-on.

Players would be more embarrassed at a play-on for a flop, than a fine. More likely than not it would impact their teams play at that moment negatively, and that would have more of an affect on the players mentalities than a simple fine.

I agree Paul. A play-on embarrasses the player. The crowd cheers and it makes the highlights.

We have to do everything possible to distance ourselves from "Euro-Style" basketball.

Let's not forget the Olympics and how disgraceful teams like Spain are by flopping every single chance they get.

This is at least a step in the right direction. I am glad they are going to do something about flopping even if it is just fines for now. Maybe they will change the policy later if fining players doesn't work. I will be interested to see how this policy works this upcoming season.

Like some players have said I prefer the FIBA rules but I also think this is better than nothing and a step forward. If they are aggressive with it then some players will face possible suspensions and that will have an impact.
