Panini America’s Halloween Treat to You: A Sneak Peek at the New 2012 Prizm Football

October 31, 2012 at 3:45 PM

For those of you who haven’t yet seen our preview of the brilliant first uncut sheets from Panini America’s upcoming 2012-13 Prizm Basketball, do yourself a favor and have a look now. Just be sure to come right back here when you’re done for a humongous Halloween treat way sweeter than any candy you’ll eat tonight.

Prizm technology is coming to football, too.

Following in the footsteps of its trailblazing basketball counterpart (which arrives in just a few weeks), 2012 Prizm Football will launch in February with a 300-card base set bolstered by 100 rookies seeded one per pack. In addition, there are autographed versions of all 100 rookies (numbered to 499 or less) and 100 of the veterans (numbered to 149 or less).

Each hobby box of 2012 Prizm Football (six cards per pack/20 packs per box/12 boxes per case) will deliver two autographs, three Prizms, one hobby-only Red Prizm, one Rookie Dominance, one Decade Dominance, one Brilliance and two additional inserts.

Each retail box of 2012 Prizm Football (four cards per pack/24 packs per box) should yield one autograph, one Prizm, two retail-exclusive Green Prizms, one Rookie Dominance, one Decade Dominance, one Brilliance and one additional insert.

Other product highlights include . . .

Rookie Prizm Autographs: Boasting a unique design updated with 2012 NFL game photography, this 100-card, rookie-focused autograph parallel is limited to just 99 and includes a Rookie Finite Prizm 1/1 autograph version
Red Prizm Die-Cuts: A hobby-exclusive 300-card parallel set
Gold Prizm parallels numbered to just 25
The 25-card Decade Dominance insert (featuring Prizm, Gold Prizm and Finite Prizm parallel versions) honors the greatest legends in NFL history
We’ll have plenty more to share regarding 2012 Prizm Football in the near future right here on The Knight’s Lance. But for now, in the name of getting you to trick-or-treating a little quicker, here’s your extended first look at the product.

Enjoy.

I don't know, here's what basketball prizm looks like

what are some of your favorite products?

First, I like the design on the basketball PriZMs, just not the supposed odds. I just started collecting again in late August, but here are some boxes I've busted:

Finest 2012 (Yeah, biased. Pulled a top hit. Nice looking cards regardless.)
Rookies and Stars 2011/2012 (Decent odds, albeit boring design.)
Prime 2012 (Design is boring too, but more smooth. Decent odds...though somewhat oversaturated to the point where most parallel autos are worth the same.)

Never busted Chrome, but I'm interested in that and Strata. Surely other products will be added as I continue to learn more about the hobby. And really, I might end up buying a box of...PriZm if the price point is right and the box breaks aren't as horrible as I assume they'll be.

I bet this is a $100 per box with more autos per box than Finest (which these cards look like to a degree).

I'll wait to see how this stuff physically looks before I get some. If it's close to basketball Prizm, it should be really nice.

Says two autos per hobby box, but anything can change I suppose.

Oh damn, I missed that. It might be even cheaper then.

I highly doubt that this will be as bad as Platinum, that was a botched abortion along with Bowman Signature.

If it wasnt for 100 rookies, there would be no Victor Cruzers. Watch someone will come out of here, my guess would be Austin Davis, I hope he has some sigs, darryl Richardson maybe? Oh yeah.

See, that's the thing, there has to be auto's of scrub rookies, otherwise every box would have only like 1 of 10 player autos in it!

I don't like pulling no name players, but at the same time, it sparks interest from you in that player, and you start following a player you otherwise wouldn't even think about. it's fun!

Packers nation desperately needs some Casey Harward autos. His only pro uni auto looks like a kicker or some crap from Momentum, I think.

With that said, this looks like a decent attempt of a Chrome knockoff, but I HATE the name.
If this flops, I officially copyright the phrase "Panini Jism". lol

i went to my LSC today and its disappointing to see the STACKS of packs for sale as their is so much product and its so overproduced. Does anyone else think that they just try to hard to find they next great thing? and 99% of the time its a flop(and we pay for it in the end)?

Purple refractor /499
Black refractor /399
Fuchsia refractor /349
Blue refractor /299

Sounds about right. Stolen idea from Topps. Triple the auto checklist. Change on card autos to stickers. And, sprinkle in a "Z" in the name to make it sexy. POOF! It's Panini special: Panini's high gloss, shiny, polished turd!

You must not be a basketball collector. Panini absolutely needed to make a Chrome type of product to save face with basketball collectors and are now going to try with football. Hoops, Prestige, and Threads have all been average. Prizm basketball is going to blow up big time. Lock your cases in now. And when it performs well, I suspect some of that success will translate to Prizm football sales. Topps is done with football by February so Panini will have a monopoly on NFL collectors who would rip just about anything new.

Nope. No basketball for this guy (except Butler Bulldogs; Hayward, Mack, Howard). This product may go over great for the NBA crowd, but it won't fly for the NFL crowd. The NFL has the real chrome, and knock off chrome with sticker autos will be a bust when you can grab an on card auto from the gold standard chrome product of the same guy.

I really can't get over that "Z."

Whoever names their sets and inserts needs to be replaced. Most people retire by age 80 anyway.

I mean at name value, those sound pretty lame

Good time for me to get back in the hobby. I've redirected my gambling "problem" to breaking a decent amount of bad boxes.

Well, here's to recouping SOMETHING on the boxes I'm waiting for. Two 2012 R&S, a Platinum, a Prime, an Allen & Ginter, and a 2012 Leaf Metal Draft baseball.

Eh. I'm already screwed on those. Hope I can still convince myself on a case of Strata at 850.

I'm a relative newbie when it comes to this. Before my sign up date on the forums here, I hadn't collected for about 15 years.

Haven't heard of the first two you named. Strata is fine with me, considering it's a real word. I'm mainly just joking about PriZm. A name alone won't stop me from buying.

I remember receiving a box of Sportflix as a gift, back in the day. That was bad all around, but I did request it, haha.

I got started in 2000 collecting cards.
Anyone remember busting Fleer Mystique or Focus?
Collectors Edge Odyssey?
UD Ionix?
Pacific Prism Prospects, Omega or Paramount ?
Skybox Impact or Dominion?

Just off the top of my skull, there have been plenty of stupidly named products. Some of the cards were nice, like Ionix. So a dumb name wouldnt scare me off.

Cage just ruined that name with the National Treasure movies. ;)

I'll give them a chance if the breaks aren't too evil. The basketball variant seems to be rather pretty. But hell, I'd give Fleer Retro football a chance if it wasn't already overpriced.

Not to get too off topic either, but honestly I've never seen the National Treasure movies. Con Air is just fun, as is Face Off I'd say. He does have some favorites of mine though. Matchstick Men comes to mind, as well as his performance in Kick-Ass. Guessing I'll like Adaptation once I actually watch it.

Back to cards. Wouldn't Adaptation be an interesting set name? The cards could have a survivalist, mutation kind of theme. ;)

How about we just combine the two?

Let's start naming card brands after nic cage movies!

Con Air could be a basketball set featuring our favorite basketball players who have been arrested, like Dennis Rodman, Allen Iverson, Jayson Williams, etc..

The Rock a championship set featuring players who have won championship rings

Face Off featuring some of the best rivalries in sports

Gone in 60 Seconds this set focuses on some of the biggest busts in NFL history, includes Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell

Well, you get the idea haha

Yeah. The last normal product is Topps Magic in early January. That will be followed by Valor and Five Star which are very high end and out of most collectors' price range. Prizm will be on it's own island of time so I do believe it will perform well based solely on the fact that there is literally nothing else new to rip at that point under $180.

Retail wax has been great though for Topps products at least. Bowman Signatures, Topps Football, and Platinum were all big money makers for the early retail rippers. I've seen some of that in baseball too. It seems for the first time ever that retail is becoming a better rip over many hobby products.

Phew, I thought this was referencing loss of NFL License for Topps in 2013. That would be a bummer. I'm not hellbent on hating Panini, I just would hate to see competition among designs/companies end in NFL the way it has in MLB, NHL and NBA. I just don't think that's good for the hobby at all.
